あなたがた、いくさびとはみな、町を巡って、町の周囲を一度回らなければならない。六日の間そのようにしなければならない。七人の祭司たちは、おのおの雄羊の角のラッパを携えて、箱に先立たなければならない。そして七日目には七度町を巡り、祭司たちはラッパを吹き鳴らさなければならない。そして祭司たちが雄羊の角を長く吹き鳴らし、そのラッパの音が、あなたがたに聞こえる時、民はみな大声に呼ばわり、叫ばなければならない。そうすれば、町の周囲の石がきは、くずれ落ち、民はみなただちに進んで、攻め上ることができる。ヨシュア記６：３−５

And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once.  Thus shalt thou do six times.  And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.  And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horns, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.  Joshua 6:3-5

This week, we study another one of the great stories of the Old Testament.  Moses had died and Joshua was now the leader of the children of Israel.  They had come into the land of promise and had been commanded by the Lord to destroy the people who were living there.

今週は、旧約聖書からもうひとつのすばらしい物語を学びます。モーセは亡くなり、ヨシュアがイスラエルの民の指導者となりました。彼らは約束の地に入り、そこに住んでいた人々を滅ぼすように主から命じられました。

One of the strongest fortifications in the land of promise was the city of Jericho.  It had strong walls all around it.  The children of Israel were small in number.  It seemed impossible for them to conquer Jericho.

約束の地で最も強力な防備のひとつは、エリコの町でした。 周りには強固な石垣がありました。イスラエルの民は少数だったので、彼らがエリコを征服することは不可能のように思えました。

The Lord, though his prophet Joshua, gave the children of Israel very specific instructions about how to conquer Jericho.  The army of Israel was to walk completely around the city of Jericho each day, for six days.  While they were doing this, they must remain quiet and not make noise.

主は預言者ヨシュアを通して、イスラエルの民にエリコを征服する方法について非常に具体的な指示を与えられました。イスラエル軍は、6日間、毎日エリコの町を巡るということでした。彼らがそれをする時は、騒がず静かにしていなければなりませんでした。

On the seventh day, though, they were to walk completely around the city seven times.  On the seventh time, the priests were to blow the trumpets.  When the people heard the trumpets, they were all to shout with a loud voice.  If they followed these instructions exactly, the walls of the city would collapse and Israel could conquer Jericho.

しかし、7日目には、彼らは町を7回巡ることになりました。そして7回目に、祭司がラッパを吹くことになっていました。人々がラッパの音を聞いたとき、彼らは皆大きな声で叫ぶことになっていました。彼らがその指示に忠実に従えば、町の石垣は崩壊し、イスラエルはエリコを征服することができるのです。

To many of the children of Israel, these instructions must have seemed very strange.  How could walking around the city, or even shouting, make the strong walls of the city collapse?  That seemed ridiculous.

多くのイスラエルの民にとって、その指示は非常に奇妙に思えたに違いありません。町を巡ったり、叫んだりして、町の強固な石垣を崩壊させるなどとは、ばかげているように思えました。

But Joshua and the army followed the instructions of the Lord exactly.  They walked all the way around the city once each day, without making any noise.  On the seventh day, they walked around the city seven times.  On that seventh time, the priests blew on the trumpets, the people shouted with a loud voice, and a miracle happened.  The strong walls of the city of Jericho collapsed.

しかし、ヨシュアと軍隊は主の指示通りに従いました。彼らは音も立てずに一日一回町を巡りました。7日目、彼らは町を7回巡り、その7回目に祭司がラッパを吹き、人々は大きな声で叫び、奇跡が起こりました。エリコの町の強固な石垣が崩壊したのです。

There is a great lesson to be learned from this story.  

この話から学ぶべき素晴らしい教訓があります。

Sometimes, when we pray for help with a problem, the Lord gives us an answer that does not seem to make sense.  Just like Naaman, who was told to bath in the river seven times to be healed of his leprosy, we think that the instructions we have been given won’t help.  

私たちが問題の助けを求めて祈るとき、主は私たちには理解しがたい答えを時々与えられます。ハンセン病を治すために川で7回体を洗うように言われたナアマンのように、私たちが与えられる勧告は役に立たないと疑ったりします。

Are there any “strong walls” in our own lives that need to knocked down?  Are there any “strong walls” in our own lives that are holding us back from receiving the blessings the Lord has promised to us?  Are there any “strong walls” in our own lives that we allow to remain standing because of our own disbelief and lack of faith?

私たちの生活の中に、倒す必要のある「強固な石垣」はありますか？主が私たちに約束された祝福を受けることを妨げている「強固な石垣」はありますか？私たちの信仰の欠如が原因で、進歩、成長を妨げている「強固な石垣」はありますか？

The Lord is a God of miracles.  In the April 2022 General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson taught us that we should look for and expect miracles.  The Lord can knock down all those “strong walls” in our own lives, if we follow his instructions exactly.  The miracles we ask for can happen, if we have faith and do our part.

主は奇跡の神です。 2022年4月の総大会で、ラッセル M ネルソン大管長は、奇跡を探し求め、期待すべきだと教えられました。私たちが主の指示に確かに従うならば、生活の中のすべての「強固な石垣」を主が打ち倒してくださいます。私たちが信仰を持ち、自分の役割を果たすならば、求める奇跡が生じる可能性があります。

As we go through this next week, let’s follow the counsel of President Nelson and look for and expect miracles to happen.  Let’s remember that those miracles happen only if we follow the instructions of the Lord.  Let’s remember the example of Joshua and the children of Israel at Jericho.  Let’s do our best to be worthy of the miracles that we need in our own lives.
