それでもわたしは神に頼り、一日中神を賛美し、わたしの遭った苦難のことで主に対してつぶやくことはしなかった。ニーファイ第一書１８：１６
Nevertheless, I did look unto my God, and I did praise him all the day long; and I did not murmur against the Lord because of mine afflictions. 1 Nephi 18:16
In this scripture, we are taught a great lesson by Nephi.
この聖句ではニーファイが私たちにとても大切なレッスンを教えています。
Nephi had worked very hard to help save his family. He led them through the wilderness. He found food for them. He even built a boat for them.
ニーファイは家族を救うためにとても熱心に働きました。彼は荒野の中を導き、家族のために食料も見つけました。また彼らのために船も造りました。
He did all these things because he was commanded by the Lord. He knew that if he and his family would follow the commandments, they would all be blessed. He knew that he had to do these things even when his brothers were angry with him.
彼はこれらすべてを主から与えられた戒めだという理由で行いました。彼は主の戒めに従うならば彼と家族が祝福されると知っていました。彼はたとえ兄弟が怒っていようとこれらのことをしなければならないと知っていました。
So they were finally on the ship, sailing to the promised land.
そして彼らはついに船に乗り、約束の地に向かって出帆しました。
Were his brothers thankful for all his hard work? Did they respect him for all his efforts trying to help them? Did they try to help him?
彼の兄弟はニーファイの熱心な働きに感謝しましたか？彼らはニーファイが彼らを救うために行ったすべての努力に敬意を表しましたか？彼らはニーファイを手伝おうとしましたか？
No, they were still angry with him. After all that Nephi had done to help them, they still refused to keep the commandments.
いいえ、兄たちはまだ怒っていました。ニーファイが彼らを救うためにすべてのことを行った後も、彼らはまだ戒めを守ることを拒んでいました。
In this scripture, Nephi’s brothers have tied him up with ropes and treated him “with much harshness”.
この聖句によると、ニーファイの兄たちは彼を縄で縛り上げ「情け容赦なく」扱ったのです。
Instead of being angry, Nephi endured his very difficult trial with patience. In verse 11, Nephi says: “the Lord did suffer it that he might show forth his power”.
ニーファイは怒るのではなく忍耐を持って非常に難しい試練を耐えました。11節でニーファイは「（主は）御自分の力を現すために、そのままにしておかれた」と言っています。
Nephi did not “murmur against the Lord”, even in this difficult situation. He had much pain and suffering, but he did not complain. He “did look unto my God, and did praise him all the day long”.
ニーファイはこの難しい状況でも「主に対してつぶやくこと」はしませんでした。彼は多くの痛みや苦しみを受けましたが、苦情を言うことなく、「主に頼り、一日中神を賛美しました」。
What a wonderful example for us.
何とすばらしい模範でしょう。
All of us have trials and difficult situations. All of us have times when we suffer pain, either physical or mental or emotional pain. All of us have times when, even after we have done many good things, we have a trial.
私たちは誰でも試練や苦難の時があります。私たちは誰でも肉体的や精神的、感情的な痛みで苦しむ時があります。私たちは、たとえ多くの良いことを行った後でさえも試練を受けるのです。
Often, when these trials come, we are quick to complain. We ask “why me? Why do I have to suffer?” We think the Lord is punishing us.
そのような試練がやってくると私たちはすぐに苦情を言います。何故私なの？どうして私が苦しまなければならないの？私たちは主が私たちを罰しておられるのだと考えます。
When we have trials, let us remember the example of Nephi. Let us try to endure the trial and the pain like Nephi did, still giving thanks to the Lord. Let us remember that the Lord loves us and will always help us.
私たちが試練を受ける時は、ニーファイの模範を思い出しましょう。ニーファイがそんな時にも主に感謝をささげたように、私たちも試練や痛みに耐えましょう。主が私たちを愛し常に助けてくださることを覚えていましょう。
That is a very hard thing to do, but it is the right thing. It may not make the trial go away or end sooner, but it does change our attitude about the trial. It helps us to endure and strengthens us.
それはとても行いにくいことですが、正しいことです。試練を避けたり、すぐにそれを無くならせたりすることは出来ませんが、試練に対する私たち自身の態度を変えることは出来ます。そうすることで私たちを強め耐えることが出来るよう助けてくれるのです。
As we endure the trials and problems that are part of this mortal journey, let us try to be more like Nephi. Let us remember his example when we have our own times of pain and suffering. Let us “look unto God and praise him all the day long”.
この死すべき旅路に不可欠な要素である試練や問題を耐えるとき、ニーファイがしたように振舞いましょう。私たちが痛みや苦しみの中にあるとき彼の模範を思い出しましょう。「主に頼り、一日中神を賛美し」ましょう。
I know that we can do this. I know that the Lord will bless us as we struggle to endure. I know that he will lighten our burdens and help us.
私はそれができることを知っています。私たちが苦しい思いをしながらも忍耐するとき主が祝福してくださることを知っています。私は主が私たちの重荷を軽くし助けてくださることを知っています。
