なぜあなたがたは、キリストの名を受けるのを恥じるのか。無窮の幸福が、決して尽きないあの不幸な状態よりも大きな価値があることを考えないのか。それは世の誉れのためである。
モルモン書８：３８
… Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ? Why do ye not think that greater is the value of an endless happiness than that misery which never dies — because of the praise of the world? Mormon 8:38
In this scripture, Mormon’s son, Moroni, warns us about one of Satan’s tricks.
この聖句でモルモンの息子モロナイはサタンのある策略について警告しています。
Everybody wants to be popular. Everyone wants to have lots of friends. Everyone wants to be accepted.
誰もが有名で人気者になりたいと思っています。誰もがたくさんの友達を欲しがったり、自分を受け入れてほしいと思っています。
Those are all worthy goals. But, like many of Satan’s tricks, Satan takes something that is good when used in moderation. He then makes it seem like being popular is the only important goal in our lives.
それらは価値ある目標です。しかしサタンは他の多くの策略のように気が付かないよう巧みに良いものを取り去ります。サタンは有名で人気の有ることが人生の最重要な目標であるかのように思わせます。
The world thinks we are strange. We don’t drink. We don’t use bad language. We don’t participate in many of the activities that the world offers. We keep the Sabbath Day holy. We make and keep sacred covenants. We do many other things that the world does not understand.
私たちは世間では少し変人のように思われています。私たちはお酒を飲まず、悪い言葉を使わず、世間で一般的な多くの活動にも参加しません。私たちは安息日を清く過ごします。神聖な聖約を交わし、それを守ります。他にも世間の人が理解しがたい多くのことを行います。
Being a true follower of Jesus Christ will always make us different than the rest of the people in the world. The Lord has said many times that those who believe in Jesus Christ and do their best to keep his commandments will be few in number.
イエス・キリストの真の従者であることは私たちを世の人とは常に異なった存在にしています。主は幾度も言われていますが、イエス・キリストを信じ、主の戒めを守ろうと最善の努力をする者の数は少ないのです。
We are different. We are small in number. We are, in the words of Moses, a “peculiar people” (Deuteronomy 14:2).
私たちは異なった存在です。私たちは少数派で、モーセの言う「宝の民」なのです。（申命記14:2）
The world offers us popularity, fame, and, maybe even money.
世間は私たちに有名、人気者、名声、そして富が良いものだと提案します。
But all those things are short term. None of them will extend beyond this life. Even some of the people who have gained “the praise of the world”, popularity, fame, and money are still not happy.
しかしそういったものは長続きしません。それらの何一つこの世を超えることなどできないのです。知名度、名声、富等の「世が賞賛するもの」を得た人を見ても、未だに幸せでない人が多くいます。
The only true happiness is found by keeping the commandments and by doing our best to be a good follower of Jesus Christ. We will have trials and difficulties in this life. Those people in the “large and spacious building” will laugh at us and make fun of us. But like Nephi taught us, we “heed them not” (1 Nephi 8:33).
真の幸せは唯一、戒めを守り、イエス・キリストのよい従者になろうと最善を尽くすことで見いだせるのです。私たちは人生において試練や苦難を経験します。「大きく広々とした建物」にいる人々は私たちをあざけり笑うでしょう。しかしニーファイが教えたように私たちは「彼らの事を気に留め」てはいけないのです。
Our goals are eternal. They are not limited to the brief time we spend in this life. Moroni pleads with us to remember that we are making eternal choices. We are choosing not just happiness or misery in this life, but happiness or misery throughout the eternities.
私たちの目標は永遠です。それは私たちがこの世で過ごす短い時間に限られません。私たちは永遠の選択をしていることを忘れないようにとモロナイは嘆願しています。私たちは単にこの世だけでなく永遠の幸福か不幸を選んでいるのです。
We can choose eternal happiness. We can choose to make right choices. We can choose to be a true follower of Jesus Christ.
私たちは永遠の幸福を選べるのです。正しい選択をしイエス・キリストの真の従者となる選択ができるのです。
Let’s remember Moroni’s warning message. Let’s remember that Satan is trying to trick us. Let’s remember to choose those things that will bring eternal happiness. Let’s make good choices each day.
モロナイの警告を覚えていましょう。サタンは巧妙に私たちを騙そうとしていることを忘れないようにしましょう。永遠の幸福をもたらす事柄を選択するように。そして毎日良い選択をしましょう。
I know that we can receive the endless happiness that Moroni teaches us about. I know that we can escape Satan’s trap if we will keep the commandments of Jesus Christ. I know that these things are true.
モロナイが教えた終わりのない幸せを享受できることを私は知っています。イエス・キリストの戒めを守るなら私たちはサタンの策略から逃れることができるのです。これらが真実であると知っています。
