だから、愛する兄弟たちよ、堅くたって動かされず、いつも全力を注いで主のわざに励みなさい。主にあっては、あなたがたの労苦がむだになることはないと、あなたがたは知っているからである。コリント人への第一の手紙１５：５８

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.  1 Corinthians 15:58

In this scripture from the New Testament, Paul teaches us about our duty in this life.

新約聖書のこの聖句で、パウロは私たちがこの世でどのような義務を負っているのか教えています。

In the 15th chapter of 1 Corinthians, Paul talks about the doctrine of the resurrection.  He reminds us that in this life, we will experience trials and difficulties.  Because of this, he says in verse 19, “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable”.  

コリント人への第一の手紙15章で、パウロは復活の教義について述べています。私たちがこの人生で試練や苦難を経験することを思い起こさせています。さらに19節で「もしわたしたちが、この世の生活でキリストにあって単なる望みをいだいているだけだとすれば、わたしたちは、すべての人の中で最もあわれむべき存在となる」と彼は述べています。

He says this to remind us of the certainty of the resurrection.  If there is no resurrection, if this life is all that there is, why should we work hard to serve the Lord?  If this life is all that there is, why should we keep the commandments?  If this life is all that there is, why should we suffer because of our beliefs?

彼はこう述べることで復活が確かであることを私たちに思い起こさせています。もし復活が無ければ、もしこの世がここだけのものであれば、私たちはどうして主に一生懸命仕える必要があるのでしょう。もしこの世がここだけのものであれば、どうして戒めを守る必要があるのでしょう。もしこの人生がここだけのものであれば私たちの信仰のために苦しむ必要があるのでしょうか。

But there is, most assuredly, a resurrection.  This life is not all.  We are eternal beings who want to return and live with Heavenly Father once again.  

しかし復活はもっとも疑うことのない事実なのです。この世はここだけで終わることは無いのです。私たちは天父のもとに戻りたい、そして再び共に暮らしたいと望んでいる永遠の存在なのです。

Paul encourages us to be faithful.  He encourages us to move forward.  He encourages us to serve.

パウロは私たちに忠実であるよう薦めています。前に向かって進み、仕える事を薦めています。

He gives us three important goals.

彼は三つの重要な目標を私たちに提示しています。

First, we are to be “steadfast”.   To be “steadfast” means that we stay on the path.  It means that we are dependable.  It means that we always do right things, even when it is hard.

最初に、私たちは確固として揺らぐことがあってはいけません。確固とは道を反れないという事です。信頼に足る存在であり、難しくても常に正しいことを行なうということです。

Second, he tells us to be “unmoveable”.  Much like “steadfast”, to be immoveable means that we do not give in to temptations.  It means that we always “hold to the iron rod”.  It means that nothing can make us give up.

2番目に、私たちに動かされないよう教えています。「確固」のように動かされないとは誘惑に屈しないということです。私たちは常に「鉄の棒につかまっている」と言うことです。何事も私たちを諦めさせることがないということです。

Finally, Paul tells us that we should be “always abounding in the work of the Lord”.  This means we must serve in our callings.  It means that we must serve others.  It means that we must do our best.  

最後に、パウロは「いつも全力を注いで主のわざに励み」なさいと述べています。つまり自分の召しを果たすと言うことです。他の誰かのために仕え、自分の最善を尽くすと言うことです。

“Abounding” means to have “much” or “many” or “a great amount”.  When we serve, we are to work as hard as we can and to do as much good as we can.

「全力を注ぐ」とは、私たちが誰かに仕える時、できる限り熱心に、また出来る限りの最善を尽くという事です。

The promise from Paul is that, if we do these things, we will receive an eternal reward.  Paul testifies that “your labor is not in vain in the Lord”.  That means that the things we do to serve the Lord will be remembered by the Lord.  Things in this life will all have an end and will have little eternal value.   But our work in the Lord’s kingdom will bless us forever.

パウロは私たちがこれらを行うならば永遠の生命を受けると約束しています。パウロは「主にあってはあなた方の労苦が無駄になることはない」と証ししています。それはどういった意味でしょう？主のためになす事がらは主は忘れることはないと言うことです。この世の事柄はやがて終わりが来ますし、永遠の見地から見ても価値はたいして無いかもしれません。しかし神の王国での私たちの働きは永遠に祝福されることなのです。

Let’s remember these three goals given to us by Paul.  Let’s try harder to be “steadfast” and “unmoveable” in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Let’s try to “abound” in the work of the Lord.  Let’s try harder to remember the reality of the resurrection and our own eternal nature.

パウロの教えた３つの目標を忘れないようにしましょう。イエス・キリストの福音に「堅くたって」「動かされない」よう努めましょう。主の業に「全力を注ぎ」ましょう。復活と自分自身が持っている永遠の特質の真実性を理解し忘れないようにしましょう。
