そして、民の心の中に宿っていた神の愛のために、地の面にはまったく争いがなかった。また、ねたみや、紛争、騒動、みだらな行い、偽り、殺人もなく、どのような好色もなく、神の手によって造られたすべての人の中で、彼ら以上に幸せな民は確かにあり得なかった。第四ニーファイ１:１５−１６
And it came to pass that there was no contention in all the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people. And there were no envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness; and surely there could not have been a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God. 4 Nephi 1:15-16
The book of 4th Nephi is interesting. Like the book of Omni, it covers a period of several hundred years in just a few pages. The main difference is, whereas Omni records a period of great wickedness, 4th Nephi records a time of great righteousness.
第4ニーファイは興味深く、オムナイ書のように、ほんの数ページで数百年の期間を網羅しています。 主な違いは、オムナイがとても邪悪な期間を記録しているのに対して、第4ニーファイはとても義にかなった期間を記録していることです。
For about 200 years after the Savior visited the Nephite people, there was continual peace in the land. Everyone, both Nephite and Lamanite, had been converted to the gospel. Everyone, both Nephite and Lamanite, kept the commandments. Everyone, both Nephite and Lamanite, received great blessings from the Lord.
救い主がニーファイ人を訪れてから約200年間、この地には平和が続いていました。ニーファイ人もレーマン人も、誰もが福音に改心していました。ニーファイ人もレーマン人も誰もが戒めを守りました。ニーファイ人もレーマン人も、誰もが主から大きな祝福を受けました。
One of the things that makes 4th Nephi interesting is, even though it was a period of great righteousness, there is very little written about what happened during those years. There must have been great miracles performed, wonderful revelations received, and marvelous spiritual experiences given to the people.
第4ニーファイが興味深い理由の一つは、それがとても義にかなった時代であったものの、その期間に何が起こったのか殆ど書かれていないことです。大いなる奇跡が行われ、大いなる啓示が与えられ、人々に大いなる霊的な経験があったに違いありません。
However, Mormon just gives us a very brief look at this wonderful time. In some ways, this is the pattern that we can look forward to in the future. We know that when the Savior comes again to the earth, there will be a long period of time when the people will again be able to live like the people in the time of 4th Nephi.
しかし、モルモンはこの素晴らしい期間をとても短く省略して記録しています。ある意味で、これは私たちが将来期待できるところかもしれません。救い主が再び地上に来られたとき、第4ニーファイの時代の民のように私たちが暮らすようになるには、長い時間がかかることを知っています。
What a wonderful time it must have been. Mormon tells us that “there could not have been a happier people”.
素晴らしい時代だったに違いありません。モルモンは、「彼ら以上に幸せな民は確かにあり得なかった」と語っています。
Why were they so happy?
なぜ彼らはそんなに幸せだったのでしょうか？
They were all happy because they were all living the gospel. They were all happy because they were all keeping the commandments. They were all happy because they were able to receive the blessings that come from obeying the commandments.
彼らは皆、福音に生きていたので幸せでした。彼らは皆、戒めを守っていたので幸せでした。戒めに従うことから来る祝福を受けることができたので幸せでした。
Wouldn’t it be nice if that was how everyone lived in the world today.
今の世界でも誰もがその様に暮らしていたら素晴らしいと思いませんか。
We look around our world today and see troubles, trials, and hardships. We see people committing many sins. We see sadness and hopelessness.
今日、私たちの周りには、苦難や、試練、そして困難を目にします。人々が多くの罪を犯すのを見たり、悲しみと絶望を抱える人々を目にします。
However, we too can be the happiest people. Just because the world rejects the gospel and the commandments, it does not mean that we cannot be happy.
しかし、私たちも最も幸福な民となることができます。世界が福音と戒めを拒否したからといって、私たちが幸福になれないという意味ではありません。
Just like the people in the time of 4th Nephi, we can have the love of God in our hearts. We can keep the commandments. We can have faith. We can serve others. We can rise above the sinful nature of the world. We can be true disciples of our Savior Jesus Christ.
第4ニーファイの時代の人々と同じように、私たちは心に神の愛を抱くことができます。私たちは戒めを守り、信仰を持つことができます。私たちは他の人に仕え、世界の罪深い体質に立ち上がることができます。私たちは救い主イエス・キリストの真の弟子となることができます。
We too can be the happiest people.
私たちも最も幸福な民となることができます。
As we go through this week, let’s remember that happiness is not dependent upon what others think, or say, or do. Happiness is dependent only upon what we ourselves think and say and do. If we have faith in Jesus Christ, if we keep his commandments, if we do our best, we too will receive the same blessings as the people in the time of 4th Nephi.
新しい週が始まります。幸福は、他人がどう考え、話し、行動するかということには依存しないことを心にとめてください。幸福は、私たち自身がどう考え、話し、行動するかによるのです。私たちがイエス・キリストを信じ、主の戒めを守り、私たちが最善を尽くすなら、私たちもまた第4ニーファイの時代の民と同じ祝福を受けるでしょう。
