Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12
Paul’s instructions to his missionary companion, Timothy, he gives important instructions. These instructions apply not just to Timothy. They apply to us today.
パウロが宣教師の同僚であったテモテに大切な指示を与えました。これはテモテだけでなく今日の私たちにも当てはまる大切なものです。
Paul lists a number of character traits that he encourages Timothy to develop and to follow. Like Timothy, we are trying to become better followers of Jesus Christ. Like Timothy, we want to do better. Like Timothy, we need to develop these same character traits.
パウロは伸ばし従うべき幾つかの特性をあげ、テモテを励ましています。テモテのように私たちもイエス・キリストのより良い従者となるために努力をしています。テモテのように私たちもより良く事をなしたいと思っています。私たちもテモテのようにこうした特性を伸ばす必要があります。
We know that we need to be good examples to those around us. We need to show our love of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ by our words and actions. In Matthew 5:16, the Lord says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”.
私たちは周りの人に良い模範であるべきだと理解しています。言葉と行いを通して天父とイエス・キリストへの愛を示すべきだと理解しています。マタイによる福音書5章16節で主は「あなたがたの光を人々の前に輝かし、そして、人々があなたがたのよいおこないを見て、天にいますあなたがたの父をあがめるようにしなさい。」と教えておられます。
This is the principle that Paul teaches to Timothy and to us.
これはパウロがテモテと私たちに教えた原則です。
So how do we become a better “example of the believers”?
では私たちはどのようにより良い「信者の模範」となれるでしょう？
The first items that Paul reminds us about are being good examples in our words and in our conversations. Does our language reflect our love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ? Do we use words that are kind and gentle? Do we use our words to help encourage others who may be struggling? Or are our words harsh, critical, or belittling of others?
パウロが最初に私たちに思い起こしているのは言葉や会話において良い模範であることです。貴方が使う言葉は私たちの天父やイエス・キリストへの愛を反映していますか？親切で優しい言葉を使っていますか？苦しんでいる人を励まし助ける言葉を使っていますか？それともきつく批判的で誰かをけなすような言葉を使っていますか？
We have recently been reminded by President Nelson about our duties to minister to others in a higher and holier way. Ministering must be centered on the principle of charity. Paul, Mormon, and Moroni all teach us that charity is “the pure love of Christ” and that “charity never faileth”.

Are we examples of the believers in charity? Do we look for opportunities to serve? Do we pray for guidance to be led to those who need our help? Do we remember that “perfect love casteth out all fear”? (Moroni 8:17)
貴方は慈愛において信者の模範になっていますか？奉仕の機会を探していますか？助けの必要な人に導かれるようお祈りしていますか？「完全な愛はあらゆる恐れを取除く」（モロナイ8:16）ことを覚えていますか？
Are we examples of the believers in spirit and in faith and in purity? Do we attend all of our Church meetings when possible? Do we take the sacrament worthily each week? Do we seek to have the Holy Ghost as our constant companion?
私たちは霊においても信仰においても純潔においても信者の模範になっていますか？可能なかぎり教会のすべての集会に出席していますか？毎週ふさわしく聖餐をとっていますか？聖霊を常に私たちの伴侶とするよう求め努力していますか？
As we strive to keep the commandments, we will improve in our efforts to be good examples of the believers. As we seek to speak words of comfort, words of kindness, words of encouragement, we will improve in our efforts to be good examples of the believers. As we seek to listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and act on those promptings with faith, we will improve in our efforts to be good examples of the believers.
戒めを守ろうと努力するとき信者のよい模範となっていけるのです。私たちが慰めの言葉や親切、励ましの言葉を話すよう努力するとき信者の良い模範となっていけるのです。聖霊のささやきを聞き、信仰を持ってその促しに従って行動するとき、私たちは信者の良い模範となっていけるのです。
Let’s remember our duty this week. Let’s follow the counsel that Paul gives to us. Let’s look for ways to become better examples of the believers.
私たちの義務を覚えて今週も過ごしましょう。パウロが教えた訓戒に従いましょう。信者のより良い模範となる方法を探してみましょう。
