わたしは柔和で心のへりくだった者であるから、わたしのくびきを負うて、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたの魂に休みが与えられるであろう。わたしのくびきは負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからである。マタイによる福音書11:29~30

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.  Matthew 11:29-30

In this scripture from the New Testament, the Lord invites us to “take his yoke upon us”.  What does that mean?

新約聖書にあるこの聖句で、主がわたしたちに「主のくびきを負うよう」招いておられます。それはどういった意味でしょう。

First of all, what is a “yoke”?   A yoke is a curved piece of wood that is placed over the shoulders of oxen.  It is used to help the oxen work together.  By using a yoke, the oxen can pull a heavy cart.

まず「くびき」とは何でしょう？くびきは牛の肩にのせる湾曲した木片で、これによって牛同士が一緒に働けるようにするのです。くびきを使うことで牛はより重い荷車を引くことが出来るのです。

Because a yoke has to be strong, it is also heavy.  If the driver is not kind, the yoke will rub on the skin of the oxen.   Over time, the yoke rubs the skin of the oxen so much that they start to bleed.  A yoke can be very painful to the oxen.

くびきは丈夫でなければならないため、とても重いのです。もし操縦者が牛を十分気遣わないと、くびきが牛の皮膚を擦りつけ、そしてそれが続くと出血してしまいます。くびきは牛にとってとても痛いものになってしまいます。

In this scripture, the Lord asks us to take his yoke upon us.  He tells us that his yoke is easy and his burden is light.

この聖句で主は私たちに主のくびきを負うよう言われています。主のくびきは負いやすくその荷は軽いと言われています。

This reminds us that we are here on this earth to work.  Even in the gospel, we are expected to labor and to work.  This is represented by the image of the yoke.  As we take his yoke upon us and work as a team with others, we are able to accomplish much good.  

またこの聖句は私たちがこの地上にいるのは働くためだということに気づかせてくれます。福音の教えでも私たちは労働し働くことを期待されています。これはくびきの意味を表しています。私たちが主のくびきを負いチームで働くとき、よりよい事を成し遂げれるのです。

Just as with the oxen, the “yoke” of service helps us to work with others to do hard things, to pull a heavy cart.  

牛と同じように、奉仕の「くびき」はより難しいことを他の誰かと行なう助けとなります。そして重い荷車を引くことが出来るのです。

But some of us don’t want to do the hard work.  We don’t want to pull the cart.  Instead, we want to ride in the cart.

しかし私たちの中には辛い労働を嫌がる人がいます。荷車を引きたくなく、代わりに荷車に乗りたいと思ったりします。

That is not what this scripture teaches us.  

それはこの聖句が教えることではありません。

We all have responsibilities in this life.  We all have callings.  We all have opportunities to serve others.  We all have duties.

私たちは皆、この世にあって責任を持っています。召しを受けており、他の誰かに仕える機会があります。義務を持っています。

We need to follow the counsel of the Lord and take on us the yoke of service.  Unlike the heavy wooden yoke for oxen, the Lord’s yoke is light.  

私たちは主の勧告に従い奉仕のくびきを負う必要があります。牛の重いくびきとは違い、主のくびきは軽いのです。

We are promised that, if we serve faithfully, we will “find rest unto our souls”.  If we do the work that we were sent here to do, we will be able to live with Heavenly Father again.

私たちはもし忠実に尽くすならば「あなたがたの魂に休みが与えられる」という約束を受けています。もしこの世に来た目的を遂行するなら天父と共に再び暮らすことが出来るのです。

Let’s try harder this week to take the yoke of the Lord upon us.  Let’s try harder to fulfill our duties and responsibilities.  Let’s be more willing to serve others, more willing to serve in our callings, more willing to take upon us the burdens of life.

今週、より努力して主のくびきを負ってみましょう。私たちの義務と責任をより努力して果たしましょう。もっと他の誰かのために尽くしたい、受けた召しをより務めたい、人生の重荷をもっと背負いたいという意欲と決意を持ちましょう。

I know that as we do these things, we will be able to “find rest for our souls”.  It is only by hard work and great effort in this life that we can earn the blessings that we need.  It is only by hard work and great effort in this life that we can earn a place in Heaven in the next life.  I know that we can do this!

それを行なうとき「わたしたちの魂に休みが与えられる」ことを私は知っています。私たちが必要な祝福を受けれるのは、この世での勤勉と大きな努力の結果によるのです。次の世で天に場所を受けれるのはこの世での勤勉と大きな努力の結果によるのです。私たちはそれが出来ることを知っています。
