The word of the Lord came unto me saying, Moreover, thou son of man, take thee on stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions; then take another stick, and write upon it, for Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions; And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. Ezekiel 37:15-17
The prophet Ezekiel lived in a time after Isaiah and Jeremiah. He lived in a time when Israel was in captivity in Babylon. Just as both Isaiah and Jeremiah had prophesied, Israel had rejected the Lord and had killed the prophets that the Lord has sent to warn them. Because of their choices, the Lord had allowed Nebuchadnezzar to capture Jerusalem and to take the people into captivity.

Ezekiel was among the captives that were taken to Babylon. He was called as a prophet after he had been a captive for about 5 years. There are many great and wonderful teachings contained in the book of Ezekiel. In chapter 3, and again in chapter 18, we are told that we have a responsibility to each the gospel to others and that, if we do not warn them, the sin will be on our own heads.

In chapter 37, Ezekiel is shown in vision a great valley of dry bones. The dry bones represented the house of Israel. After having rejected the Lord, they were scattered and cut off from the “true vine”. But Ezekiel saw that, in the due time of the Lord, those dry bones would be restored to life. This is a representation of the gathering of Israel in the last days.

Perhaps the best known of the prophecies of Ezekiel is contained in these verses from chapter 37. In this vision, Ezekiel is told to take two “sticks”. On one stick, he is to write about Judah. On the other stick, he is to write about Joseph. A “stick”, we are told, is another word for scroll. Ezekiel is taught that there will be one scroll for the history of Judah and another scroll for the history of Joseph.

Ezekiel was already familiar with the stick or scroll for Judah. This scroll contained the writings of Moses and all the other prophets, down to the days of Jeremiah. In our day, we consider the Bible, which contains many of these same writings, to be the history of the tribe of Judah.

Even as Ezekiel was prophesying about the “stick of Joseph”, that scroll was already being written. Lehi and his family had left before the destruction of Jerusalem. They were in the promised land and were writing the words of the prophets who were called to teach them. This “stick of Joseph” is the Book of Mormon.

As Ezekiel prophesied more than 2,500 years ago, the two “sticks”, the record of Judah and the record of Joseph, have become one in our day. They are both holy scriptures that teach us about the Lord and his commandments. They both testify of our Savior Jesus Christ.
エゼキエルが 2,500 年以上前に預言したように、ユダの記録とヨセフの記録という 2 つの「木」は、今日では 1 つになっています。どちらも主と主の戒めについて教えてくれる聖典です。どちらも救い主イエス・キリストについて証しています。
It is a great testimony to us that the Old Testament prophets knew about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon in the last days. The Lord knows exactly what will happen and when it will happen. The Book of Mormon is the word of God. It is a second testimony of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a holy book of scripture.
終わりの日にモルモン書が世に出ることを旧約聖書の預言者たちが知っていたことは、私たちにとって大きな証です。主は何が起こるか、いつ起こるかを確かにご存知です。モルモン書は神の言葉です。それは私たちの主イエス・キリストの第二の証です。聖なる聖典です。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember that the coming forth of the Book of Mormon was foretold by Old Testament prophets. Let’s remember that we have a responsibility to read and to study the Book of Mormon and its teachings. Let’s follow the counsel of modern day prophets and apostles and read the Book of Mormon every day.
