わたしの考えはこうである。少ししかまかない者は、少ししか刈り取らず、豊かにまく者は、豊かに刈り取ることになる。各自は惜しむ心からでなく、また、しいられてでもなく、自ら心で決めたとおりにすべきである。神は喜んで施す人を愛して下さるのである。コリント人の第二の手紙９：6-７

But this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.  Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; no grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.  2 Corinthians 9:6-7

この聖句でパウロは、聖典の中で多く教えられている基本的な教義、「与えること」あるいは「仕えること」について教えています。大切なのは与えることではなく、むしろ私たちの態度であることを思い起こさせています。

In these verses, Paul again teaches us the simple doctrine of giving or serving that is taught in many places in the scriptures.  He reminds us that it is not the giving that is important, but rather our attitude that is important.

この原則は「教義と聖約」の最初の数節でもしばしば教えられています。例えば、第4節に含まれる資格に注目してください。刈り入れを望む者と書かれています。そこでのキーワードは「望む」です。

This principle is taught often in the first few sections of the Doctrine and Covenants.  Notice the qualification contained in Section 4, for example.  It says who desires to reap.  The key word there is “desire”.  

この招きは、本当に仕えたいと願うすべての人に宛てたものです。それ以外の資格はありません。招きには制限がありません。何世代にもわたって教会にいる人、指導的地位にある人、伝道に携わったことのある人、神殿に行ったことのある人だけが招かれているとは書かれていません。

The invitation is to all those who really want to serve.  There is no other qualification mentioned.  The invitation is not limited.  It does not say that the invitation is only for those who have been in the Church for many generations, or who have held leadership positions, or who have served a mission, or who have been to the Temple.

唯一の資格は、主に仕えたいという願いだけなのです。私たちは皆、奉仕の機会を得る資格を持っています。

The only qualification is the desire to serve the Lord.  We can all qualify for opportunities to serve.  

奉仕の種類に制限がないことにも注目してください。ビショップや扶助協会会長として奉仕することに限定されません。専任の宣教師として奉仕することに限定されません。教会の中央幹部であることに限定されません。

Notice also that there is no limitation on the type of service that can be performed.  It is not limited to serving as a Bishop or a Relief Society president.  It is not limited to serving as a full-time missionary.  It is not limited to being a General Authority.

この原則は、誰でも何らかの形で奉仕できることを私たちに教えています。どんな奉仕でも、主は受け入れてくださいます。私たちがささやかで単純だと思うことでも、主に仕えていることに変わりはないことを教えています。

This principle teaches us that we can all serve in some way.  It teaches us that any service we perform is accepted by the Lord.  It teaches us that what we may think of as something small and simple is still serving the Lord.

この原則で重要なのは、能力ではなく態度です。主を愛し、主に仕えたいと願って奉仕するなら、約束された祝福をすべて受けることができるのです。純粋な心で仕えるなら、主を愛していることを示すことになります。もし私たちが自分の限られた能力の限りを尽くして奉仕するなら、主は私たちを祝福し、助けてくださるでしょう。

The key in this principle is attitude, not ability.  If we serve in any capacity because we love the Lord and want to serve him, we will receive all the promised blessings.  If we serve with a pure heart, we are showing the Lord that we love him.  If we serve to the best of our own limited ability, the Lord will bless us and help us.

強制されたからとか、罪悪感があるからとか、期待されているからという理由で奉仕するなら、私たちは「少ししかまかない者」なのです。もし私たちが真心から祈るのでなければ、私たちは「少ししか蒔かない者」なのです。集会に出席しても、話を聞かず、参加しないなら、私たちは「少ししかまかない者」なのです。

If we serve because we are forced to, or because we feel guilty, or because it is expected of us, we are “sowing sparingly”.  If we pray, but without real intent, we are “sowing sparingly.  If we attend our meetings, but don’t listen or participate, we are “sowing sparingly”.

聖典の中で、私たちは「熱心に善いことに携わる」べきだと教えられています。また、「わたしがすべてのことを命じるのは適切ではない」とも教えられています。 (58章）。 つまり、私たちは仕えたいと願い、そして「豊かにまく」必要があるのです。

We are taught in the scriptures that we should be “anxiously engaged in a good cause”.  We are also taught that “it is not meet that I should command in all things”.  (Section 58).  In other words, we need to desire to serve and then “sow bountifully”.  

どんな状況にあっても、私たちは何らかの形で主に仕えることができます。ささやかで単純なことかもしれませんが、私たちが最善を尽くすなら、主にとって私たちは「豊かにまく」ことになるのです。

In whatever situation we may be in, we can serve the Lord in some way.  It may be just a small and simple thing, but to the Lord, we are “sowing bountifully” if we do our best.

新しい週が始まります。「豊かにまく」ことを心に留めて過ごしましょう。主に仕えたいという願いが最も重要な条件であることを覚えていましょう。ささやかで単純な奉仕であっても、私たちが主を愛しているのを示していることを忘れないようにしましょう。私たちも「豊かに刈り取る」ことができるように、皆で「豊かに蒔」きましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s remember to “sow bountifully”.  Let’s remember that a desire to serve the Lord is the most important requirement.  Let’s remember that even the small and simple things we do as we serve show that we love the Lord.  Let’s all “sow bountifully” so that we can also “reap bountifully”.
