なぜなら、このしばらくの軽い患難は働いて、永遠の重い栄光を、あふれるばかりにわたしたちに得させるからである。コリント人への第二の手紙４：１７
For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. 2 Corinthians 4:17
In many of his letters to the early Saints, Paul mentions the great difficulties and trials that he had to endure. He was often arrested, put in prison, or physically attacked. His travels by ship often made him experience bad storms. He spent much of his later ministry as a prisoner.
初期の聖徒に宛てた数多くの手紙で、パウロは彼が忍耐しなければならなかった多くの苦難や試練について触れています。彼は幾度も逮捕され、獄に入れられ肉体的にも痛めつけられました。船旅もしばしば彼に嵐を経験させました。彼はその後に囚われの身として教導を行いました。
In this scripture, Paul teaches us two important lessons about trials and troubles.
この聖句ではパウロは私たちに試練と苦難について二つの重要な教訓を教えています。
First, he teaches us that, while we all have our own trials and tests in this life, those trials and tests are only “light affliction” and are only “for a moment”.
第一に、彼はこの世で私たちは誰でも試練や試しを受けますが、それは「軽い患難」であり「しばらくの間」であることを私たちに教えています。
To us, every trial that comes into our lives seems heavy. Every trial that comes in to our lives seems to last a very long time. Every trial that comes into our lives seems to be a great burden.
私たちにとって受ける試練はどれも重くて辛く感じます。人生で受けるどの試練もとても長く続くように感じます。どの試練もとても大きな重荷に感じます。
But Paul reminds us that this life is very short when compared to eternity. What is a month, a year, even 10 or 20 years, compared to eternity?
しかしパウロはこの人生は永遠に比べると非常に短いことを思い起こさせています。一ヶ月、一年さらには十年または二十年という期間は永遠と比較すると何でしょう？
But why should we endure trials at all? Why not just give up?
しかしなぜ私たちは試練を耐え忍ばねばならないのでしょうか？なぜ諦めてしまってはいけないのでしょう？
As Paul teaches us, it is through our trials that we learn to be better followers of Jesus Christ. It is through our trials that we learn to overcome our weaknesses. It is through our trials that we grow in spiritual strength and knowledge.
パウロが教えるように私たちは試練を通して私たちがイエス・キリストのより良い従者になることを学ぶます。また試練を通して自分の弱点を克服することを学び、霊的な力や知識が増し加えられます。
The Prophet Joseph Smith was taught this same principle when he was a prisoner in Liberty jail. Even though he was the prophet, and even though the whole Church depended upon his leadership, he could do nothing to help the Church while he was in prison.
預言者ジョセフ・スミスはリバティーの監獄にいる時にこの同じ原則を教わりました。彼が預言者であり、教会は彼の指導力に頼っていましたが彼は獄中にいたので教会を助けるために何もできませんでした。
He took his trials to the Lord and asked for relief from them. In Section 122 of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord’s answer to Joseph is recorded. The Lord told Joseph, just as he told Paul, that our sufferings here in this life are really very short and that the end result will be great and eternal blessings.
彼は試練を主に委ね、それらを軽くしてくださるよう求めました。教義と聖約 122 章には、ヨセフに対する主の答えが記録されています。主はジョセフにパウロに言われたように、この世での苦しみはとても短く、大いなる永遠の祝福をもたらしてくれるものだと言われました。
Both Joseph Smith and Paul were taught that it was through suffering, through trials, through hardships, that they would be worthy of a “far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory”.
ジョセフ・スミスとパウロは、共に苦しみや試練、困難を乗り越えて「永遠の重い栄光を、あふれるばかりに」得るにふさわしくなれると教えられました。
It is doubtful that any of us will ever have the same amount of trials and persecutions as Paul did or as the Prophet Joseph Smith did. But even our own small trials often seem very painful to us.
パウロや預言者ジョセフ・スミスが受けたと同じ量の試練と迫害は私たちが受けることは無いと思います。しかし私たちの小さな試練でさえ非常に苦痛を感じることがよくあります。
While each trial is difficult while it is being endured, at some point we will look back on that trial and realize that it was really a blessing. We will realize that the trial helped us draw closer to the Savior. We will realize that the trial increased our faith.
試練を耐えている間は辛いものですが、いつの日かその試練を振り返り、それが大きな祝福であったことに気づくでしょう。私たちは試練が救い主により近づく助けになったと分かるでしょう。その試練が私たちの信仰を強めてくれたことを悟るでしょう。
The promise to the Prophet Joseph Smith and to Paul is the same promise that the Lord gives to us.
預言者ジョセフ・スミスとパウロへの約束は、主が私たちにも与えられた約束と同じです。
Yes, we will all have many trials, troubles, and suffering in this life. But, in the end, we will realize that those trials were “but for a moment” and that by enduring the trials with faith in the Lord, we too will become worthy of a “far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory”.
そうです、私たちは誰もがこの世で多くの試練や苦難、苦しみを経験します。けれども最終的に私たちはそれらの試練が「しばらくの間」であり、主への信仰を持って試練に忍耐するとき「永遠の重い栄光を、あふれるばかりに得る」にふさわしくなれることを悟るのです。
Let’s look to the Lord in all our trials. Let’s put our faith in our Savior, that he will bless us and help us through all of our trials. Let’s be worthy of “an eternal weight of glory”.
すべての試練に主の御心を仰ぎ見ましょう。すべての試練を通して主が私たちを祝福し助けてくださるという信仰を持ちましょう。「永遠の重い栄光を」受けるにふさわしくありましょう。
