見よ、あなたは理解していなかった。あなたはわたしに求めさえすれば、何も考えなくてもわたしから与えられると思ってきた。教義と聖約９：７
Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me. Doctrine & Covenants 9:7
We are all familiar with this scripture from the Doctrine & Covenants. Oliver Cowdery had asked to be allowed to translate some of the Book of Mormon. But he failed.
私たちは教義と誓約のこの聖句を良く知っています。オリバー・カウドリーはモルモン書の一部を翻訳をさせてもらうことを求めていました。しかしそれは叶いませんでした。
In this scripture, the Lord explains to Oliver that he had to more than to just ask.
この聖句で主はオリバーにただ求めるだけではなく、それ以上の事をしなければならないと言われました。
This is an important lesson for all of us.
これは私たちにも大切なレッスンです。
Sometimes, when we are faced with a difficult problem, we act like Oliver. We want to make the right decision, but we want the answer immediately and without too much work.
私たちが困難な問題に直面するとき、オリバーのように振舞うことがあります。私たちは正しい選択をしたいと思っていますが、あまり努力なしに、しかも答えをすぐに期待したりします。
We try to do our part to solve the problem. We pray about it. We think about it. We even meet with our bishop and ask for his counsel. But still the answer does not come.
私たちは問題を解決するため自分のすべき事を行ないます。それについて祈り、深く考えてみます。ビショップに会い助言を求めたりもします。しかしそれでも答えがやってきません。
When this happens, we wonder why. Why doesn’t the answer come? Why doesn’t the Lord help me? Why doesn’t the bishop tell me what to do?
そのような時、どうしてだろうと不安になります。なぜ答えが来ないのだろう？なぜ主は私を助けてくださらないのだろう？なぜビショップは何をすべきか教えてくれないのだろうと。
What we sometimes want is for the bishop to say: “go out of the building and turn left. Walk north for ten minutes. Turn right. There you will find the answer”.
私たちは時々ビショップにこのような助言をしてくれるよう期待します。「教会の建物を出たら左に曲がりなさい。北に１０分歩き、右に曲がったところに答えがあります」と。
We want very specific and easy to understand answers to our problem.
私たちは自分の問題について非常に明確でしかも簡単な解答を望みます。
But that is not how the Lord works. Many times, when we meet with the bishop, he gives us good counsel. He encourages us to have faith, to keep praying, to keep reading the scriptures. But none of those things seem to relate directly to solving our problem.
しかし、それは主の方法ではありません。多くの場合、私たちがビショップに会うとき、よい助言や勧告を与えてくれます。彼は信仰を持ち、続けて祈り、聖文を続けて読むよう励ましてくれます。しかしそれらのどれも私たちの抱える問題を解決することには直接関わりない様に思えます。
In a recent talk, one of the Seventy said that if we always got a specific answer from our bishop about how to solve every problem in our life, we would be getting “spiritual welfare”. When we receive welfare, we get something that we did not work for.
最近聞いた話ですが、七十人の一人が、もし私たちがビショップからいつも人生の問題を解決するために明確で具体的な答えを受けていたら、それは「霊の福祉」を受けることになると言いました。私たちが福祉を受ける時、それは私たちが働かずして何かを受けるということなのです。
The Lord knows what we need to do to grow and to learn. Rather than letting us have “spiritual welfare”, he provides opportunities for us to experience trials and difficulties. It is through these trials that we develop greater faith in the Lord and learn to be better.
主は私たちが成長し、学ぶためには何が必要かをご存知です。ただ「霊の福祉」受けるのではなく主は私たちに試練と困難を経験する機会を与えてくださいます。それらの試練を通して私たちはより強い信仰を育て、より良い人間になることを学ぶのです。
The Lord loves each one of us. He wants us to succeed. He wants us to be happy. But he knows that we have many things to learn. He knows that some of those lessons can only be learned as we go through trials.
主は私たち一人一人を愛しておられます。主は私たちに成功して欲しいと望んでおられます。主は私たちに幸せになって欲しいと望んでおられます。しかし私たちはそのために多くのことを学ぶ必要があることをご存知です。主は学ぶべきことの幾つかは試練を経験しなければ学べないことをご存知です。
Let’s work hard this week to have greater faith in the Lord. Let’s remember that we do not want to receive “spiritual welfare”. Let’s do all the things that we need to do, then wait patiently for the Lord to give us the guidance we seek.
今週、主へよりしっかりした信仰を持てるよう熱心につとめましょう。「霊の福祉」などは受けたくないことを覚えていましょう。なすべきすべてのことを行い、私たちが求める導きを主が与えてくださるのを忍耐強く待ちましょう。
I know that, as hard as trials are, blessings come to us as we keep the commandments and go forward with faith. I know that the Lord will give us the answers we need, when the time is right. I know that these things are true.
試練が大きいほど、戒めを守り、信仰を持って前進することで（より大きな）祝福がやってきます。主は（一番良いと思われる）主の時に私たちに必要な答えを与えてくださることを私は知っています。私はこれらが真実だと知っています。
