わたしはまた異邦人にたいしても慈愛を抱いている。しかし見よ、これらの人々はだれであっても、キリストの和解を得、狭い門を入って命に至る細い道を歩み、試しの生涯の最後までその道を歩み続けないかぎり、わたしはその人にために何も望むことができない。ニーファイ第二書３３

I also have charity for the Gentiles.  But for none of these can I hope except they shall be reconciled unto Christ, and enter into the narrow gate, and walk in the strait path which leads to life, and continue in the path until the end of the day of probation.  2 Nephi 33:9

At the end of Nephi‘s writings, he gives us these important instructions.  In this scripture, he tells us what we need to do to return to our Heavenly Father.  He teaches us that there are four simple things that we must do.

ニーファイはこの記述の終わりで大切な教えを残しています。彼はこの聖句で私たちが天父のもとに戻るために何が必要かを教えています。それには私たちは易しい四つのことする必要があります。

First of all, and most importantly, we must be “reconciled unto Christ”.  

まず最初でしかも最も大切なことは私たちは「キリストの和解を得」ねばならないと言うことです。

This means that we must accept Jesus Christ as our Savior.  We must learn about his commandments.  We must keep his commandments.  We have all done this first step.

つまりイエス・キリストを私たちの救い主として受け入れるということです。主の戒めを学び、それを守る必要があります。私たちはその最初のステップをすでに行っています。

Second, we must “enter into the narrow gate”.

２番目に私たちは「狭い門を入」らねばなりません。

This means that we must be baptized.  In chapter 31 of Second Nephi, Nephi teaches us that the gate by which we must enter is baptism.  We are to follow the example of Jesus Christ and be baptized.  We have all done this second step.

それはバプテスマを意味します。第２ニーファイ３１章で、ニーファイは私たちが入らねばならない門とはバプテスマであると教えています。私たちはイエス・キリストの模範に従い、バプテスマを受けねばなりません。私たちは皆、この２番目のステップも行なっています。

Third, we must “walk in the strait path which leads to life”.  This means that, after we are baptized, we must continue to keep all the commandments.  We must pray always.  We must study the scriptures each day.  We must serve in our callings.  We must help people who need help.  We are all trying to do this step.

３番目に私たちは「命に至る細い道を歩」まねばなりません。それはバプテスマを受けた後もすべての戒めを守り続けねばならないと言う意味です。私たちは常に祈らねばなりませんし、毎日聖典も学ばねばなりません。私たちの召しを果さねばなりませんし、助けが必要な人の手助けをしなければなりません。私たちはみなこのステップを行なおうと努力しています。

Finally, we must “continue on the path until the end of the day of probation”.  This means that we must continue to do all these things throughout our life.  We do not know how long we will be allowed to stay in this life.  The end may not be for many years, or the end may be just a few hours away.  

最後に私たちは「試しの生涯の最後までその道を歩み続け」なければなりません。つまり私たちは生涯を通してこれらすべての事を行ない続けねばならないということです。私たちはだれもこの世にどれほど留まれるのかわかりません。自分の生涯がいつ終わるのかなど誰にもわかりません。もしかして２，３時間先かも知れません。

The important thing to understand is that these trials and tests only take place in this life.  We are told that this life is the time of testing.  

大切で理解していなければならないことは試練や試しがあるのはこの世にいる時だけだということです。私たちはこの世は試しの時期であると教えられています。

Both Elder Bruce R. McConkie and, more recently, Elder D. Todd Christofferson have taught us that, as long as we are on the” strait and narrow path” when the end of our mortal probation comes, we will be saved in the Kingdom of God.  After death, we no longer have to suffer these trials and temptations.  After death, we have completed our testing time.  We will have “graduated”.

ブルース・R・マッコンキー長老と最近ではタッド・D・クリストファーソン長老は「まっすぐで狭い道」に私たちが留まるかぎり、試しの生涯が終わる時、私たちは神の王国に救われると教えられました。死後、私たちはこれらの試練や試し、誘惑に苦しむことはありません。私たちの試しは終るのです。私たちは「卒業」するのです。

I know that these things are true.  I know that, as hard as this life is, the rewards for keeping the commandments are even greater.  I know that our trials and burdens will all come to an end when our time here on earth is over.  I know that we can return and live with our Heavenly Father and with Jesus Christ.  Jesus Christ has made that possible through his great Atonement.  Now, it is up to us.  We just need to follow the four simple steps that Nephi teaches us.  

私はこれらの事が真実だと知っています。この世が辛ければ辛い分、戒めを守ることから受けるその報いはより大きいと私は知っています。試練や苦難は私たちのこの地上での生活が終わるとき必ず終わることを私は知っています。私たちは天父とイエス・キリストの元に戻り共に住むことができると私は知っています。イエス・キリストが偉大な贖いを通してそれを可能にしてくださいました。後は私たち次第です。私たちはニーファイが教えた四つの易しいステップに従うだけでいいのです。

Let’s go forward with greater faith this week.  Let’s try harder to keep the commandments and to stay on the “strait and narrow path”.  Let’s resolve to continue on that path to the end our life.  

今週も更に強い信仰を持って前進しましょう。もう少し頑張って戒めを守り「狭くて細い道」に留まるようにしましょう。この世の最後までその道に留まリ続けるという決意を持ちましょう。
