ところで、あなたの兄たちは、わたしの求めていることが難しいと言って、つぶやいている。しかし、わたしが彼らにそれを求めたのでは決してない。それは主の命令なのだ。ニーファイ第一書３：５
And now, behold thy brothers murmur, saying it is a hard thing which I have required of them; but behold I have not required it of them, but it is a commandment of the Lord. 1 Nephi 3:5
This scripture was given by Lehi, when he explained to his son, Nephi, that the Lord had commanded Lehi to send his sons back to Jerusalem to get the Brass Plates from Laban.
この聖句はリーハイが息子ニーファイに主が息子たちをエルサレムに送りレーバンから真鍮版を取ってくるよう命じられたことを説明しているとき与えられました。
We are all very familiar with Nephi’s righteous response, saying that he would do the things that the Lord commanded. It is perhaps one of the most well-known verses in all the scriptures.
私たちもニーファイの主が命じられたことを行って行うという義にかなった対応をよく知っています。これはおそらく全ての聖句の中で最も知られたものかもしれません。
But we sometimes overlook what the commandment was.
しかし私たちは時々戒めが何なのか見逃してしまいます。
One of the key phrases in verse 5 is “a hard thing”. Nephi’s brothers complained that it was a hard thing that they were asked to do.
5節に大切な言葉があります。それは「難しいこと」です。ニーファイの兄弟は依頼されたことは難しいことだと文句を言いました。
Lehi tells his sons that it was a hard thing, but it was the Lord that required it.
リーハイは息子たちにそれは難しいことだが主が望んでおられることだと説明しました。
Because of the faithfulness of Nephi, the boys were able to keep the commandment of the Lord and obtained the Brass Plates. That “hard thing” was a very important assignment. Without the Brass Plates, we might not have The Book of Mormon today.
ニーファイの忠実さによって息子たちは主の戒めを守り真鍮版を手に入れることが出来たのです。その「難しいこと」はとても大切な務めでした。その真鍮版が無ければ私たちには今日モルモン書は無いでしょう。
Each of us, at various times in our lives, are required to do “hard things”.
私たちの誰もが人生の色んな局面で「難しいこと」をする必要があります。
This has been the pattern since the very beginning. Adam and Eve had an easy life in the Garden of Eden. They could have stayed there forever. But in order for the great Plan of Salvation to work, they had to do a hard thing. They had to leave the life of ease in the Garden of Eden and go out into the lone and dreary world.
これは世の初めから変わらないことです。アダムとイブはエデンの園で楽な生活をしていました。彼らは永遠にそこにいることも出来ました。しかし偉大な救いの計画のためには彼らは難しいことを行う必要がありました。彼らはエデンの園での楽な暮らしを離れ、孤独で荒涼とした世界へと出て行かねばなりませんでした。
モーセも難しいことをしなければなりませんでした。彼はイスラエルの民を40年の間、砂漠の中で導かねばなりませんでした。ノアも難しいことを行わねばなりませんでした。彼は洪水から命を守るために箱舟を作らねばなりませんでした。ジョセフ・スミスも難しいことをしなければなりませんでした。彼はモルモン書を翻訳し、神権の鍵を回復し、最後の神権時代を開始したのです。
The ultimate hard thing was done by our Savior Jesus Christ. It is only through his great Atonement that we have hope that someday our hard things will end.
究極の難しいことは救い主イエス・キリストによってなされました。偉大な贖いを通してのみ私たちはいつの日か難しいことが終わりに来るという希望を持つことが出来るのです。
In our own lives, our own “hard things” may not be big things. But we all have some hard things to do.
私たちの生活で経験する「難しいこと」はそれほど大きなことではないかもしれません。しかし私たちは誰もが何かしら難しいことをしなければなりません。
Our own hard things may be making time every day to read The Book of Mormon. Our own hard things may be serving in a calling that is difficult for us. Our own hard thing may be ministering to those around us. Our own hard thing may be standing up for the truth even when it is not popular.
私たちにとって難しいこととは毎日モルモン書を読む時間を作ることかもしれません。楽ではない召しを行うことかもしれませんし、周りの人々にミニスタリングしたり、それほど一般的に受け入れられていないときでも真理のために立ち上がることかもしれません。
Our own hard things may be health issues. Our own hard things may be employment problems. Our own hard things may be wayward children.
また難しいことが健康の問題であったり、雇用問題、わがままな子供の問題だったりするかもしれません。
Whatever our own hard things are, those hard things are just part of the test of this life. Without hard things, we cannot grow. Without hard things, we cannot improve. Without hard things, we cannot increase our faith.
私たちの難しいことが何であれ、それはこの人生で受けるテストの一部なのです。難しいこと無くして私たちは成長できません。難しいこと無くして私たちは進歩しませんし、私たちの信仰も増しません。
As hard things come into our lives, let’s use them to strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ. Let’s keep an eternal perspective on our hard things, remembering that someday, the hard things will end. Let’s use our own hard things to become better followers of Jesus Christ.
難しいことを生活の中で経験する時、私たちのイエス・キリストへの信仰を強めるためにその機会を利用しましょう。難しいことを永遠の見地で見つめ、いつの日かそれが終わりに来ることも覚えていましょう。イエス・キリストのより良い従者となるよう難しいことを役に立てましょう。
