もしこれらのことがわかっていて、それを行うなら、あなたがたはさいわいである。ヨハネによる福音書１３：１７
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. John 13:17
This short scripture is part of the instructions the Savior gave to his disciples at the Last Supper. As short and simple as it is, it contains a powerful message for us today.
この短い聖句は救い主が最後の晩餐の場で弟子たちに与えられた教えの一つです。短く簡潔ではありますが今日の私たちにとっても力強いメッセージが含まれています。
One of the first things we learned when we are taught about the gospel is that it is a gospel of action.
私たちが福音について最初に学ぶことの一つは、行いの福音であるということです。
In other words, it is not enough just to know about the commandments. Knowledge by itself does not save us.
言い換えると戒めを知るだけでは十分ではなく、知識だけでは救われないということです。
We need to take action ourselves. We need to keep the commandments. We need to not only “know” the commandments, we need to “do” them.
私たちは自ら行動する必要があります。戒めを守る必要があります。戒めを「知る」だけでなく、それを「行う」必要があるのです。
Remember the Zoramites that Alma taught. They all went to church on one day of the week. They met together to worship. Then, as Alma explains, they all went home, never thinking about the things of God until they came back to church the next week.
アルマが教えたゾーラム人を覚えていますか？彼らは全員週に一度教会に行きました。彼らは礼拝するために集まりました。更にアルマが述べているように彼らは家に帰った後、翌週再び教会に来るまで神様のことなど考えることがなかったのです。
This is very similar to many churches today. The people attend their church, listen to a message from their priest or minister, then go back home to their regular lives.
これは今日の多くの教会ととても類似しています。彼らは教会に集い、司祭や牧師からお話を聞き、帰宅後普段の生活に戻ります。
They are not expected to do anything. They do not have any callings. They do not have any assignments. They do not take any action other than just listening to the sermon.
彼らは特に何かをするよう期待されてはいません。召しも受けていませんし、責任も持っていません。説教を聞くこと以外には何も行動することはありません。
In the Church, things are very different for us. We have been taught about the commandments of the Lord. We “know these things”.
私たちの教会は状況がかなり違います。私たちは主の戒めについて学んでいます。私たちは「それらを知っています」。
We have all accepted the responsibility to serve the Lord and to keep his commandments. We made that covenant when we were baptized and we renew that covenant each week as we partake of the sacrament.
私たちは皆主に仕え、主の戒めを守る責任を引き受けています。私たちはバプテスマを受けたときその誓約を交わし、毎週聖餐を取るときその誓約を更新します。
Since we “know these things”, we must now “do” these things.
私たちは「それらのことを知っている」ので、それらのことを今「行う」必要があります。
We all have responsibilities and callings in the Church. We all have the opportunity to serve others. We all have the responsibility to act as true followers of Jesus Christ in all that we do and say.
私たちは皆教会で責任や召しを持っています。私たちは皆他の誰かに仕える機会があります。私たちは皆自分の言動において真のイエス・キリストに従う者としてふさわしく行動する責任を持っています。
Why do we do these things?
では何故そうするのでしょう？
We do these things because we love the Lord. We do these things because we want to show him that we love him. We do these things because we want to be happy.
それは私たちは主を愛しているからそうするのです。私たちは主を愛していることを示したいのでそうするのです。私たちは幸せになりたいのでそうするのです。
We have all experienced the joy that comes through service to others. We have all experienced the joy that comes through keeping the commandments. This joy is the blessing promised by the Savior in this short scripture.
私たちは皆他の誰かに仕えることから来る喜びを経験したことがあります。私たちは皆戒めを守ることから来る喜びを経験したことがあります。この喜びは救い主がこの短い聖句で約束してくださった祝福なのです。
Are you feeling unhappy? Are you feeling depressed? Are you feeling that your life does not matter?
あなたは不幸だと感じていますか？落胆していますか？あなたの人生はどうでもよいと感じていますか？
The way to be happy is to do the things that we have been taught to do. We need to serve in our own callings. We need to attend all of our Church meetings. We need to accept assignments to serve others.
幸せになる方法は行うよう教えられたことを行うことです。私たちの召しを果たし、教会のすべての集会に出席し、他の誰かのために仕える責任を受け入れることです。
It is not always convenient to do these things. It is not always convenient to fulfill our home teaching or visiting teaching assignments. It is not always convenient to fulfill assignments to go to the Temple. It is not always convenient to fulfill assignments to set up or take down chairs for an activity.
それを行うのにいつも都合がよいとは限りません。ホームティーチングや訪問教師の責任を遂行するのはいつも楽だとは限りません。神殿に行く責任はいつも簡単とは限りません。教会の活動のために椅子を出したり片づけることはいつも楽とは限りません。
This scripture does not say that we only need to do the convenient things. It does not say we should only do the easy things. It says that if we take action, if we do what we have been taught, we will be happy.
この聖句は私たちに都合の良いことだけするようにとは述べていません。易しいことだけするようにとも述べていません。もし私たちが行動を起こし教えられたことを行うなら、私たちは幸福になると教えています。
Let’s all be happy this week. Let’s all be more willing to accept and to fulfill assignments. Let’s all be better followers of Jesus Christ. Let’s all be happy!
幸せに今週も過ごしましょう。もっと快く責任を引き受けそれを遂行しましょう。もっとよいイエス・キリストの従者になりましょう。幸せになりましょう。
