私は、前もって自分のなすべきことを知らないまま、御霊に導かれて行った。第一ニーファイ４：６

And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do.  1 Nephi  4:6

This well-known scripture from the very first part of the Book of Mormon is often used to teach an important lesson about faith.  But it also has other important messages for us.

この馴染み深い聖句はモルモン書の最初の方に出てきますが信仰について大切なレッスンを教えるのにこの聖句はよく使われます。しかしこれには他にも私たちにとって重要なメッセージが含まれています。

Nephi and his brothers had been given a difficult assignment.  They had been given the assignment to get the Brass Plates from Laban.  

ニーファイと彼の兄弟は難しい任務をもらいました。彼らはレーバンから真鍮版を取ってくるよう依頼されたのです。

Laban was a very rich and powerful man.  But he was also a wicked man and did not want to give the Brass Plates to anyone.  Nephi and his brothers tried twice to get the plates.  The first time, Laman went to the house of Laban and asked Laban for the plates.  Laban was angry and ordered his servants to kill Laman.

レーバンは非常に裕福で権力がありました。しかし彼はとても邪悪でその真鍮版を誰にも渡したくありませんでした。ニーファイと彼の兄弟は真鍮版を得ようと二度挑戦しました。最初はレーマンがレーバンの家に行き真鍮版が欲しいと頼みました。レーバンは怒りレーマンを殺すよう家来たちに命じました。

The second time, Nephi and his brothers tried to buy the plates from Laban.  They took all the gold and silver that they had left behind at their old home and offered it to Laban in exchange for the plates.  Again, Laban was angry and ordered his servants to kill Nephi and his brothers.

二度目はニーファイと彼の兄弟がレーバンから版を買い取ろうと試みました。彼らは後にしてきた住まいから持ってきたすべての金と銀を携えてレーバンのところに行き、版と交換してくれるよう頼みました。レーバンはまたもや怒り家来にニーファイと彼の兄弟を殺すよう命じました。

Laman and Lemuel wanted to give up and go back to their family in the wilderness.  But Nephi refused to give up.  He knew they had been given this assignment by the Lord.

レーマンとレムエルは諦めて荒れ野にいる家族のところに戻りたいと思いました。しかしニーファイは諦めることはしませんでした。彼は主がこの任務を与えられたことを知っていたからです。

He decided to go back into the city alone, to try again to get the plates.  He did not have a plan and did not know what he was going to do.  He says, “And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do”.

彼は一人で街に戻り、もう一度版を手に入れようと決意しました。彼は何か計画があったわけでも何をするともわかっていませんでした。彼は「前もって​自分​の​なす​べき​こと​を​​知らない​まま、御霊​に​​導びかれて​行った」と述べています。

This was a very important assignment.  The Lord knew that the Brass Plates were important not just for Nephi and his family, but for all the future generations of Nephites and Lamanites.  Without the Brass Plates, those people would not know about the commandments of God.

これはとても重要な務めでした。主はその真鍮版はニーファイと彼の家族だけでなく、ニーファイ人やレーマン人の将来の世代にとっても大切なものであることをご存知でした。その真鍮版なしでは、彼らは神の戒めを知ることは不可能でした。

The Lord knew exactly what needed to be done.  He knew all the things that would happen.  He knew that Nephi would be able to get the Brass Plates from Laban.

主は何をすべきかはっきりとご存知でした。起こることもすべてご存知でした。ニーファイがレーバンから真鍮版を得ることが出来るとご存知でした。

The Lord could have explained everything to Nephi in great detail.  “First, go down this particular street.  Laban will be drunk on the street.  Take his sword and kill him.  Put on his clothes.  Go to Laban’s house and find Zoram.  Tell Zoram to get the plates and to follow you.”

主はニーファイにすべて事を詳細に説明することも可能でした。「最初にこの道を進みなさい。レーバンは道端で酒に酔っているので彼の剣を抜いて殺しなさい。彼の服を着てレーバンの家に行きゾーラムを見つけなさい。ゾーラムに版を持って来るよう、そして私に着いて来なさいと言いなさい。」と。

But he did not do that.  The Spirit only gave Nephi what was needed, one step at a time.  Nephi had to be patient.  He had to be obedient.  He had to move forward with faith.

しかし主はそのようにはなさいませんでした。ただ聖霊がニーファイに必要なものを一つずつ与えました。ニーファイは忍耐し従順でなければいけませんでした。彼は信仰をもって進まねばなりませんでした。

It is often the same in our lives.  The Lord knows exactly what we need to do.  He knows the right answer to all of our questions, problems, and trials.  He could give us a complete plan for our lives, telling us everything that we should do, where we should live, what job we should take, and so on.

私たちの人生でも同じことがあります。主は私たちがすべきことを間違いなくご存知です。私たちの抱える疑問や問題、試練に対する正しい答えをすべてご存知です。主は私たちが何をし、どこに住み、どの職に就くなど、私たちの人生のために完璧なプランを与えてくださることは可能です。

But, like Nephi, we are only given direction for one step at a time.  If we are obedient and follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost, we will get additional information at the right time.  If we do not follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost, we will not get additional information.  

しかしニーファイのように私たちは一歩一歩しか指示を受けないのです。もし従順で聖霊のささやきに従うなら私たちは更に必要な情報を一番良い時に受けるのです。聖霊のささやきに従わなければ私たちは更に必要な情報は受けないのです。

We need to be patient in our challenges.  We need to follow the example of Nephi and move forward with faith, one step at a time.  We need to follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost, even when we do not understand what the results will be.  

私たちは問題の中でも忍耐強くなければなりません。ニーファイの模範に従って信仰を持ち一歩一歩前に向かって進まねばなりません。私たちはたとえその結果がどうなるのかわからない時でも聖霊のささやきに従わねばなりません。

I know that the Holy Ghost will always guide us and help us to make correct decisions.  I know that we must follow those promptings with faith.  I know that, like Nephi, we will be able to accomplish the assignments the Lord gives us if we are patient and follow the inspiration give to us.

私は聖霊は常に私たちを導き正しい選択ができるよう助けてくれることを知っています。信仰を持ってそのささやきに従わねばならないことを知っています。もし私たちは忍耐強く、受ける霊感に従うならばニーファイのように主から受けた務めを果たせることを知っています。
