さて、わたしニーファイは木で一つの弓を作り、まっすぐな枝で一本の矢を作った。それでわたしは、弓と矢、石投げと石で身を固め、『食料を得るのにどこへ行ったらよいですか』と父に尋ねた。ニーファイ第１書１６：２３

And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did make out of wood a bow, and out of a straight stick, an arrow; wherefore, I did arm myself with a bow and an arrow, with a sling and with stones.  And I said unto my father: Whither shall I go to obtain food?  1 Nephi 16:23

Nephi teaches us an important lesson in this scripture.  He and his family were traveling through the wilderness.  It was a very hard time for them.  

ニーファイはこの聖句で大切なレッスンを教えています。彼と家族は荒れ野を旅していましたが、それはとても辛いものでした。

They had many trials and hardships.  The only way they could get food was to hunt wild animals.  

彼らは多くの試練や苦難を受けました。食料を手に入れる唯一の手段は野生の動物を捕ることでした。

But Nephi’s bow broke.  He was not able to get any food for his family.  Everyone in his family was angry with him.

しかしニーファイの弓が壊れてしまい、家族のために食料を得ることが出来なくなりました。家族のだれもが彼に腹を立てました。

Nephi could not get another steel bow.  So he made a new bow from wood.  He asked his father where he should go to get food.  By following his father’s instructions, Nephi was able to find food for his family.

ニーファイは代わりの丈夫な鋼の弓を作ることはできませんでした。そこで木から新しい弓を作りました。彼は父にどこに行けば食料を得ることが出来るか尋ねました。父の指示に従ったことでニーファイは家族のために食料を見つけることが出来ました。

There are many lessons in this for us.

この話から多くレッスンを学ぶことが出来ます。

First, like Nephi and his family, we all have difficult trials and hardships.  Nephi did not get angry with the Lord because of the trials.  He went forward with faith.

まず、ニーファイと彼の家族のように私たちにも試練や苦難があります。ニーファイは試練のために主に腹を立てたりはしませんでした。信仰を持って前に進みました。

In addition to the hardships they had, Nephi’s bow broke.  This was a great trial.  That bow was very important to them.  Nephi had to use the bow to get food for his family.  

彼らの苦難に加えてニーファイの弓が折れてしまいました。これは大きな試練でした。彼らにとってその弓はとても大事なものでした。家族に食料を採るためその弓を使う必要があったのです。

But when his bow broke, he did not blame the Lord.  He did not say “Why me?”.  He did not say “Why do I have such a terrible trial?”.

しかし彼の弓が折れた時、主を責めませんでした。彼は”どうして私なの？”と言いませんでした。彼は”どうしてこんなひどい試練を受けなければならないの？”とも言いませんでした。

Even though it was not his fault that the bow broke, his family was angry with him.  They blamed him for not getting any food.  

弓が折れたのは彼のせいではありませんでしたが、家族は彼に怒りました。彼らは何も食料を採らなかったことを責めました。

Nephi did not get angry with his family.  He knew they were hungry.  He knew they were suffering.  He knew that they needed food.

ニーファイは家族に腹を立てませんでした。彼らが空腹で、苦しんでいると知っていたのです。彼らが食料が要ることを知っていたのです。

Nephi knew that he could not get a new steel bow.  But he did not give up.  He did not get angry.  He did not complain.

ニーファイは新しい丈夫な鋼で出来た弓を手に入れることはできないことを知っていました。しかし諦めませんでした。彼は腹も立てませんでした。文句を言いませんでした。

Nephi acted.  Instead of complaining about what he did not have, he used the things that he did have.  

ニーファイは行動しました。持っていないものについて文句を言う代わりに持っているものを使いました。

He made a new bow from wood.  That was the only thing that he could do.  It was not as good as a steel bow, but it was the best that he could do.

彼は木から新しい弓を作りました。それは唯一彼が出来ることでした。丈夫な鋼でできた弓ほど良くできてはいませんでしたが彼に出来る最善のことでした。

Finally, after Nephi had done all that he could on his own, he went to his priesthood leader and asked for instructions.  He asked where he should go to get food for his family.  By following the instructions of his priesthood leader, he was able to get food for his family.

最後に、ニーファイは自分で出来るすべてのことを行った後、教えを仰ぎに神権指導者のところに行きました。彼は家族の食料を得るにはどこに行ったらよいか尋ねました。神権指導者の指示に従い、彼は家族の食料を得ることが出来ました。

In our own lives, we need to follow this example of Nephi.  We need to go forward with faith.  We need to make use of the things the Lord has given us.  It may not be the best solution, but if all we have is a “wooden bow”, we still need to do our best.

私たち自身の生活でもニーファイの模範に従う必要があります。信仰によって前に進まねばなりません。主が与えてくださったものを利用する必要があります。それは最善の手段ではないかもしれませんが、私たちにただ”木の弓”しかなければ、それで最善を尽くさなければなりません。

After we have done all that we can do, we need to turn to the Lord for instructions.  The Lord knows what is best for us.  He will help us and guide us.  But we must do our part first.  If we go forward with faith, if we do our best, if we use the things that Lord has blessed us with, we will be guided and directed.

私たちは出来ることをすべて行った後、主に指示を仰ぐ必要があります。主は何が私たちにとって最善なのかご存知です。しかし私たちのほうですべきことをしなければなりません。信仰を持って前進し、最善を尽くし、主が祝福して与えてくださったものを使うならば私たちは導かれ指示を受けます。

May we go forward with faith this week.  May we remember that complaining does not solve any problem.  May we remember that we need to use the things that the Lord has given us.  May we always rely on the Lord for instructions and directions.  I know that if we follow Nephi’s example, we will receive the blessings that we need.

今週も信仰を持って前進できますように。不満を言うことは何の解決にもならないことを、また主が与えてくださったものを利用しなければならないことを覚えておきましょう。指示や進むべき道について常に主に頼れますように。ニーファイの模範に従えば私たちに必要な祝福を受けれると知っています。
