そして、わたしたちが意気消沈して、まさに引き返そうとしたときに、見よ、主はわたしたちを慰め、「あなたがたの同胞であるレーマン人の中に行き、忍耐して苦難に耐えなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたに成功を得させよう。」と言われた。アルマ書２６：２７

Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success.  Alma 26:27

This scripture was given to the sons of Mosiah as they began their missionary work among the Lamanites.  The Nephites thought that it would be a waste of time to try to teach the gospel to the Lamanites.  The Lamanites had rejected all previous attempts to teach them the gospel.

この聖句はモーサヤの息子たちがニーファイ人の中で伝道を始めたときの話です。ニーファイ人はレーマン人に福音を教えることなど時間の無駄だと考えていました。以前にも福音を教えようと試みましたがレーマン人はどれも拒絶しました。

But the sons of Mosiah were dedicated missionaries.  They wanted to teach the gospel to everyone, even to the Lamanites.  

モーサヤの息子たちは献身的で熱心な宣教師でした。ですからすべての人に福音を伝えたいと望んでいました。もちろんレーマン人も例外ではありませんでした。

We know that, by the end of their missions, they had accomplished great things.  Hundreds, or even thousands, of the Lamanites had accepted the gospel and had become righteous people.

彼らは伝道の終わりには偉大な成功を遂げていた事を私は知っています。何百、いや何千人ものレーマン人が福音を受け入れ正しい民となったのです。

But when they began their work, they did not know what the result would be.  From this scripture, we know that it must have been very hard for them in the beginning.  The scripture says that their “hearts were depressed”.   They were “about to turn back”.

しかし彼らが伝道を始めたころはどの様な結果になるものかわかりませんでした。この聖句からわかるのは伝道当初は非常に困難だったということです。聖句の言葉によれば『意気消沈していた』のです。そして『まさに引き返そう』としていたのです。

It must have been a difficult time for them.  Even though they knew that it was important to serve their missions, they could have given up.  They could have decided that it was too hard.  They could have decided that there would be no success.

彼らにとって艱難な時期だった事でしょう。宣教師の召しを務める事が大切だとわかっていましたが諦める事もできた筈です。状況は酷すぎると決めつけ、成功などあり得ないと決めつける事もできました。

In our own lives, we sometimes have times when our own “hearts are depressed” and we want to “turn back”. 

私たちの人生においても『意気消沈』し、『引き返そう』と思うことがあります。

We all have trials and difficulties in this life.  Our challenges may be from poor health, or unemployment, or the death of a loved one, or a child who strays from the gospel, or from many other situations.  

私たちはこの世において間違いなく試練や艱難を経験します。私達の挑戦(チャレンジ)には健康を害したり、失業、愛する人を亡くし、子供が福音から離れたり、他にも多くの状況があるでしょう。

When trials come, do we become depressed?  Do we become frustrated and want to give up?  Do we become angry and complain about how bad our trial is?

試練がやって来ると意気消沈しますか？イライラし諦めたいですか？自分の試練がこんなにも酷いと怒り、不平不満を漏らしますか？

In the April 2007 General Conference, Elder Holland said “no misfortune is so bad that it complaining about it won’t make it worse”. 

2007年の総大会でホーランド長老が「不平を言うことほど人を不幸にするものはない」と話されました。

When these trials come, we need to remember the example of the sons of Mosiah.  We need to “bear with patience thine afflictions”.  We need to keep going forward, one day at a time.

試練がやって来る時、モーサヤの息子の模範を見習う必要があります。「忍耐して苦難を耐え忍ぶ」必要があります。毎日一歩づつ前進し続ける必要があります。

We need to look at the many blessings that we have received instead of at the temporary trials that we must face.  We know that we will grow as we pass through trials.  It will be hard, but the Lord has promised us that he will “give unto you success”.  

私たちが直面する一過性の試練にではなく、かわりに現在受けている多くの祝福に目をやる必要があります。私たちは試練を通過することで成長すると知っています。それが困難であっても主は「あなたに成功を得させる」と約束されています。

That success may not come today, or tomorrow, or next month, or even next year.  But it will come in the Lord’s own time.  

その成功は今日や明日、来月、もしかして来年にも来ないかもしれません。それでも必ず「主の時」にやってきます。

As we humbly follow the example of the sons of Mosiah, as we bear our trials with patience, as we go forward with faith, we will gain all the promised blessings.

モーサヤの息子たちの模範に謙遜に従い、忍耐を持って試練に耐え、信仰を持って前進するときにその約束されたすべての祝福を受けるのです。

Let’s try hard this week to be like the sons of Mosiah.  Let’s try harder to bear our trials with patience and with faith.  Let’s follow Elder Holland’s counsel and stop complaining.  

今週モーサヤの息子たちの模範を見習えるよう頑張りましょう。忍耐と信仰を持って自分の抱える試練を耐え忍ぶ努力をしましょう。ホーランド長老の勧告に従い不平不満を言うのを止めましょう。

I know that the Lord’s promised blessings will come to us as we keep his commandments.  I know that he will strengthen us in our trials.  I know that he will “give unto you success”.

主の約束された祝福は私たちが主の戒めを守ることによりやってくると私は知っています。主は私たちを試練の中で強めてくださると知っています。主は「わたしたちに成功を得させて」くださることを知っています。
