The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. For the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and the prophet Jeremiah was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house. For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.
Jeremiah 32:1-3
Jeremiah was called to be the Lord’s prophet during a very difficult time for Israel. The people had once again rejected the Lord and his prophets. These prophets included Jeremiah and Lehi, as well as many others. In 1 Nephi 1:4, Nephi tells us that “there came many prophets, prophesying unto the people that they must repent, or the great city of Jerusalem must be destroyed”.

Sadly, the people of Jerusalem did not repent. The leaders of the people, including the wicked Laban, thought they could fight against the armies of Babylon. They did not believe the words of the prophets. Nephi tells us that the people tried to kill the prophets, including Lehi.

In this scripture, we learn that king Zedekiah was very angry with Jeremiah. Jeremiah prophesied that Jerusalem would be destroyed unless the people repented. He said that the king of Babylon would destroy Jerusalem and that king Zedekiah would be taken to Babylon as a prisoner. Because Jeremiah prophesied all these things, king Zedekiah put Jeremiah in prison.

In the Book of Mormon, there are many references to these events.

In 1 Nephi 7:14, Nephi is shown in vision that Jeremiah had been put into prison. In chapter 25 of Mosiah, we are told that the people of Zarahemla were descendants of Mulek and those who came with him. In Helaman 8:21, we are told that all of the sons of Zedekiah were killed with the exception of Mulek.

All these things testify that the writers of the Book of Mormon record wrote about real events. They knew about the history of Jerusalem. They knew about the contentions and political problems in Jerusalem at the time of Jeremiah and Lehi. They knew about the killing of all of Zedekiah’s sons, except for Mulek.

It was Jeremiah’s assignment to remain in Jerusalem and to warn the people of what was to come. Just like today, most of the people did not accept the words of the Lord’s prophet. Just like today, most of the people did not want to hear about repentance. Just like today, the people did not want to be told that they needed to change.
エルサレムにとどまり、これから起こることについて人々に警告することはエレミヤの任務でした。今日と同じように、ほとんどの人は主の預言者の言葉を受け入れませんでした。今日と同じように、ほとんどの人は悔い改めについて聞きたがりませんでした。今日と同じように、人々は変わる必要があると言われたくなかったのです。
It is a great blessing to have a prophet of the Lord to lead us. Unlike the people in the days of Jeremiah, let’s resolve to always follow the prophet. Let’s listen to his counsel and study his words. Let’s remember what happened to the people in the days of Jeremiah who rejected the prophets. Let’s stay on the path to happiness.
わたしたちを導いてくださる主の預言者がいることは大きな祝福です。エレミヤの時代の人々とは異なり、常に預言者に従うことを決意しましょう。彼の勧告に耳を傾け、彼の言葉を研究しましょう。預言者を退けたエレミヤの時代の人々に何が起こったのか忘れないでください。幸福への道にとどまるようにしましょう。
