しかし見よ、わたしはただの人であり、このように願うことさえも罪である。わたしは主から与えられたもので満足すべきだからである。アルマ２９：３
But behold, I am a man, and do sin in my wish; for I ought to be content with the things which the Lord hath allotted unto me. Alma 29:3
This interesting scripture follows a few verses after Alma’s famous “O that I were an angel” scripture. In that scripture, Alma wishes that he could “speak with the trump of God” and “cry repentance unto every people”.
この興味深い聖句はアルマが「おお、わたしが天使であって」と述べている良く知られた聖句の何節か後に出てきます。その聖句でアルマは「神のラッパのように」「すべての民に悔改めを叫ぶ」ことが出来たらと心のうちを明かしています。
This is a very righteous wish. Alma wants to preach the gospel to everyone and to help everyone come unto Christ. He recognizes that his own talents and abilities are not adequate for the task of preaching the gospel to everyone.
とても正しく素晴らしい望みです。アルマは全ての人に福音を延べ伝えて彼らがキリストの元に来れるよう望みました。しかし、彼自身の才能や能力では福音を全ての人に延べ伝える作業は無理だと理解していました。
So he wishes that he could have “super powers”. He wishes that he could be an angel. He wishes that he could have a voice that everyone could hear.
それで彼は「超越した力」が欲しいと望みました。天使になれたらよいのに、また誰もが聞こえる声があればよいのにと望みました。
But after making that wish, he realizes that it is not a good wish. True, it was a wish for a good purpose. But he recognizes that it is selfish to wish for those things.
しかしそう望んだ後、彼はそれはよい望みではないことに気が付きました。確かにそれは良い目的のための望みではありますが、それを望むのは利己的であると理解しました。
He teaches us a great lesson here.
ここで彼は私たちに素晴らしいレッスンを教えています。
Even though his wish was to be able to accomplish more good things, he understood that it was not a correct wish.
彼の望みは更に良いことを成し遂げれるようにというものでしたが、それは正しい望みではないとことを理解していました。
He says, “I ought to be content with the things which the Lord hath allotted to me”.
彼は「わたしは主から与えられたもので満足すべきである」と述べています。
Are we sometimes like Alma? Do we sometimes wish for things that we think would help us do more good? Do we sometimes want “super powers”?
私たちも時としてアルマのようではありませんか？もっと良いことができるよう色んなことを望みませんか？時として「超越した力」を欲しいと思いませんか？
Perhaps we think, “if I only had more money, I could help many people”. Or, “if I had lots of money, I could serve a mission right now”. Or, “if I were a better speaker, I could help teach others about the gospel”. Or, “if I had more talents, I would be a better minister”.
おそらく「もっとお金があれば多くの人を助けてあげれるのに」と考えたり、「沢山お金があれば今伝道に出れるのに」とか、「自分がもっと上手な話し手だったら他の人に福音を教えることが出来るのに」とか、「もっと才能があればもっとよく奉仕できるのに」と考えるとがあるでしょう。
All of those things are good. It would be nice to help more people. It would be nice to serve a mission. It would be nice to teach others about the gospel. It would be nice to be a better minister.
それらは全て良い望みです。多くの人を助けれればよいでしょう。伝道にでて奉仕できれば素晴らしいでしょう。福音について誰かを伝えることが出来ればよいでしょう。もっと奉仕し教導できるのはよいことです。
But that is not how the Lord’s plan works. We are here in this life to learn and to grow. If we are given “super powers” without any effort on our part, we are not learning or growing.
しかし主の業はそのようには動きません。私たちは学び成長するためにここにいます。もし私たちが何も努力しなくても「超越した力」が与えられるなら私たちには学びも成長もありません。
We have all been given certain talents. Each of us is different. My talents are probably different than your talents. You may be much better at many things that I am. But I can still contribute, using the talent that the Lord has blessed me with.
私たちの誰もが何かしらの才能を受けています。私たちは皆異なった存在です。私の才能はおそらく貴方とは違うでしょう。あなたは私より多くの事で優れているかもしれません。それでも私は主が祝福してくださった才能を使って貢献することができます。
Maybe your talent is simply to be a friend to those in need. Maybe your talent is to be a good listener. Maybe your talent is to notice the lonely. Maybe your talent is to share uplifting music.
もしかしてあなたの才能は必要とする人の友達になることかもしれません。もしかしてあなたの才能は良い聞き手になることかもしれません。もしかしてあなたの才能は孤独な人を気付いてあげることかもしれません。もしかしてあなたの才能は霊を鼓舞する音楽を分かち合うことかもしれません。
Every talent is important. Every person is important.
どの才能も大切です。誰もが大切なのです。
Let’s go forward this week, remembering what talents the Lord has blessed us with. Let’s go forward this week, using those talents to bless the lives of others. Let’s go forward this week, improving our own talents by using them in the service of the Lord.
主が祝福してくださった才能を覚えて今週を過ごしましょう。それらの才能を使って誰かの人生を祝福しながら今週も頑張りましょう。主の御業に貢献することで自身の才能を伸ばし今週も前進しましょう。
