それでわたしニーファイは、主の命令を守るように努め、また兄たちにも、忠実であり勤勉であるように勧めた。ニーファイ第１書１７：１５
Wherefore, I, Nephi, did strive to keep the commandments of the Lord, and I did exhort my brethren to faithfulness and diligence. 1 Nephi 17:5
In this short scripture, Nephi gives us a very good pattern to follow in our own lives. In just a few words, he teaches us a great lesson.
ニーファイは私たちが生活の中で従うべき非常によい方式をこの短い聖句で教えています。短い言葉の中にはすばらしい教えがあります。
There are two important ideas in this scripture.
この聖句には二つの大切な教えがあります。
First, Nephi says that “I, Nephi, did strive to keep the commandments of the Lord”. The most important word in that sentence is “I”.
まずニーファイは「わたしニーファイは、主の命令を守るように努め」た言っています。この文章でもっとも重要な言葉は「わたし」です。
The most important thing we need to do is to make sure WE are keeping the commandments of the Lord.
私たちがすべき最も重要なことは「私たち」が主の戒めを守り続けることです。
If we are not keeping the commandments, we cannot help others. We cannot make any progress. We cannot receive the blessings that we need.
私たちが戒めを守っていなければ、ほかの誰も助けることは出来ません。進歩もできませんし、私たちに必要な祝福も受けられません。
So, as Nephi shows us, our first and most important responsibility is to make sure we are keeping all the commandments.
ニーファイが示しているように、最初でまた最も重要な私たちの責任は全ての戒めを確かに守っているということです。
Nephi uses the word “strive”. In English, this means to work hard, to put out effort, to do one’s best. It does not mean to be perfect. It means to keep trying.
ニーファイは「努める」と言う言葉を使っています。英語でこの意味は熱心に働く、努力をする、最善を尽くすということです。完全であるということではありません。それは努力し続けるという意味です。
We will all make mistakes. We will all have failures. We will all commit sin.
私たちは誰でも間違うことがあります。失敗したり、罪を犯します。
But we are to do our best to repent, to improve, to do better. That is our first responsibility.
しかし私たちは最善を尽くして悔い改め、進歩し、よりよく出来るようにしなければなりません。それが私たちの最初の責任です。
Second, Nephi says that he “did exhort my brethren to faithfulness and diligence”.
次に、ニーファイは「兄たちにも、忠実であり勤勉であるように勧めた」述べています。
This is our second great responsibility.
これが次に大切な私たちの務めであり責任です。
In English, “to exhort” means to encourage, to help, to teach.
英語の「to exhort(=勧める)」は励ます、助ける、教えるといった意味があります。
Even though we are not yet perfect, we have a responsibility to encourage others to keep the commandments.
たとえ私たちは完全でなくとも、戒めを守るように他の誰かを励ます責任が私たちにはあります。
We do this in our callings. We do this by being a good visiting teacher or home teacher. We do this by showing good examples to others by the way we live.
私たちは受けている召しを通してそれを行ないます。家庭訪問教師やホームティーチングをする事でそれを行います。また日々の行いから模範を他の人に示すことでそれを行います。
But remember, the word “to exhort” does not mean “to push” or “to force”.
けれども「勧める」には「させる」とか「強制する」という意味がない事を忘れないでください。
We are to encourage others, but we are not to force them to change. We are to teach them correct principles, then let them choose what they want to do.
私たちはほかの人を励まさねばなりませんが、変わるように強制はしてはいけません。正しい原則を教え彼らが自らしたいと思う事を選ばせるのです。
Nephi does not say that his brothers changed after he “exhorted” them. In fact, we know that his brothers did not change. But that did not mean that Nephi could stop trying to encourage them.
ニーファイは「勧めた」後、兄弟たちが変わったとは述べていません。実際、兄弟たちは変わらなかったことを私たちは知っています。しかしニーファイが彼らを励ます事を諦めてもよかったということではありません。
We all have people in our own lives, often some of our family members, who have strayed from the gospel path. Like Nephi, we have a responsibility to encourage them and to teach them. But we cannot force anyone to change. That is not part of our responsibility.
私たちは個々の人生において福音の道から迷い出た人に出会うことがあります。、時としてそれは自分の家族にいるかもしれません。ニーファイのように私たちにも彼らを励まし教える責任があります。しかし彼らが変わるよう強制することは出来ません。それは私たちのすることではありません。
Let’s try hard this week to remember the example of Nephi. Let’s try hard to make sure that we are keeping the commandments. Let’s try hard to encourage those around us. Let’s try hard to be patience and to not give up.
今週はニーファイの模範を忘れなように努力しましょう。戒めを守り続けるよう頑張りましょう。自分の周りの人々を励ましましょう。忍耐を持って決して諦めない様にしましょう。
I know that as we do these things, miracles will occur. I know that as we do these things, lives will be blessed. I know that as we do these things, we will be blessed.
私はそれらを行なう時、奇跡が起こることを知っています。それらを行なう時、私たちの生活が祝福されることを知っています。私たちは祝福を受けるのです。
