わたしは主から命じられた事柄を知っており、それに誇りを感じている。わたしは自分自身のことを誇らないで、主から命じられた事柄を誇る。神の御手に使われる者となって幾人かでも悔い改めに導けること、これがわたしの誇、喜びである。アルマ書２９：９

I know that which the Lord hath commanded me, and I glory in it.  I do not glory of myself, but I glory in that which the Lord hath commanded me: yea, and this is my glory, that perhaps I may be an instrument in the hands of God to bring some soul to repentance; and this is my glory.  Alma 29:9

This scripture is found in the 29th chapter of Alma.  In this chapter, Alma shares his feelings about serving in the Church and wishes that he was an angel so that he could teach everyone.

これはアルマ書２９章にある聖句です。この章ではアルマは教会で奉仕することや自分が天使になってすべての人々に教えることができればという彼の望みを伝えています。

In verse 9, Alma teaches us an important lesson.

第９節ではアルマが大切な教えを残しています。

verse 9, Alma teaches us that we do not “glory in ourselves”.  That means that we do not have pride in ourselves, just because we are serving.  Alma teaches us that we should only have pride in the work of the Lord, not in our efforts.

そこでは「自分自身のことを誇らない」ようにと教えています。その意味は自分が仕えているからという理由で自分自身を誇ってはならないということです。アルマは自分の努力や力ではなく、ただ主の業を誇るよう教えています。

The most important part of this scripture is found in the last few words.  

この聖句でもっとも重要なのは最後の短い言葉にあります。

Alma teaches us that his glory, or the desire of his heart, is to be “an instrument in the hands of God”.

アルマは彼の誇りや真の望みが「神の御手に使われる者となる」ことであると教えています。

Why does he want to do this?  “to bring some soul to repentance”.  

なぜ彼はそうしたいのでしょう？「幾人かでも悔い改めに導きたい」と。

This should be our glory and the desire of our heart.  We should all want to be an instrument in the hands of God, to help in his work.

これが私たちの誇りで、また真の望みであるべきです。私たちはみな神の御手に使われる者となる望みを持つべきです。

What does it mean to be “an instrument“ in the hands of God?  

「神の御手に使われる者」とはどのような意味なのでしょう？

It means to serve others in any way that we can.  It means to accept and fulfill our callings.  It means to listen for prompting from the Spirit of the Lord.  It means following those promptings.

それは私たちができるかぎりのことをして他の誰かを助けることです。それは召しを受け入れ遂行することです。それは主の御霊のささやきや促しに耳を傾けることです。それはそのささやきや促しに従うことです。

There are always opportunities for us to serve others.  Every day, there are those around us who need help.  Usually, we don’t know that they need help.  They don’t ask for help.  But the Lord knows their hearts and their trials.

私たちにはいつでも他の誰かに仕える機会があります。毎日、助けの必要とする人が私たちの回りにいます。殆どの場合、彼らに助けが必要だと私たちは気付きません。彼らは助けて欲しいとは言いません。しかし主は彼らの心やかかえている試練をご存知です。

He gives us promptings and opportunities to be an instrument in his hands.  All we have to do is to follow those promptings and take action.

主は私たちが主の御手に使われる者となるよう心の促しと仕える機会を与えてくださいます。私たちがなすべきことはただその心の促しに聞き従い行動を起こすことだけです。

Great blessings will come to us as we listen carefully for these promptings.  Great blessings will come into the lives of others as we act on those promptings.  We will be blessed and those we serve will be blessed.

その心の促しや啓示を注意深く聞くときに素晴らしい祝福がやってきます。その心の促しにしたがって行動するとき素晴らしい祝福が仕える相手の人々にもやってきます。私たち自身も祝福され、私たちが仕えた人々も祝福されることでしょう。

Let’s try harder this week to listen to the promptings we are given.  Let’s pray for more opportunities to serve.  Let’s do our best to become instruments in the hands of God.

今週、私たちが受ける心の促しに耳を傾けるようもっと努力しましょう。もっと仕えることのできる機会を求めてお祈りしましょう。そして神の御手に使われる者となるよう最善を尽くしましょう。
