Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. Doctrine & Covenants 135:3
On the 27th day of June, 1944, Joseph Smith, the Prophet of the Lord, was martyred in the jail in Carthage, Illinois. His older brother Hyrum, the Patriarch of the Church, was also martyred with him. Thus, like most of the prophets of old, the Prophet Joseph Smith sealed his testimony with his own blood.

Section 135 was written later by Elder John Taylor of the Council of the Twelve Apostles. It summarized the great work done by the Prophet during his short lifetime.

Joseph Smith was the Prophet of the Restoration. He was chosen of God to open the last dispensation of the gospel, a dispensation in which all things would be restored to the earth. His prayer for answers to questions opened the dispensation with the marvelous First Vision. The First Vision proved to the world that Heavenly Father and his Son, Jesus Christ, are two separate beings, with bodies of flesh and bone.

The First Vision also proved that God does reveal his will to his prophets in this day, just as he did to the ancient prophets. With that grand visitation, the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times began. The restoration started by the Prophet Joseph Smith continues on today, under the same priesthood keys and authority.

Joseph Smith was visited by Moroni, who explained about the ancient Nephite record and told the Prophet about the role he would play in bringing the Book of Mormon to the world. In just 90 days or so, the translation was completed. The Book of Mormon was published to the world and today in available to those who are seeking the truth anywhere in the world.

The Prophet organized the Lord’s Church in April of 1830. From that small beginning of only six members, the Lord’s Church has grown to more than 16 million members. The Church today is truly a world-wide Church, with members in almost every country in the world.
預言者は1830年4月に主の教会を組織しました。わずか6人の会員からなる小さなものでしたが、今や1,600万人以上の会員に成長しました。今日では教会は世界規模の教会であり、世界中のほぼすべての国に会員がいます。
Through Joseph Smith, the keys of the priesthood were restored. Under those keys, temples were built and ordinances performed for the eternal salvation of Heavenly Father’s children, both living and dead.

He organized the work in Kirtland, in Far West, and in Nauvoo. Before the saints left Nauvoo, it was the largest city in the state of Illinois, larger even than Chicago.

Throughout his entire life, from the time of the First Vision until the martyrdom, Satan and his followers did everything they could to stop the work of the Lord. Mobs drove the saints from their homes, political leaders passed laws against the Church, and time after time, the Prophet was taken to jail on false charges.
最初の示現の時から殉教まで、彼の生涯を通して、サタンとサタンに従うものは主の業を止めるためにできる限りのことをしました。暴徒は聖徒を家から追い出し、政治指導者は教会に対して法律を可決し、そして何度も、預言者を虚偽の罪で投獄しました。
To the very end, Joseph remained true to truth, true to his calling, and true to the Lord.

Great is his glory and endless his priesthood, ever and ever the keys he will hold…

As we go through this next week, let’s all remember the debt of gratitude that we owe to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Let’s remember his trials, great difficulties, and sacrifices. Let’s remember that it was through his sacrifices that we can enjoy the wonderful blessings of the gospel today. Let’s remember that Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration and the one man that has done more, except for our Savior Jesus Christ, to make salvation possible for everyone on this earth.
