まことに主なる神はそのしもである預言者にその隠れた事を示さないでは、何事をもなされない。

Surely the Lord God will do nothing, save he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
Amos 3:7
Our study of the Old Testament now moves into the section often referred to as “the minor prophets”. They are not called “minor” because they were not very good prophets. They are called “minor” because their writings that have come down to us are very short. Some of the minor prophets only wrote one or two pages.
旧約聖書の学習は、「マイナーな預言者」とも呼ばれるセクションに入ります。決して彼らが良い預言者ではなかったので「マイナー」とは呼ばれていたわけではありません。今に伝わる彼らの著作が非常に短いため「マイナー」と呼ばれています。マイナーな預言者の中には、1 ページか 2 ページしか書いていない人もいます。
But even though their writings may be short, they have important messages for us. They teach the same principles as have been taught since the days of Adam. They are just as important to us as Abraham, or Moses, or Isaiah are. We need to study their messages just like we study the messages of the earlier prophets.

These minor prophets lived in a very difficult time. Israel had completely rejected the Lord. Even after being delivered from captivity by the hand of the Lord, they continued on in their wickedness. Israel refused to listen to the prophets that the Lord sent to them. Because of their disobedience and their refusal to keep the commandments, the blessings that they might have received were held back.

The prophet Amos, who was one of these “minor” prophets, teaches us some very important doctrine. Although he only wrote a short message, two of the Scripture Mastery scriptures come from his writings (Amos 3:7 and Amos 8:11-12).

In the first of these two scriptures, Amos teaches us a powerful lesson. He teaches us that the Lord always speaks through his prophets. In the second scripture, Amos teaches us about the great apostasy, a time when there will be a famine of hearing the word of the Lord.

The message of Amos regarding the importance of prophets is very clear in our day. For centuries after the Church the Lord established during his mortal ministry was lost, the world struggled through darkness. There was no prophet to guide the people. There was no prophet to teach the word of the Lord. There was no prophet declare true doctrine.
預言者の重要性に関するアモスのメッセージは、今日でも非常に明確です。主が現世で設立された教会が失われてから何世紀にもわたって、世界は暗闇の中で苦しんでいました。人々を導き、主の言葉を教える預言者はいませんでした。真の教義を宣言する預言者はいませんでした。
That darkness ended on a spring day in 1820, when Joseph Smith went into the grove to pray. With that prayer, centuries of darkness came to an end. The heavens were again opened and God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ appeared to the new prophet. They gave him authority to restore the gospel to the earth. They gave him direct instructions on what to do, what to teach, and how to organize the Church.
1820年のある春の日、ジョセフ・スミスが祈るために森に入ったとき、その暗闇に終わりが来たのです。その祈りによって、何世紀にもわたる闇は終わりました。天が再び開かれ、父なる神と御子イエス・キリストが新しい預言者に現れました。そして彼に福音を地上に回復する権限を与えました。更に何をすべきか，何を教えるべきか，教会を組織する方法について彼に直接指示を与えられました。
Today, we are blessed to have living prophets and apostles on the earth to teach us and to guide us. We do not need to wonder about what is right and what is wrong. We have the words of living prophets and apostles to point us to the covenant path. We know that they will teach us the word of the Lord.
今日、私たちは地上に生ける預言者と使徒がいて、私たちを教え、導いてくれるという祝福に恵まれています。何が正しく何が間違っているのかと考える必要はありません。わたしたちには，聖約の道を示す生ける預言者と使徒の言葉があります。私たちは彼らが主の言葉を教えてくれることを知っています。
At the same time, we each have a responsibility to gain a testimony of the doctrine that is being taught. President Brigham Young taught us that we should not accept anything we are taught without studying it, praying about it, and receiving our own testimony of its truthfulness. It is our duty to gain our own testimony.

As we go through this next week, let’s remember what a great blessing it is to live in a time when there are living prophets and apostles on the earth. Let’s remember that they teach us the word of the Lord. Let’s remember that we can rely on them to point the way to the covenant path. Let’s also remember our duty to gain our own testimony of the things that we are taught.
