わたしたちがこの世において得る英知の一切は、復活の時にわたしたちとともによみがえる。そこで、もしある人が精励と従順によって、この世で他の人よりも多くの知識と英知を得るならば、来るべき世で有利になる。教義と聖約１３０:１８−１９

Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.  And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he shall have so much the advantage in the world to come.  Doctrine & Covenants 130:18-19

This Section of the Doctrine and Covenants contains several important teachings.  Although they are just short verses, they contain key doctrine for the blessing of the saints.

In particular, in verses 18 and 19, we are taught about the importance of education.

The Church has always been a great proponent of education.  In fact, when the pioneers first came in to the valley of the Great Salt Lake, the first building they built was not a church building.  The first building they built was a school for the children.

教会は教育を強く支持してきました。実際、開拓者たちが最初にグレートソルトレイクの谷にやって来たとき、彼らが最初に建てた建物は教会の建物ではありませんでした。最初に建てた建物は子供たちのための学校でした。

From that time until today, the Church has continued its efforts to help members obtain an education and to improve their skills.  The Seminary and Institute programs help teach the youth and young adults about the gospel.  Sunday School helps teach everyone about the gospel.  The Relief Society, Young Men, and Young Women organizations provide opportunities for members to learn new skills, such as public speaking, service to others, and good health practices.

その時から今日まで、教会員が教育を受け、スキルアップを助けるために努力を続けてきました。セミナリーとインスティテュートのプログラムは、青少年が福音を学ぶのを助けます。日曜学校は、だれでも福音について学ぶのを助けます。扶助協会、若い男性、若い女性の組織は、人前で話すこと、他の人への奉仕、良い健康習慣などの新しいスキルを学ぶ機会を提供します。

In recent years, President Hinckley introduced the Perpetual Education Program.  This program has enabled thousands of Church members to receive training in fields that allow them to get better jobs and to provide for their families.

近年、ヒンクレー大管長は永代教育プログラムを導入しました。このプログラムにより、何千人もの教会員が訓練を受けることで、より良い仕事に就き、家族を養うことができるよう助けています。

Even more recently, the Pathway program has made it possible for thousands more to earn a college degree in various fields, at a very low cost and with great flexibility as to the time commitment.  This program has become a model for education around the world.

さらに最近では、Pathwayプログラムにより、何千人という人が非常に低価格で、時間的にも非常に柔軟に、さまざまな分野で大学の学位を取得することが可能になりました。このプログラムは、世界中の教育のモデルになっています。

But having educational opportunities available is of no use unless we take advantage of them.  Like everything in the gospel, it requires work and effort on our part before we receive the promised blessings.  

しかし、教育の機会があっても、私たちがそれらを利用しない限り役に立ちません。福音の教えと同じように、約束された祝福を受ける前に、自分で努力し動くことが必要です。

There are two key words in this revelation, “diligence” and “obedience”.  We are taught in this revelation that it is only through our diligence and our obedience that we will be able to receive the promised blessing.

この啓示には、「勤勉」と「従順」というふたつのキーワードがあります。この啓示の中で、約束された祝福を受けるには、勤勉と従順が必要不可欠であると教えられています。

In this case, the promised blessing is that we will have a great advantage in the world to come.  The more we learn here in this life, the better will be our situation in the next world.  If we take advantage of the opportunities in this life to learn and to grow, we will have an advantage in the next life.  (and we are all going to end up there some day…)

この場合、約束された祝福は、私たちが来るべき世で有利になるということです。私たちがこの人生で学べば学ぶほど、来るべき世での状況は良くなるでしょう。この人生での機会を利用して学び、成長すれば、来るべき人生で有利になります。 （そして私たちは皆、いつかそこにたどり着くことになります…）

As followers of Jesus Christ, we should all be actively engaged in education and in learning new things.  There is no reason to stop learning, even if we have completed an advanced university degree.  There is so much to learn in this life.  

イエス・キリストの従者として、私たちは皆、教育と新しいことを学ぶことにおいて積極的に取り組むべきです。高度な大学の学位を取得したとしても、学習をやめる理由はありません。この人生で学ぶことはたくさんあります。

As we go through this next week, let’s take time to consider how we can be diligent and obedient.  Let’s find ways to improve our education.  Let’s make a goal to learn new things.  Let’s prepare ourselves to have the advantage in the next world.

新しい週が始まります。私たちがどうしたら勤勉で従順となれるのか考えて過ごしましょう。私たちの教育を改善する方法を見つけましょう。新しいことを学ぶという目標を立てましょう。来るべき世で有利になるための準備をしましょう。
