だれもわたしのために自分の命を捨てるのを恐れてはならない。わたしのために自分の命を捨てる者は、再びそれを見いだすからである。また、わたしのために進んで自分の命を捨てない者は、わたしの弟子ではない。教義と聖約１０３:２７−２８

Let no man be afraid to lay down his life for my sake; for whoso layeth down his life for my sake shall find it again.  And whoso is not willing to lay down his life for my sake is not my disciple. Doctrine & Covenants 103:27-28

Section 103 of the Doctrine and Covenants was given at a time when the saints in Jackson County were suffering great trials.  Some had been driven out of their homes.  Many had their crops and livestock destroyed.  Some members of the Church had even been killed.

教義と聖約の103章は、ジャクソン郡の聖徒たちが大きな試練に苦しんでいたときに与えられました。家から追い出された人や、作物や家畜を破壊された人も多くいました。殺害された教会員さえいました。

Lyman Wight and Parley P. Pratt had come from Jackson County to Kirtland to ask the Prophet Joseph Smith what the saints in Jackson County should do.  Section 103 contains instructions from the Lord in answer to this question.

ジャクソン郡からカートランドを訪れたライマン・ワイトとパーリー・P・プラットは、預言者ジョセフ・スミスにジャクソン郡の聖徒は何をすべきか尋ねました。103章には、この質問に対する主からの回答と指示が含まれています。

One of the reasons the saints had been suffering was because they did not obey the commandments that had been given to them.  The Lord says that if they do not obey the commandments, they will have to suffer.  He also promises them that if they keep the commandments, they will be protected.

聖徒たちが苦しんでいたひとつの理由は、与えられた戒めに従わなかったからです。主は、彼らが戒めに従わなければ、苦しむ必要があると言われています。また、彼らが戒めを守るならば、保護されるとも約束しておられます。

It must have been a very difficult time for those saints in Jackson County.  They did not know if they would be killed by the wicked people.  It is very normal to be afraid to die.  It would be very scary to have evil men threatening to kill you.  

それはジャクソン郡の聖徒たちにとって非常に困難な時期だったに違いありません。彼らは邪悪な者によって殺害されるのではないかと不安でした。死ぬことを恐れるのはごく普通のことです。邪悪なものから殺すと脅迫されればとても怖いことでしょう。

But the Lord tells the saints not to be afraid of dying for the sake of the gospel.  Those who were killed were promised great blessings.

しかし、主は聖徒たちに、福音のために死ぬことを恐れないようにと言われました。命を落とした人には大きな祝福が約束されていました。

Now, in our day, it is very unlikely that anyone will be killed because they are a member of the Church.  We may be ridiculed.  We may be laughed at.  We may be mocked.  But it is very unlikely that we will be killed.

今の時代、教会員であるために殺される可能性はほとんどありません。馬鹿にされたり、嘲笑されることはあるかもしれません。しかし、私たちが殺される可能性はほとんどありません。

And yet, this instruction from the Lord applies to us just as it did to the saints in Jackson County.  

それでも、主からのこの指示は、ジャクソン郡の聖徒たちと同じように私たちにも当てはまります。

Although we will probably not “lay down our life” for the gospel in the sense of being killed, we should be willing to “lay down our life” in a different way.

殺されるという意味において、福音のために「命を捨てる」ことはおそらくないでしょうが、別のかたちで「命を捨てる」ことをいとわないようにすべきです。

In our day, this instruction might mean that we will serve the Lord with all our might and strength.  It might mean that we do all that we can, every day, to fulfill our callings.  It might mean that we do all that we can do to serve those around us, whether or not they are members of the Church.

今の時代なら、この指示は全力を尽くして主に仕えることを意味するかもしれません。召しを果たすために毎日できることをすべて行うことを意味するかもしれません。また、教会員であるかどうかに関わらず、周りの人に奉仕するためにできることをすべて行うことを意味するかもしれません。

We need to make the needs of the Lord’s Church the most important thing in our life.  We need to be willing to accept whatever the Lord asks of us and to do our best to accomplish the task.  

主の教会が必要とすることを、私たちの生活の中で最も大切にする必要があります。主が私たちに求めておられることは何でも喜んで受け入れ、その務めを果たすために最善を尽くす必要があります。

We need to be willing to accept new callings.  We need to be willing to do things that are different than what we have been doing.  We need to be willing to serve even when we are tired or when it is inconvenient. 

私たちは新しい召しを喜んで受け入れる必要があります。今までとは違うことを進んで行う必要があります。 疲れていたり、不都合であっても、喜んで奉仕する必要があります。

We need to be willing to “lay down our life” for the Lord.  If we are not willing to do that, we are not his disciples.  

私たちは主のために喜んで「自分の命を捨てる」必要があります。その気持ちがなければ、主の弟子とは言えません。

As we go through this next week, let’s think about how we can show the Lord that we are willing to “lay down our life” for him.  Let’s be willing to do whatever is ask of us by our Bishop, by our Elders Quorum, or by the Relief Society.  Let’s be willing to dedicate our time to the Lord.  Let’s do our best to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
