イエスは言われた、「『心をつくし、精神をつくし、思いをつくして、主なるあなたの神を愛せよ』。これがいちばん大切な、第一のいましめである。第二もこれと同様である、『自分を愛するようにあなたの隣人を愛せよ』。これらの二つのいましめに、律法全体と預言者とが、かかっている。」マタイ２２：３７－４０

And Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and will all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.  Matthew 22:37-40

In this scripture, Jesus teaches us about the most important commandments.  A man asked Jesus, “which is the most important commandment”.  This scripture is the answer Jesus gave.

この聖句でイエス様は最も大切な戒めについて教えておられます。ある人がイエスに「どれが一番大切な戒めですか」と尋ねました。この聖句がイエス様がくださった答えです。

Jesus taught us that the most important commandment is to love God.  

イエス様は最も大切な戒めは神を愛することだと教えられました。

We are not just to say that we love God.  We are not just to think that loving God is a good thing.  We are not just to try to love God.

私たちはただ神を愛していると言うだけではいけません。神を愛することはよいことだと考えるだけだったり、ただ神を愛そうとするだけではいけません。

We are to love God “with all our heart, and with all our soul, and with all our mind”.  This is a very strong meaning.  We are to love God more than anything else.

私たちは「心をつくし、精神をつくし、思いをつくして」神を愛するべきなのです。これにはとても強い意味があります。私たちは何者にもまして神を愛するべきなのです。

How do we do this?

どのようにそうするのでしょう？

We love God first of all by keeping his commandments.  We have been taught “If ye love me, keep my commandments”.  If we do not keep the commandments, how can we love God?

私たちはまず戒めを守ることで神を愛します。私たちは「私を愛するならば私の戒めを守りなさい」と教えられています。戒めを守らずにどうして神を愛せるでしょうか？

We also love God by serving those around us.  Every day, we have opportunities to serve others.

私たちは周りの人々に仕えることで神を愛します。毎日、私たちには他の誰かに仕える機会があります。

This is the second great commandment.  Jesus taught us that we should “love our neighbor as ourselves”.  

それは二つ目のとても大切な戒めです。私たちは「自分と同じように隣人を愛しなさい」とイエス様は教えられました。

There are no restrictions placed on this commandment.  Jesus did not say, “love those who are nice to you”.  He did not say “love those who you like”.  He did not say “love people that you know”.

この戒めには制限などありません。イエス様は「自分に親切なものを愛しなさい」とは言われませんでした。また「あなたが好意を持っているものを愛しなさい」とも、「あなたが知っているものを愛しなさい」とも言われませんでした。

Jesus commanded us to love everyone.  

イエス様はすべての人を愛するように戒められました。

We are to love those that are nice to us.  We are to love those that do not like us.  We are to love those who make problems for us.  We are to love those that are different from us.  We are to love those that do bad things.

私たちは自分に親切にしてくれるものを愛するのはもちろんですが、自分たちに好意を持っていないものをも愛するべきです。私たちは自分たちを困らせるものや、自分たちとは違うものをも愛するべきです。また私たちは悪いことをするものをも愛するべきなのです。

This seems like a simple thing to do.  But it can be very hard for us to love someone who is mean to us, or who doesn’t like us, or who does bad things.  

これをするのは簡単そうに見えます。しかし自分たちに失礼な人や自分たちに好意を持っていない人、悪いことをする人を愛するのはとても難しいです。

Their bad behavior does not mean that we do not have to obey this commandment.  If we fail to love them, then we are the one who is committing sin.  

彼らの悪い振る舞いはこの戒めに従う必要がないという口実にはなりません。もしそのような彼らを愛することが出来なければ私たちは罪を犯すものになるのです。

May we all work hard this week to keep these two important commandments.  May we always remember the teachings of Jesus Christ.  May we work to improve our own ability to love others.  May we try to become more like our Savior.

今週もこの二つの大切な戒めを守るよう一生懸命頑張りましょう。イエス・キリストのこの教えをいつも覚えるようにしましょう。他の誰かを愛する能力を改善し成長するよう努力しましょう。より救い主に近いものになれるよう努力しましょう。

I know that if we keep these two commandments, we will be greatly blessed.  I know that we all need to improve our ability to love others.  I know that this is what the Lord wants us to do.

私はこれらの二つの戒めを守るなら大いに祝福されると知っています。私たちは全員他の誰かを愛する能力を改善し成長する必要があると知っています。
