Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Jeremiah 1:5
The book of Jeremiah is filled with sadness, with despair, and with grief. Jeremiah, one of the greatest of the Old Testament prophets, lived in a time when Israel had completely rejected the Lord. Because of their sins, the Lord withheld the blessings that they needed.
エレミヤ書は悲しみと絶望、心痛に満ちています。旧約聖書の最も偉大な預言者の一人であるエレミヤは、イスラエルが主を完全に拒んだ時代に生きていました。主は彼らの罪のために、彼らが必要としていた祝福を差し控えられました。
Jeremiah writes about many tragic things that will come to Israel. He tells the people that it is because of their wickedness and disobedience. He pleads with them to repent, but they reject him and put him in prison.
エレミヤは、イスラエルに起こる多くの悲劇について書いています。それは彼らの邪悪さと不従順のためだと述べています。彼らに悔い改めを熱心に勧めますが、彼らは拒み、彼を獄に入れました。
As a result of their wickedness, the Lord allowed the armies of Babylon to conquer Israel. The people were taken into captivity in Babylon and became slaves.
彼らの悪行の結果、主はバビロンの軍隊がイスラエルを征服することを許されました。人々はバビロンに連れて行かれ、奴隷となりました。
Jeremiah was the prophet at the time of Lehi and Nephi lived in Jerusalem. We read in The Book of Mormon about the serious problems in Jerusalem. Nephi tells us that the people rejected all of the prophets who were sent to teach them, including Lehi and Jeremiah.
エレミヤはリーハイとニーファイがまだエルサレムに住んでいた頃の預言者でした。私たちはモルモン書でエルサレムの深刻な問題について学んでいます。リーハイとエレミヤなど、人々を教えるために遣わされたすべての預言者を人々が拒んだとニーファイは述べています。
One of the key doctrines taught in this scripture is that this life is not the beginning. We existed before we came to this earth.
この聖句が教える大切な教義のひとつは、私たちは現世が始まりではなく、この地上に来る前から存在していたということです。
When the Lord calls Jeremiah to be a prophet, Jeremiah is taught that he was foreordained to that calling before he was born.
主がエレミヤを預言者として召されたとき、エレミヤは生まれる前にその召しに予任されていたと教えられています。
This doctrine is also taught by Abraham, who was shown in vision the “noble and great ones” who were foreordained to priesthood callings while still in the spirit world. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught this same doctrine, saying that we were foreordained to come to earth at this time to help with the Restoration of the gospel.
この教義はアブラハムによっても教えられています。アブラハムは、まだ霊界にいる間に神権の召しに予任された「高潔で大いなる者たち」を示現で見ました。預言者ジョセフ・スミスはこれと同じ教義を教え，私たちは福音の回復を助けるためにこの時期に地上に来るよう予任されていたと述べました。
We were all in attendance at that great Grand Council in heaven. We were there when the Savior, the Prophet Joseph Smith, Adam, Moses, Isaiah, and many, many others were called and foreordained to fulfill important responsibilities on this earth.
私たちは皆、天上の大会議に出席していました。救い主や預言者ジョセフ・スミス，アダム，モーセ，イザヤ，その他多くの人々が召され，この地上で重要な責任を果たすよう予任されたとき、私たちもそこにいました。
I am sure that we too were foreordained to receive important assignments. We were promised great blessings, based upon our obedience.
私たちも重要な任務を受けるよう予任されていたと確信しています。私たちの従順さに基づいて、大きな祝福が約束されました。
Foreordination is not pre-destination. Foreordination is based upon our own individual faithfulness and obedience. If we keep the commandments and follow our Savior Jesus Christ, we will receive all the blessings that were promised to us before we came to earth.
前世での予任は運命とは違います。予任は、私たち自身の忠実さと従順さに基づいています。戒めを守り，救い主イエス・キリストに従うなら，地上に来る前に約束されていたすべての祝福を享受することができます。
How do we know what we were foreordained to do?
何をするように予任されていたのか、どうしたら分かるでしょうか？
As we keep the commandments, as we study the scriptures, as we serve in our callings, the Holy Ghost will help us to understand what we should do. The Holy Ghost will “bring all things to our remembrance”. If we listen to the still small voice of the Holy Ghost, we will be given direction and knowledge to help us on our journey here on this earth.
戒めを守り，聖文を研究し，召しに従って奉仕するとき，聖霊は私たちが何をすべきか理解できるよう助けてくれます。聖霊は「すべてのことを思い出させてくれ」ます。聖霊の静かな小さな声に耳を傾けるなら，この地上で過ごす上で助けとなる導きと知識が与えられます。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember that this earth life is but a small portion of our eternal existence. Let’s remember that we lived with the other “noble and great” spirits before we came to earth. Let’s remember that we too were foreordained to accomplish many things during our time on earth. Let’s seek for the guidance of the Holy Ghost to help us stay on the covenant path.
新しい週が始まります。この地上での生活は私たちの永遠の存在のほんの一部であることを心に留めて過ごしましょう。私たちが地上に来る前に、「高潔で大いなる」霊たちと一緒に住んでいたことを忘れないでください。私たちも地上にいる間に多くのことを成し遂げるよう予任されていたことを覚えていましょう。聖霊の導きを求めて聖約の道を歩み続けられますように。
