それでも彼らは、しばしば断食して祈り、ますます謙遜になり、ますますキリストを信じる信仰を確固としたものにしたので、喜びと慰めで満たされ、まことに清められ、心の聖めを受けた。この聖めは、彼らが心を神に従わせたためにうけたのである。　ヒラマン３：３５

Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts to God.   Helaman 3:35

In this scripture, the prophet Helaman teaches us the simple steps we must follow if we want to be happy in this life.

預言者ヒラマンは私たちがこの世で幸せになりたければ、わかりやすい幾つかの方法に従うべきだとこの聖句で教えています。

He tells us that those who follow his teaching can fill “their souls with joy and consolation”.  He does not say that we will never have any trials or hardships in the life.  He does say that we can find happiness and joy, though, even when we have trials.

その教えに従う者は「喜びと慰め」で満たされると述べています。けれども彼は人生の試練や苦難を決して受けないなどとは述べていません。私たちは試練を受けていても幸せや喜びを見出すことが出来ると彼は教えているのです。

First, he teaches us that a key to finding happiness is to “fast and pray oft”.  “Oft” is an old English word meaning “often”.  We have the opportunity to fast and to pray each month for Fast and Testimony meeting.  However, we can fast and pray any time we want to.  As we fast and pray often, we will receive great blessings.

まず最初に、幸福を見出す鍵は「しばしば断食して祈る」ことだと彼は教えています. 私たちは毎月断食証会で断食し祈る機会があります。しかし私たちはいつでも望むときに断食と祈りが出来るのです。しばしば断食して祈るとき私たちは大きな祝福を受けるのです。

Helaman teaches us that we need to grow stronger in our humility.  This seems like a strange idea.  “Humility” is not a character trait that the world values.  The world looks down on humble people.  

ヒラマンは謙遜さを育てなければならないことを教えています。これは何か奇妙な考えに思えます。「謙遜さ」は世の中ではあまり評価されない特質です。一般の世人は謙遜な人を見下す傾向にあります。

But Helaman teaches us to be strong in our humility.  That means we need to be teachable.  We need to listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost.  More importantly, it means that we need to follow those promptings immediately.  It means we should do the things the Lord wants us to do, not what we want to do.

しかしヒラマンは謙遜であるよう教えています。つまり教えを受け入れる準備が出来ており、聖霊の促しに聞き従うべきだということです。しかしもっと重要なのはその促しに「すぐ聞き従う」ことなのです。自分がしたいことではなく主が私たちに望んでおられることを行なうべきだということです。

As we grow stronger in our humility, we will gain greater faith in Jesus Christ.  As we become more humble, we will be more obedient.  As we become more humble, we will want to be more like our Savior.  As we become more humble, we will understand that blessings come only as we keep the commandments.

謙遜さが育ってくると私たちはイエス・キリストへのよりしっかりとした信仰を持つことが出来ます。より謙遜になると私たちはより従順になります。より謙遜になると私たちは更に救い主のようになりたいと思います。より謙遜になると私たちは祝福は戒めを守ることによってのみ享受できることを理解するのです。

Helaman teaches us that as we become stronger in humility and firmer in our faith in Jesus Christ, we will begin to fill our souls “with joy and consolation”.  

私たちがより謙遜になりイエス・キリストへの信仰を堅固にするとき、私たちの心は「喜びと慰め」で満たされはじめるとヒラマンは教えています。

And, as we receive great joy and consolation, our hearts become purified and sanctified.  That means we will become more like our Savior.  It means that we will keep all his commandments.  It means that we will want to serve him.

そして「喜びと慰め」を受けると私たちの心は清められ、心の聖めを受けるのです。つまり私たちはさらに救い主のようになるという意味です。主の全ての戒めを守り、主に仕えたくなるのです。

As we follow the words of Helaman, our hearts will be turned to God.  Like the people in Helaman’s day, we too can receive the blessings of joy and consolation that come as we yield our hearts to God.

ヒラマンの言葉に従うとき、私たちの心は神に向くのです。ヒラマンがいた時代の人々のように私たちも心を神に捧げることで受ける祝福、つまり喜びと慰めを得るのです。

Let’s make an effort this week to be more humble.  Let’s work to increase our faith in Jesus Christ.  If we do this, we will receive the “joy and consolation” that we seek.  Let’s turn our heart to God in all things.

今週、より謙遜になる努力をしましょう。イエス・キリストへの信仰を強めてみましょう。そうするなら私たちが捜し求めている「喜びと慰め」を受けることでしょう。すべてのことにおいて心を神に向けてみましょう。
