I beheld that the faithful elders of this dispensation, when they depart from mortal life, continue their labors in preaching the gospel of repentance and redemption, through the sacrifice of the Only Begotten Son of God, among those who are in darkness and under the bondage of sin in the great world of the spirits of the dead. The dead who repent will be redeemed, through obedience to the ordinances of the house of God. And after they had paid the penalty of their transgressions, and are washed clean, shall receive a reward according to their works, for they are heirs of salvation.
Doctrine & Covenants 138:57-59
Section 138 of the Doctrine and Covenants contains an account of a wonderful vision given to President Joseph F. Smith, Hyrum Smith’s son, in 1918. In this vision, President Smith was shown the great missionary work that is being done in the spirit world.
教義と聖約138章には、1918年にハイラム・スミスの息子であるジョセフ・F・スミス大管長に与えられた素晴しい啓示が記録されています。この啓示で、スミス大管長は霊界で行われている素晴しい伝道活動を見ました。
A few months prior to this vision, one of President Smith’s sons died. Even though his son was serving as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles at the time of his death, President Smith was devastated by this loss. He prayed and ponder to understand why his son had been taken at such a young age.
この啓示を受ける数か月前、十二使徒定員会の会員を務めていたスミス大管長のひとりの息子が亡くなりました。その時、スミス大管長は息子の喪失に打ちのめされました。彼は息子がなぜこんなに若い時に連れて行かれたのか理解するために祈り、熟考しました。
In response to President Smith’s prayers, a glorious and wonderful vision was given to him. This vision was recorded on October 3, 1918, just one month prior to President Smith’s own death.
スミス大管長の祈りが答えられ、輝かしく素晴らしい啓示が与えられました。この啓示は、スミス大管長自身が亡くなるちょうど1か月前の1918年10月3日に記録されました。
In this vision, President Smith was shown the many righteous spirits that were assembled in the spirit world, waiting for the Savior to appear. President Smith learned that during the three days that the Savior’s body was in the tomb, the Savior went to the spirit world and opened the great missionary work there.
この啓示では、スミス大管長は、霊界に集まった多くの義人の霊を見ました。彼らは救い主の現れを待っていました。スミス大管長は、救い主の遺体が墓に横たわっていた３日間に、救い主が霊界に行かれ、そこですばらしい伝道活動を始められたことを知りました。
In the spirit world were many of the ancient prophets who had already lived on the earth, from Adam down to Malachi. There were also many righteous spirits, including Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, and Wilford Woodruff, who were waiting for their appointed time to come down to earth.
霊界には、アダムからマラキまで、すでに地上に住んでいた多くの古代の預言者がいました。ジョセフ・スミス、ブリガム・ヤング、ジョン・テイラー、ウィルフォード・ウッドラフなど、定められた時に地上に降りてくるのを待っていた多くの義人の霊もいました。
President Smith learned about the great love Heavenly Father has for all of his children on both sides of the veil. The great missionary program in the spirit world gives those individuals who did not have an opportunity to hear the gospel on earth an opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ and the Plan of Salvation.
スミス大管長は、天父が幕の両側にいるすべての子供たちに対して抱いておられる大きな愛について学びました。霊界でのすばらしい宣教師プログラムは、地上で福音を聞く機会がなかった人々に、イエス・キリストと救いの計画について学ぶ機会を提供します。
President Smith saw that those individuals who accept the gospel in the spirit world can be redeemed by the temple ordinances performed here on earth on their behalf.

That is the great responsibility that the Lord has given to us. It is our duty to search out our own ancestors and to complete the ordinances in the temple for them. That is the only way that they can be saved. It is the only way that we can be saved.

This great vision shows that Heavenly Father loves all his children. It shows that everyone must have an equal chance to hear the gospel. It shows that our duty is to perform temple ordinances on behalf of those who accept the gospel in the spirit world.
このすばらしい啓示は、天父がすべての子供たちを愛していることを示しています。それは、誰もが福音を聞く平等な機会を持たなければならないことを示しています。それは、霊界で福音を受け入れる人々に代わって神殿の儀式を行うことが私たちの義務であることを示しています。
It also shows why men and women are sometimes called to go to the spirit world sooner than expected. There is a great need for missionaries there.
また、人が思いのほか早く霊界に召されることがある理由も示しています。そこでは宣教師が大いに必要とされています。
As we go through this next week, let’s ponder on the gospel principles revealed in the great vision. Let’s remember that Heavenly Father loves all his children and has prepared a way for everyone to have an equal chance to hear the gospel. Most importantly, let’s remember that it is our duty and responsibility to make sure that the ordinances of the temple are completed for all of our ancestors.
