そしてわたしはサムに、主が聖なる御霊によってわたしに明らかにしてくださったことを話して聞かせた。そこで、サムはわたしの言葉を信じた。ニーファイ第１書２：１７
And I spake unto Sam, making known unto him the things which the Lord had manifested unto me by his Holy Spirit. And it came to pass that he believed my words. 1 Nephi 2:17
In this short scripture, Nephi teaches us an important principle.
この短い聖句でニーファイは大切な原則を私たちに教えています。
This scripture was given when Lehi and his family first started out on their journey. Lehi and his family had traveled for three days into the wilderness and had stopped to rest.
この聖句はリーハイと彼の家族が初めて旅立った時、与えられたものです。リーハイと彼の家族は荒れ野の中を三日間旅した後、休みをとりました。
As you will remember, Laman and Lemuel complained and did not want to leave their home and go into the wilderness. Lehi had to speak with them “with power, being filled with the Spirit”.
ご存知のようにレーマンとレムエルは文句を言いました。彼らは家を離れ荒れ野になど行きたくありませんでした。リーハイは彼らに「聖霊に満たされ力強く」話しました。
Sam, on the other hand, seems to have been willing to follow the counsel of his father, Lehi. This was a result of Nephi’s actions, as recorded in this short scripture.
いっぽうサムは父リーハイの勧告に従いたいと望んでいました。それはこの短い聖句に書かれているようにニーファイの行動の結果なのです。
Nephi had already received a testimony of the truthfulness of what his father was doing. Nephi says that he “cried unto the Lord” and that he “did believe all the words of my father”.
ニーファイはすでに父が行っていることが確かであるという証を持っていました。ニーファイは「主に叫び」「父の言葉をすべて信じた」と述べています。
What did Nephi do then? He helped his older brother, Sam, to understand what the Lord had taught to Nephi. He explained all the things that the Lord had said. He bore his testimony that those things were true.
そこでニーファイはどうしたでしょう？彼は主がニーファイに教えられたことを理解できるよう兄のサムを助けました。彼は主が言われたことすべてを説明して聞かせました。それらのことが真実だと証を述べました。
What was the result?
その結果はどうでしたか？
The result was that Sam, unlike Laman and Lemuel, did not complain. Sam believed that things that Nephi taught him.
結果、サムはレーマンやレムエルと違い、文句を言ったりせず、ニーファイの教えたことを信じました。
Like Nephi, we have also been taught about the Lord. Like Nephi, we have also received a testimony.
私たちもニーファイのように主について教えを受けています。ニーファイのように証を受けています。
We have a testimony that Jesus Christ is our Savior. We have a testimony that Joseph Smith was a prophet. We have a testimony that the Book of Mormon is true. We have a testimony that we are led by living prophets and apostles today.
私たちはイエス・キリストが救い主だという証を持っています。ジョセフ・スミスが預言者であるという証を持っていますし、モルモン書が真実だという証を持っています。生ける預言者と使徒に今日も導かれているという証を持っています。
What is our responsibility?
では私たちは何をする必要があるでしょう？
Just like Nephi, we have a responsibility to share our testimony with others. We have a responsibility to help others learn about the gospel. We have a responsibility to help strengthen the faith and testimony of our family members, ward members, and our friends.
ニーファイのように私たちには証を他の人に分かち合う責任がありますす。他の人が福音を学べるよう助ける責任があります。私たちの家族やワードの会員、友人の信仰や証が強まるよう助ける責任があります。
We can do this in many ways. We can share our testimony during Fast and Testimony meeting. We can bear our testimony during our Family Home Evening lessons. We can bear our testimony as we teach a class.
私たちは多くの方法でそうすることができます。断食証会で自分の証を分かち合うことができます。家庭の夕べのレッスンで証を述べることができます。クラスで教えるとき証を述べることができます。
A testimony does not have to be long or complicated. A short testimony can be very powerful. The important thing is that we testify about those things that we know to be true.
証は長くて難しい必要はありません。短かい証でもとても力強いものです。大切なのは自分が知っていることが真実だと証することです。
As we share our testimony with others, we will be following the example of Nephi. Even though some who hear our testimony may not be like Sam, it is still important that we complete our responsibility to share our testimony with them.
自分の証を他の人に分かち合うことは私たちがニーファイの模範に従っていることになるのです。私たちの証を聞くものがサムのように受け入れなくても、私たちが彼らに証を分かち合う責任を全うすることは大切なのです。
Let’s look for opportunities this week to share our testimony with someone. Whether it is in a formal setting like Fast and Testimony meeting, or an informal setting in our own home, or just as part of a conversation with a friend, let’s try to follow the example set for us by Nephi.
今週、誰かに自分の証を分かち合う機会を探してみましょう。それが断食証会のような公式な場であれ、自分の家のようなくつろいだ環境、友人との会話の中であれニーファイが示した模範に従ってみましょう。
I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior. I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet. I know that we are led by living prophets today. I know that the Lord will lead and guide each of us, as we do our best to keep his commandments and to follow Nephi’s example.
イエス・キリストが私たちの救い主だと知っています。ジョセフ・スミスが預言者であり、私たちは今日生ける預言者に導かれることを知っています。私たちが主の戒めを最善を尽くして守ろうとし、ニーファイの模範に従う時、主が私たち一人一人を教え導かれることを知っています。
