Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord; And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.  3 Nephi 25:5-6

Toward the close of his ministry to the Nephites, the Savior says, “Behold, other scriptures I would that ye should write, that ye have not” (3 Nephi 23:6).  These scriptures were ones that were given to Israel long after Lehi and his family had left Jerusalem.  These scriptures are so important that the Lord wanted the Nephites to have them as well.

One of the key topics contained in these scriptures is Temple and Family History work.

It is very interesting that this particular scripture is the only one found in all four standard works of the Church.

It is included in the Bible, in the Book of Malachi.  It is included in the Book of Mormon, in 3 Nephi.  It is included in the Doctrine & Covenants, in Section 2 (which was actually the very first commandment, since Section 1 was given much later).  It is included in the Pearl of Great Price, in Joseph Smith’s account of the visit of Moroni.

The fact that it is included in all four standard works attests to its importance.  Why is it so important?

We are taught in the scriptures that this world was created for the purpose of giving us a place to come to experience mortality.  We came here to gain a physical body and to be tried and tested.  We have the opportunity to show our faith in our Savior by keeping his commandments here during our mortal existence.

この世界は、私たちに死すべき世を経験する場所を与えることを目的として作られたと聖句は教えています。 私たちは肉体を得、試され、テストされるためにここに来ました。私たちは、死すべき世にいる間、主の戒めを守ることによって救い主への信仰を示す機会があります。

The second important reason for the creation of this earth is for temple work.  There are many ordinances that are necessary for our eternal salvation that can only be received in the Holy Temples.  If we are to receive all the blessings that the Father wants to give to us, we must receive all the ordinances upon which those blessings are predicated.

この地球を創造した2つ目の重要な理由は神殿での業です。神聖な神殿でのみ受けることができる、私たちの永遠の救いに必要な多くの儀式があります。天父が私たちに与えたいと望んでおられるすべての祝福を受けるためには、それらの祝福の前提となるすべての儀式を受けなければなりません。

Living in this Dispensation of the Fullness of Times, we have a duty and a responsibility to make the ordinances of salvation available to those who have gone before us, those who lived in times when the ordinances of the temple were not available.

We are the “children” who must turn our hearts to the fathers.  We must find their names and take those names to the temple.  We must do all that we can do to help those of our ancestors receive the ordinances and blessings of the temple.  The great work of this dispensation is that of Family History and Temple Work.  During this time when we cannot attend the temple, we can use that time to find more names that need the ordinances of the temple.

Many, many of our ancestors are waiting impatiently for us to do the work that they need.  They will help us.  They will guide us.  They know much better than we do how important those temple ordinances are.  They know they cannot move forward without them.  They know that they must wait for us to do our part to fulfil the “promises made to the fathers”.

As we go through this week, let’s remember the great eternal importance of Family History and Temple Work.  Let’s remember the millions of people who are anxiously waiting for the ordinances to be done on their behalf.  Let’s remember that we are the only ones that can help them move forward in their eternal progression.  Let’s remember that, if we fail to do our part, the “whole earth will be smitten with a curse”.
