And the people said unto Joshua, the Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.  Joshua 24:24

We are all familiar with the scripture that is just a few verses before this one.  In Joshua 24:15, Joshua tells the people to “choose ye this day whom ye will serve.”  He then tells them “but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

この少し前には私たちにも馴染みがある聖句があります。ヨシュア記24:15 で、ヨシュアは「あなたがたの仕える者を、きょう選びなさい」と人々に教えています。彼は続いて「ただし、わたしとわたしの家とは共に主に仕えます」と言っています。

This same challenge is given to each of us.  Each of us needs to make this same choice.  We must choose whether we will serve the Lord or not.  

この同じチャレンジが私たちにも与えられています。私たちは皆それぞれこの同じ選択をしなければなりません。私たちは主に仕えるか、仕えないか決めねばなりません。

After Joshua gave this challenge to the people of Israel, they all promised to serve the Lord.  This scripture in verse 24 records their answer.  They all promised to serve the Lord.

ヨシュアがこの奨めをイスラエルの民に与えた後、彼らは全員、主に仕えることを約束しました。この24 節の聖句では彼らの回答が記されています。彼らは全員、主に仕えると約束しました。

How did that work out for them?

結果、どうなったのでしょう？

At first, it went well.  But after Joshua died, things did not go so well.  

最初はうまくいきました。しかしヨシュアが亡くなった後、状況はそううまくいきませんでした。

The Lord had commanded Israel to drive out all the other nations that lived in the land the Lord had given to them.  They were told not to leave any other tribe.  If they did not keep this commandment, the Lord said that those tribes that Israel did not drive out would become “thorns in their sides”.

主はイスラエルの民に主が与えた土地に住んでいる他の民を追い払うように戒められました。彼らは他のどの部族も残さないように言われました。もしこの戒めを守らないと追い払わなかった部族が結果「あなたの脇にとげ」となると言われました。

That is exactly what happened.  After Joshua died, the people of Israel decided that they did not need to fight all the tribes.  They decided that it would be okay to leave some of the other tribes in the land that Israel was given.  They did not keep the commandments of the Lord.

確かにそのようになったのです。ヨシュアが死んだ後、イスラエルの民は全ての部族と戦う必要など無いと判断しました。彼らはイスラエルの民に与えられた土地にいくらか他の部族を残してもよいだろうと判断したのです。彼らは主の戒めを守らなかったのです。

Because of their disobedience to the commandments of the Lord, in just a few years, some of the other tribes began to conquer Israel.  They brought in foreign customs.  They brought in foreign idols.  Israel became corrupted and lost their blessings because of their disobedience.

戒めに対する不従順のために、ほんの数年で他の幾つかの部族がイスラエルを征服し始めたのです。彼らは外国の習慣を持ち込みました。外国の偶像も持ち込みました。イスラエルは自分たちの不従順のために堕落し、祝福を無くしたのです。

Are we sometimes like ancient Israel?

私たちも昔のイスラエルの民のようなときがありませんか？

The Lord has given commandments to us.  We have been told to “drive out all evil things” from our lives, or, in other words, to keep the commandments.  We try to keep the commandments.  But, like ancient Israel, do we still let the “other tribes” live in our “land”?  

主が私たちに戒めを与えられました。私たちの生活から「全ての悪を追い払うよう」、言い換えれば戒めを守るように言われました。私たちは戒めを守るように努力します。しかし、昔のイスラエルの民のように私たちの「土地」に「他の部族」を未だに住ませていませんか？

Do we participate in activities on the Sabbath that are not appropriate?  Do we watch movies or TV shows or things on the Internet that are not appropriate?  Do we use our tithing money to pay for things we want instead of giving it to the Lord?

私たちは安息日にふさわしくない活動に参加していませんか？ふさわしくないテレビの番組やインターネットのサイトを見ていませんか？私たちは什分の一に捧げるお金を、代わりに自分の興味のために使っていませんか？

Elder Neal A. Maxwell said it very well.  He said, “We all want to live the gospel and be part of the Kingdom of God.  But too many of us still want to keep a summer home in Babylon.”

ニールA マックスウェル長老は非常にはっきりと言われています。「私たちは福音に生き神の王国の中にいたいと考えています。しかしあまりにも多くの人がバビロンの別荘を手放したくない」と。

If we follow the pattern of ancient Israel, we will receive the same punishment as they did.  We will be conquered by those “other tribes”.  We will become corrupted and weaken our testimony.  We will lose our blessings.  

もし私たちが古代のイスラエルの民のやり方に従えば、彼らが受けたように私たちも同じ結果を受けることになるでしょう。私たちはそれらの「他の部族」に征服されてしまうでしょう。私たちは堕落し証は弱くなるでしょう。私たちは祝福をなくすでしょう。

Let’s choose this week to serve the Lord.   Let’s drive out the “other tribes” of sin and temptation from our lives.  Let’s be exact in keeping the commandments.

今週、主に仕えると決心しましょう。私たちの生活から罪と誘惑の「他の部族」を追い払いましょう。戒めを守ることに甘えた気持ちでなく厳格でいましょう。

I know that if we do these things, we will receive the promised blessings.  I know that we can learn from the example of ancient Israel and avoid the punishment that they received.  Let’s follow Joshua’s example and say “but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”.

私たちがこれらを行う時、約束された祝福を受けると私は知っています。また昔のイスラエルの民の過ちから学び、彼らが受けた罰を避ける事が出来ると私は知っています。ヨシュアの模範に従い「ただし、わたしとわたしの家とは共に主に仕えます」と言いましょう。
