さて、わたしモロナイはこれらのことについて少々述べたい。信仰とは待ち望んでいながらまだ見ていないものであることを、世の人々に示したい。あなたがたは、自分が見ていないからということで疑ってはならない。信仰が試されてからでなければ、証は得られないからである。エテル１２：６

And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.  Ether 12:6

As Moroni, the son of Mormon, comes to the end of his abridgement of the Jaredite record, he adds his own words of counsel and his testimony.  These words and testimony are included in the 12th chapter of the book of Ether.  Moroni teaches with power and with authority. There are several very well-known scriptures in this chapter.

One topic that Moroni talks about is faith.  Faith is the most basic principles of the gospel.  It is the first of the four basic principles of faith, repentance, baptism by immersion, and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands.

ひとつのトピックは信仰についてです。信仰は福音の最も基本的な原則です。信仰、悔い改め、水に浸めるバプテスマ、そして按手による聖霊の賜物という最初の4つの基本原則です。

Faith can be a difficult principle to understand.  In preaching to the Zoramites, the prophet Alma uses the example of a seed.  He encourages the Zoramites to try an experiment, to plant the seed.  If the seed is good, it will start to sprout.  If it sprouts, you will know that it is a good seed.  

信仰は理解するのが難しい原則です。ゾーラム人に説教する際に、預言者アルマは種のたとえを使っています。彼はゾーラム人に種を蒔くという試みを勧めています。種が良ければ芽が出ます。それが芽生えれば、それが良い種であることを理解するでしょう。

Alma encourages the Zoramites to gain faith by listening to the word of God.  They are then to ponder on the messages they have heard.  If their hearts are touched, then the “seed” of faith is a good seed.  

アルマは、ゾーラム人が神の言葉を聞くことによって信仰を得るように、そして聞いたメッセージについて熟考するように勧めています。彼らが心に感じるものがあれば、その信仰の「種」は良い種なのです。

We can use this same experiment in our own lives.  As we read the scriptures, as we pray, as we listen to or read the messages of General Conference, we too can test the “seed” of faith.  Do we feel touched by the Spirit as we read and ponder those messages?

これと同じ試みを私たちの生活の中で使うことができます。聖典を読んだり、祈ったり、総大会のメッセージを視聴したりするとき、私たちも信仰の「種」を試すことができます。それらのメッセージを読んで熟考するとき、私たちの霊に感動を覚えますか？

Moroni reminds us that faith does not come by signs or miracles.  

モロナイは、信仰はしるしや奇跡によってもたらされるのではないことを教えています。

By its very nature, faith means that we believe in something that we have not yet seen.  

その性質上、信仰とは、私たちがまだ見たことのない何かを信じることを意味します。

This whole mortal experience is based on faith.  We were told before we came here that we would not be able to remember the things of the spirit world.  We were told that this life would be a time of testing.  We were told that we would be taught true principles, but that it would be our choice whether to accept them or not. 

この死すべき現世での経験すべては信仰に基づいています。ここに来る前に、霊界のことを思い出せないと言われました。この人生は試練の時だと言われました。私たちは真の原則を教えられるだろうと言われましたが、それを受け入れるかどうかは私たちの選択次第です。

As Alma taught the Zormaites, we must first take action.  We must study, ponder, and pray.  We must test the “seed” to see if it is good.  It is only after we have done those things that we begin to develop faith.  

アルマがゾーラム人に教えたように、私たちはまず行動を起こさなければなりません。私たちは学び、熟考し、そして祈らなければなりません。その「種」を試して、それが良いかどうかを確認する必要があります。 それらのことをした後、はじめて私たちの信仰が育ち始めるのです。

Each step we take in the gospel requires us to have faith.  

福音生活を歩む過程で私たちの信仰が必要になります。

It takes faith to want to repent.  It takes faith to want to be baptized.  It takes faith to attend all of our meetings.  It takes faith to accept callings.  It takes faith to move forward even during trials.  It takes faith to endure to the end.

悔い改めたいと思うには信仰が必要です。バプテスマを受けたいと思うには信仰が必要です。教会のすべての集会に出席するには信仰が必要です。召しを受け入れるには信仰が必要です。試練の中でも前進するには信仰が必要です。最後まで耐え忍ぶには信仰が必要です。

As we go through this week, let’s remember Moroni’s promise.  Let’s remember that it is only after we show our faith by making correct choices that we receive the witness of the Spirit.  Let’s remember that we need to take action, to act on our faith, before we can receive that witness.  Let’s remember that faith does not come from great signs or miracles, but as a result of our good choices.  

新しい週が始まります。モロナイの約束を忘れないで過ごしましょう。正しい選択をして信仰を示した後に御霊の証が得られることを忘れないでください。証を得るには、私たちはまず自分の信仰に基づいて行動を起こす必要があることを心にとめてください。信仰は大きなしるしや奇跡からではなく、私たちの良い選択の結果であることを忘れないでください。
