And we did magnify our office unto the Lord, taking upon us the responsibility, answering the sins of the people on our own heads if we did not teach them the word of God with all diligence; wherefore, by laboring with our might their blood might not come upon our garments; otherwise their blood would come upon our garments, and we would not be found spotless at the last day. Jacob 1:19
After the death of Nephi, his younger brother Jacob became the leader of the Church among the Nephites. In this scripture, Jacob explains the responsibility he and the other priesthood leaders took upon themselves.
ニーファイの死後、弟のヤコブはニーファイ人の教会の指導者になりました。この聖句でヤコブは自分と他の神権指導者たちが引き受けた責任について説明しています。
Jacob says that they worked as hard as they could to teach the people the commandments of the Lord. Jacob tells us that he labored “with all diligence”.
ヤコブは彼らが主の戒めを教えるために全力を尽くして働いたと述べています。ヤコブは「力の限り」働いたと述べています。
Why?
何故でしょう？
As priesthood leaders, Jacob and those who labored with him would be responsible for the sins of the people if they did not “magnify their office unto the Lord”. It was to become clean from the sins of the people that those priesthood leaders labored “with all diligence”.
神権指導者としてヤコブと彼と共に働いた人々が「力の限り神の言葉を民に教えなければ」人々の罪の責任を負うことになります。神権指導者が「全力を尽くして」働くことで民が罪から清められるようになるのです。
What is the message in this scripture for us?
この聖句のメッセージは私たちに何を教えているでしょうか？
We are not the leader of the Church. We are not the Stake President. We are not the Bishop. We are just ordinary people. Do we have any responsibility?
私たちは教会の指導者ではありません。ステーク会長でもありません。ビショップでもありません。私たちは普通の人です。私たちには何か責任がありますか？
Well, we have all been baptized. We have all become followers of Jesus Christ. We have all made covenants to keep his commandments. We all have callings to minister to others.
私たちは皆バプテスマを受けています。皆イエス・キリストの従者となりました。主の戒めを守ると誓約を交わしています。他の人をミニスタリングする召しを受けています。
Just like Jacob, we have the same responsibility to labor “with all diligence” to help others come unto Christ. We have the same responsibility to help our brothers and sisters gain a stronger testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We have the same responsibility to encourage others to receive all the blessings and ordinances of the gospel.
ヤコブと同じように、私たちは人々がキリストの元に来るのを助けるために「全力を尽くして」働くという同じ責任を受けています。私たちには兄弟姉妹がイエス・キリストの福音に、より強い証を得るのを助ける同じ責任があります。私たちは福音のすべての祝福と儀式を受けるよう他の人を励ますという同じ責任があります。
Most of us have friends or family members who are no longer active in the Church. If we do not labor “with all diligence” in helping those people come back into the Church, will we have to “answer the sins of the people on our own heads”?
私たちの友人や家族の中には教会に活発でない人もいるでしょう。もし彼らが教会に戻れるよう助けるために「全力を尽くして」働かなければ、私たちは「民の罪を自分たちの頭に受けなければなりません」か？
President Monson frequently urged us to rescue those lost sheep who have strayed from the flock. Our ministering assignments can give us many opportunities to help those lost sheep return to the safety of the fold.
モンソン大管長は群れから外れた失われた羊を救助するよう私たちに頻繁に勧められました。私たちの奉仕の割り当ては迷い出た羊がこれらの安全な囲いに戻るのを助ける多くの機会を与えてくれます。
If we labor “with all diligence”, will all the lost sheep return? Probably not. But that is not the point.
もし「全力を尽くして」働くならば迷い出たすべての羊は戻ってくるでしょうか？おそらく違うでしょう。しかしそのことは問題ではありません。
Alma labored “with all diligence” in the city of Ammoniah, but they still rejected his words. Mormon labored “with all diligence” among the wicked Nephites of his day, but they still rejected his words. Even our Savior Jesus Christ, who is the greatest example of one who labors “with all diligence”, was not able to get the Jews of his day to repent.
アルマは「全力を尽くして」アモナイハの町で働きましたが、人々はまだ彼の言葉を受け入れませんでした。モルモンは当時の邪悪なニーファイ人の間で「全力を尽くして」働きましたが、それでも彼の言葉は受け入れられませんでした。「全力を尽くして」働いた最も素晴らしい模範である救い主イエスキリストでさえユダヤ人に悔い改めをさせることは出来ませんでした。
The important point that Jacob teaches us is not that we must be successful. Rather, his message is that we must labor “with all diligence” in our own calling and situation. The only thing that is important is we do our best.
ヤコブが教える大切な点は私たちが成功しなければならないということではありません。むしろ彼のメッセージは私たちの召しや状況において「全力を尽くして」働くべきだということです。重要なことは最善を尽くすということです。
We have been promised that we can become clean from the blood and sins of this generation. How do we do that? Through our faithfulness. It is by laboring “with all diligence” that we too can become clean from the sins of others.
私たちはこの世の血と罪から清くなることが出来ると約束されました。どうすればいいでしょうか？私たちの忠実さを通してです。私たちも他の人の罪から清められるということができるのは「最善を尽くして」働くことです。
As we go through this next week, let’s do our best to labor “with all diligence” in whatever assignment or calling we have been given. Let’s do our best to help those who have strayed return to the covenant path. Let’s be worthy of the great blessings promised to the faithful.
来週を私たちが与えられたどんな割り当てや召しでも「全力を尽くして」働くよう最善をつくしましょう。迷い出た人々が誓約の道に戻れるのを助けるために最善を尽くし、忠実な人に約束された大いなる祝福を受けるにふさわしくありましょう。
