And this is not all. Do ye not suppose that I know of these things myself? Behold, I testify unto you that I do know that these things whereof I have spoken are true. And how do ye suppose that I know of their surety? Behold, I say unto you, they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I do know of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by his Holy Spirit; and this is the spirit of revelation which is in me. Alma 5:45-46
This message from Alma the younger teaches us a very important doctrine.

Alma had been ordained by his father to be the leader of the Church. He had also been elected by the people as the first Chief Judge. Being the Chief Judge was a very important and impressive assignment. It was somewhat like being the President or the Prime Minister in our day. But, unlike many people who have had assignments like that and have been very famous and powerful, Alma thought that his assignment in the Church was much more important.
アルマは父から教会の指導者として聖任を受けていました。彼は最初の大さばきつかさとして民によって選ばれました。大さばきつかさは非常に重要で立派な任務です。今日の大統領や首相のようなものです。しかし、そのような職務にあり、著名で力のある人々とは異なり、アルマはこの教会での任務がより重要であると考えました。
He thought it was so important that he gave up the office of Chief Judge when he saw that the people of the Church were beginning to fall away from the doctrines of the Church. He resigned as the Chief Judge so he could spend all of this time being a missionary and a priesthood leader.
それがとても重要な任務なので、彼は教会員が教えから離れていくのを見て、大さばきつかさの職を諦めようと考えました。彼は大さばきつかさの職を辞退し、すべての時間を宣教師と神権指導者として捧げるようにしました。
He began to preach to the people in Zarahemla first. Those people did not believe the things that Alma was teaching. In this scripture, Alma testifies to the people that he knows that the things he is teaching are true.
彼はまずゼラヘムラの人々に教え始めました。彼らはアルマが教えることを信じませんでした。この聖句ではアルマは彼が教えていることが真実だと知っていると人々に証しています。
Most importantly for us, Alma teaches us how we too can know that the doctrines of the gospel are true. He tells the people that he had to fast and to pray for many days before he was able to receive a testimony of what he was teaching.
そして最も重要なのは、アルマはどうしたら私たちも福音の教義が真実であると知ることができるのか教えていることです。彼は自分が教えていることについて証を得るために何日も断食し、祈れねばならなかったと人々に教えています。
We have the same opportunity and the same responsibility. We can know the truth of any doctrine of the gospel if we follow those same steps. President Brigham Young taught that no one should believe in the gospel just because someone else said it was true. He said that each person has the duty and the responsibility to study, ponder, and pray to find out for themselves that the gospel is true. This is the same message that Alma teaches us.
私たちも同じ機会と同じ責任があります。それと同じステップを踏めば福音のどのような教義でも真実であると知ることができます。ブリガム・ヤング大管長は誰かが真実だと言ったという理由だけで、誰も福音を信じるべきではないと私たちに教えています。彼は各個人が福音が真実であることを自分自身で知るよう、学び、熟考し、祈る義務と責任を持っていると述べています。アルマもそのように教えています。
We each have the responsibility to follow the counsel of Alma and of President Brigham Young. We each have the responsibility to find out for ourselves about the truth of gospel principles.
私たちはそれぞれ、アルマとブリガム・ヤング大管長の勧告に従う責任を持っています。私たちはそれぞれ、福音の原則が真実であることを自分自身で知る責任があります。
As we follow these steps, we will be taught by the Holy Ghost about the truthfulness of the gospel. We will be able to receive personal revelation as we study, ponder, and pray.
これらのステップに従えば、私たちは福音の真実性について聖霊により証を受けます。私たちは学び、熟考し、祈ることで個人の啓示を受けるでしょう。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember what Alma has taught us. Let’s remember that we too can be taught by the Holy Ghost. Let’s remember that we too can receive personal revelation. Let’s remember that we too can know that the doctrines of the gospel are true.
アルマが教えた事柄を覚えて新しい週を過ごしましょう。私たちも聖霊によって教えられることや、個人の啓示を受けられることを忘れないようにしましょう。福音の教義が真実であると知ることができることを覚えていましょう。
