さて、わたしがこれらのことを述べても、あなたがたが理解できないとすれば、それはあなたがたが求めもせず、また、門をたたたきもしないためである。それゆえ、あなたがたは光の中に導かれず、闇の中で滅びてしまうに違いない。ニーファイ第二書３２：４
Wherefore, now after I have spoken these words, if ye cannot understand them it will be because ye ask not, neither do ye knock; wherefore, ye are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark. 2 Nephi 32:4
Nephi teaches us an important lesson. He had just given a talk to his people about the mission of Jesus Christ. He had taught them that they must follow the words of Christ. He had taught them how to understand the words of Christ.
ニーファイは大切なレッスンを私たちに教えています。彼はイエスキリストの使命について民に話しました。彼はキリストのみ言葉に従わなければならないこと、またキリストのみ言葉をどうしたら理解できるのか教えました。
At the end of his talk, he tells the people that if they cannot understand his important message, it is because they do not ask.
彼は話の最後で民にこのように言いました。彼の重要なメッセージが理解できなければそれは彼らが尋ね求めないからだと。
One of the most important principles of the gospel is free agency. The Lord will never force us to do anything. We always have the ability to choose what we want to do.
福音の大切な原則のひとつは自由意志です。主は決して私たちを強制して何かをさせることはありません。私たちは常にしたいことを選ぶ能力を持っています。
But with each choice, there is a consequence.
しかし各々の選択には必ず「その結果」が伴います。
This is what Nephi teaches us in this scripture. He taught his people many important gospel principles. There are important things for them to understand. He did his part and completed his assignment.
これがニーファイがこの聖句で教えていることです。彼は民に多くの大切な福音の原則を教えました。彼らが理解しなければならない重要な事柄がありました。彼は自分のなすべきことをし任務を完了しました。
We also have many important teachings given to us. We have the scriptures. We have the General Conference talks.
私たちにも多くの大切な教えが与えられています。聖典があったり総大会のお話があります。
But just reading the scriptures in not enough. Just listening to General Conference is not enough. Nephi teaches us that we need to “understand” the words that have been spoken.
しかし、ただ聖典を読むだけでは十分ではありません。ただ総大会を聞くだけでは十分ではありません。ニーファイは話された言葉を「理解」しなければならないと教えました。
This means that we need to take action. We have a responsibility to find out for ourselves if the doctrine being taught is correct. We must make an effort to learn. We must “ask” and “knock”. We must thoughtfully and prayerfully consider what we have been taught.
それは行動しなければならないと言う意味です。私たちは教えられた教義が正しいのか自分自身で見つける責任があります。学ぶ努力をしなければなりません。尋ね求め、門を叩かなければなりません。教えられた事柄を祈りの気持ちで深く考えねばなりません。
If we do this, we will be able understand the words that have been taught. The Holy Ghost will reveal to us the truthfulness of the words. We will be able to have our own testimony about what has been taught.
そうするならば私たちは教わった言葉を理解することができるでしょう。聖霊がその言葉の真実性を明らかにしてくれ、教えられたことについて自分自身の証を得ることが出来るでしょう。
Listening to General Conference without studying the talks, without praying about them, without “asking” is like just looking at a delicious meal without eating any of it.
総大会のお話しを研究せず、祈らず、「求め」もせず聞くのは、まるでおいしい食事をただ眺めているだけで何も食べないようなものです。
The Lord expects us to do our part. He expects us to think about the things that have been taught and find out for ourselves if they are true. He expects us to take action. He expects us to make an effort.
I know that if we will thoughtfully and prayerfully consider the lessons we learn in the scriptures, in General Conference, and in our meetings and classes, the Holy Ghost will teach us. We will be able to understand and be “brought into the light”. We will not “perish in the dark”.
主は私たちに自分のなすべきことをするように期待しておられます。主は教わったことについて考え、それが真実かどうか自分自身で見つけ出すよう期待しておられます。主は私たちが行動するよう期待しておられます。努力するよう期待しておられます。もし私たちが聖典や総大会、ミーティング、クラスで学んだレッスンを祈りの気持ちで深く考えるならば聖霊が私たちに教えてくれると知っています。私たちは理解ができ、「光の中に導かれる」と知っています。私たちは「闇の中で滅びる」ことはないのです。
It is up to us to make the right choice.
正しい選択をすることは私たち次第なのです。
I know that the Lord will bless us. I know that the Holy Ghost will teach us. I know that we can have our own testimony about the truthfulness of the gospel. But we must ask. We must knock. Then we will be lead into the light.
主は私たちを祝福してくださると知っています。聖霊が私たちに教えてくれると知っています。福音の真実性について自分自身の証を得ることが出来ると知っています。しかし私たちは尋ね求めなければなりません。門を叩かなければなりません。そうすることで私たちは光の中に導かれるのです。
