主なるわたしは、地に住む者に下る災いを知っているので、わたしは僕ジョセフ・スミス・ジュニアを訪れ、彼に天から語り、戒めを与えた。教義と聖約１：１７
Wherefore, I the Lord, knowing the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth, called upon my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and spake unto him from heaven, and gave him commandments. Doctrine & Covenants 1:17
In the very first section of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord declares that Joseph Smith is the prophet chosen by the Lord in these last days.
教義と聖約の最初の章で主はジョセフ・スミスがこの末日に主によって召された預言者であると宣言されました。
Everything that we have in the gospel, all the ordinances, the priesthood, all the blessings, everything, come to us through the Prophet Joseph Smith.
私たちに与えられているすべて、つまり福音やすべての儀式、神権、すべての祝福などは預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して享受できています。
We are taught in the Doctrine & Covenants that only our Savior Jesus Christ has done more for the salvation of the world than the Prophet Joseph Smith (Doctrine & Covenants 135:3).
私たちは救い主イエス・キリストを除いて預言者ジョセフ・スミス以上に世の救いのために貢献した者はいないと教義と聖約の中で教えられています。（教義と聖約第135章3節）
During his short lifetime, he accomplished so many things necessary for our eternal salvation. In just 90 days, he translated the Book of Mormon and sent it forth to the world. He restored the keys of the priesthood, making it possible for us to be baptized and to receive the Holy Ghost. He opened the door for the salvation of the dead by restoring the sealing power of the priesthood.
彼は短い生涯で私たちの永遠の救いに必要な多くのことを成し遂げました。僅か90日間で彼はモルモン書を翻訳し世界に広めました。神権の鍵を回復し、バプテスマや聖霊を受けることを可能にしました。彼は神権の結び固めの力を回復することで死者の救いの扉を開いたのです。
Most importantly of all, on that spring day in the year 1820, as he prayed in the Sacred Grove, he saw and talked with Heavenly Father and with Jesus Christ. At the moment, nearly 2,000 years of darkness came to an end. The heavens were opened and God again spoke to man on the earth. Finally, after centuries, a prophet of God was on the earth.
その中で最も重要なのは彼が1820年のある春の日に聖なる森で祈っていた時、天父とイエス・キリストにまみえ、お話をしたことです。まさにその時2000年近い暗黒の時代に終わりを告げたのです。天は開け神が再び地上の人々に言葉を伝えたのです。何世紀経ったその時、神の預言者を再びこの地上に用意されたのです。
And, from that moment until the end of his life, Joseph Smith was persecuted. That persecution still goes on today. Many evil people attack Joseph Smith. They try to convince people that Joseph Smith was a bad person, that he told lies, that he deceived people.
そしてその時以来、彼の生涯が終わるまでジョセフ・スミスは迫害を受けました。その迫害は今日でも続いています。多くの邪悪な人はジョセフ・スミスを攻撃しました。彼らはジョセフ・スミスは悪人だと人々を納得させようとしました。彼らは嘘をつき騙したのです。
But they are wrong.

Joseph Smith was a prophet of God.
ジョセフ・スミスは神の預言者でした。
As God’s prophet, the work that he started has grown to include the whole world. From that first Church meeting with only 6 members, the Church has grown to more than 15,000,000 members. Wards and Stakes now cover the earth. Temples are available in countries all around the world. Missionaries are taking the message of the restored gospel to every “nation, kindred, tongue, and people”.
神の預言者として彼が始めた業は世界中で発展しました。６人で始まった初期の教会から15,000,000 人以上の教会へと成長しました。ワードとステークは地球上を埋め尽くしています。神殿は世界のあらゆる国々に存在します。宣教師は回復された福音のメッセージを「あらゆる国民、部族、国語の民、民族」に伝えています。
We need to honor and respect Joseph Smith as a prophet of God. We need to remember that it is only because of his work and sacrifices that we can enjoy the blessings of the gospel today. We need to remember that our eternal salvation, as well as that of our families, living and dead, is made possible by Joseph Smith.
私たちはジョセフ・スミスを神の預言者として敬い尊敬する必要があります。私たちは今日福音の祝福にあずかれるのはひとえに彼の働きと犠牲に他ならないことを忘れてはいけません。現在生きている、亡くなっているにかかわらず私たちの家族を含め永遠の救いはジョセフ・スミスによって可能となったことを忘れてはいけません。
I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. I know that he saw and talked with Heavenly Father and with Jesus Christ. I know that he restored the priesthood keys. I know that he made it possible for us to be sealed as eternal families. I know that he translated the Book of Mormon by the power of God.
私はジョセフ・スミスが神の預言者であることを知っています。彼は天父とイエス・キリストに出会い言葉を交わしたことを知っています。私は彼が神権の鍵を回復したことを知っています。永遠の家族の結び固めを可能にしてくれたことを私は知っています。彼が神の力によってモルモン書を翻訳したことを知っています。
This great latter day work had its beginnings with Joseph Smith and that work continues on today. We have prophets on the earth today who continue the work the Joseph Smith started. The heavens are open again and God does talk to us through his chosen prophets.
この末日の偉大な業はジョセフ・スミスから始まり今日も続いているのです。私たちには今日も地上に預言者がいてジョセフ・スミスが開始した業を引き継いでいます。天は再び開かれ神は選ばれし預言者を通して私たちに語りかけてくださいます。
As the words of the hymn say: “Great is his glory and endless his priesthood. Ever and ever the keys he will hold”.
讃美歌16番の言葉にあるように「神権とみ栄えをもて、鍵を永遠にわれ持つ」のです。
