すると、王は答えて言うであろう、「あなたがたによく言っておく。わたしの兄弟であるこれらの最も小さい者のひとりにしたのは、すなわち、わたしにしたのである」。マタイ２５：４０

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.  Matthew 25:40

救い主が、地上で行われた教導の業は、たいてい社会のはざまにいる人々に奉仕されたことが書かれています。裕福な人、力のある人、地位のある人たちと交わることはあまりありませんでした。むしろ、貧しい人、病気の人、苦しんでいる人に奉仕されたのです。

During the Savior’s earthly ministry, we usually read about him ministering to those on the fringes of society.  He did not often mingle with the wealthy, the powerful, or the important people.  Rather, he ministered to the poor, the sick, the afflicted.  

この聖句に至るまでに、救い主は、主が再び来られるとき、義人と悪人を分けると説明されています。救い主に対する多くの親切や慈善の行いに対して、救い主は義人に報いられるでしょう。しかし、義人は「私たちはあなたを助けるために何もしませんでした」と言うでしょう。

Leading up to this verse, the Savior explains that when the Lord comes again, he will separate the righteous from the wicked.  The Lord will reward the righteous for their many acts of kindness and charity to him.  But the righteous will say, “we never did anything to help you”.

そして、救い主は重要な教訓を教えてくださいました。困っている人を助けるためにする私たちの行いは、私たちが救い主に行うのと同じであると教えておられます。

The Savior then teaches us an important lesson.  He teaches us that anything we do to help anyone in need is just the same as if we had done it to him.  

なぜでしょうか？

Why is this?  

もし救い主を直接助けることができれば、それは凄いことに思えます。救い主が喉が渇いたときに水を飲ませたり、お腹が空いているときにパンを与えたり、病気のときに主を見舞ったりすることができたら、あなたはどんな気持ちになりますか？

It seems like it would be much more important if we could do something to help the Savior directly.  How would you feel if you were able to give a drink of water to the Savior when he was thirsty, or a piece of bread to him when he was hungry, or to visit him when he was sick?

もしそうできるなら、私たちは皆、主のために喜んで、何でもすることができるでしょう。

If we could, we would all be happy and willing to do any of those things for the Lord.  

しかし、誰もが、救い主のためにそのようなことをする機会は、まずないでしょう。では、どうすれば約束された祝福を受けることができるのでしょうか？

But, it is very unlikely that any one of us will ever have the opportunity to do anything like that for the Savior.  So how can we receive the promised blessings?

救い主は大きな愛と親切をもって私たちに教えておられます。助けを必要としている人を助けるために私たちが行うことは、救い主のために直接行うのと同じくらい重要であると。

With great love and kindness, the Savior teaches us that anything we do to help anyone in need is just as important as if we had done it directly for the Savior.  

救い主は、私たちがこの地上で救い主の「手」になることを求めておられます。救い主は、苦しみを和らげるために私たちを必要としています。悲しむ人々を慰めるために私たちを必要としています。救い主は、悲しんでいる人々を励ますために私たちを必要としています。イエス・キリストの真の弟子としてどのように行動すべきか、私たちは模範を示す必要があります。

The Savior needs us to be his “hands” here on earth.  He needs us to relieve suffering.  He needs us to comfort those who mourn.  He needs us to encourage those who are sad.  He needs us to set an example of how a true disciple of Jesus Christ should act.

困っているのが友人であれば、そういったことはたいてい簡単にできるものです。たとえ、私たちがよく知らない教会員が困っているときでも、私たちは簡単に奉仕することができます。

Those things are usually pretty easy to do when it is a friend of ours who is in need.  Even when it is a Church member that we don’t really know who is in need, we can minister easily.

しかし、助けを必要としている人が教会員でない場合はどうでしょうか？助けを必要としている人がホームレスで、汚れていて、だらしがなかったらどうでしょうか？その人が悪い選択をしてしまい、困窮した場合はどうでしょうか？助けを必要としている人が、たまたま私たちの気分を害したり、私たちが信じていることに反することを信じている人だったらどうでしょうか？

But what if the person in need is not a member of the Church?  What if the person in need is homeless, dirty, and unkempt?  What if the person has made bad choices that left him or her in need?  What if the person in need happens to be someone who has offended us or believes in things contrary to what we believe in?

では、どうしますか？

What then?

このような場合、私たちは救い主の教えと模範を思い出します。私たちは救い主の模範に倣い、どのような状況にあっても、誰にでも親切にします。私たちは、社会的、政治的信条がどうであれ、困っている人に手を差し伸べることで救い主の模範に従います。私たちは、誰もが天父の愛する娘や息子であることを覚えて救い主の模範に従います。

In these cases, we remember the teaching and example of the Savior.  We follow his example by being kind to everyone, no matter what their situation.  We follow his example by ministering to those in need, no matter what their social or political beliefs.  We follow his example by remembering that everyone is a beloved daughter or son of Heavenly Father.  We follow his example by serving as he served.

新しい週が始まります。私たちが誰かを助けるためにすることは、あたかも救い主自身を助けるためにするのと同じであることを覚えて過ごしましょう。救い主は、助けを必要とする人を選り好みされなかったことを思い出しましょう。私たちは、どんな状況にある兄弟姉妹に対しても、彼らにどのように接するかによって裁かれることを心に留めておきましょう。救い主イエス・キリストの模範に倣って、困っているすべての人に奉仕するよう、最善を尽くしましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s remember that anything we do to help someone else is just as if we did it to help the Savior himself.  Let’s remember that the Savior did not exclude anyone who needed help.  Let’s remember that we will be judged by how we treat our brothers and sisters, in whatever situation we find them in.  Let’s do our best to follow the example of our Savior Jesus Christ in ministering to all who are in need.
