しかし、わたしニーファイは、これまで書き記してきたものを大いに価値があると考え、特にわたしの民にとってそうであると考えている。わたしは昼は絶えず民のために祈り、夜は彼らのことを心配して涙で枕を濡らしている。そしてわたしは、信仰をもって神に叫び求めている。わたしは、神がわたしの嘆願を聞き届けてくださることを知っている。また、主なる神がわたしの祈りを民の益となるように神聖なものとしてくださることを、わたしは知っている。また、弱点がありながらも書き記してきた言葉は、わたしの民のために力強いものとなるであろう。それは、この言葉が善を行うように説き勧め、また彼らに先祖のことを知らせ、イエスについて述べ、イエスを信じて最後まで堪え忍ぶように彼らに説き勧めるものだからである。イエスを信じて最後まで堪え忍ぶならば、永遠の命を授かるである。ニーファイ第二書３３：３−４
But I, Nephi, have written what I have written, and I esteem it as of great worth, and especially unto my people. For I pray continually for them by day, and mine eyes water my pillow at night, because of them; and I cry unto my God in faith, and I know he will hear my cry. And I know that the Lord God will consecrate my prayer for the gain of my people. And the words which I have written in weakness will be strong unto them; for it persuadeth them to do good; it maketh known unto them of their fathers; and it speaketh of Jesus, and persuadeth them to believe in him, and to endure to the end, which is life eternal. 2 Nephi 33:3-4
In this scripture, Nephi explains why he works so hard to engrave the record of his people on plates. We know that the process of engraving on the plates was very difficult. It took a lot of time and effort to record the messages on plates. But Nephi and the other prophets knew that only metal plates were durable enough to last through the ages.
この聖句でニーファイは何故こんなにも熱心に民の記録を版に刻むのか説明しています。私たちは版の上に刻むという作業が非常に難しいことを知っています。版にメッセージを記録するには時間や努力を要します。けれどもニーファイや他の預言者は金属の版だけが長く持ちこたえることを知っていました。
Think about how difficult it would be to write on metal plates. Most of us today don’t even write on paper. It is so much easier just to type things. We have automatic spell checkers. We can instantly erase, copy, or move text.
金属の版に書くのがどれほど難しいことか考えてみてください。現代、私たちは紙の上にすら書くことが少なくなりました。タイプを打つ方がずっと簡単ですし、自動スペルチェッカーもあります。瞬時に文字を消したり、コピー、移動したりできます。
If you try writing on metal plates, there is no spell checker. There is no way to “copy and paste”. There is no way to make any corrections at all.
金属の版に書こうとしてもスペルチェッカーはありません。「コピペ」する方法もありません。後で訂正する方法もありません。
So why did Nephi work so hard?
ではニーファイは何故そんなに熱心だったのでしょう？
He knows that the words that he will write will help to bless and save his people.
彼が書く言葉が彼の民を祝福し救うことを彼は知っていました。
And who are “his people”?
では「彼の民」とは誰のことでしょう？
Certainly, the other descendants of his father, Lehi. They were all “his people”. The faithful Nephites, those that wanted to follow the Lord, they were also “his people”.
間違いなく、彼の父、リーハイの子孫のことです。彼らは全て「彼の民」なのです。忠実で主に従いたいと望んでいたニーファイ人も「彼の民」なのです。
What about us? Are we “his people”? Are the words that Nephi worked so hard to write important to us? Nephi says that his words will be “of great worth, and especially unto my people”. If we are “his people”, do we “esteem it as of great worth”?
私たちはどうでしょう？「彼の民」でしょうか？ ニーファイが熱心に書き留めた言葉は私たちにも大切なものでしょうか？ニーファイの言葉は「大いに価値があり、特にわたしの民にとってそうである」と述べています。私たちが「彼の民」であれば「大いに価値があると考え」るでしょうか？
Do we study the words that Nephi and the other Book of Mormon prophets wrote? Do we spend time each day reading from The Book of Mormon?
あなたはニーファイやモルモン書の他の預言者が書いた言葉を学びますか？毎日時間を取ってモルモン書を読みますか？
What are we taught in the words written by Nephi? We are taught about our Savior, Jesus Christ. We are taught to believe in him.
ニーファイが書いた言葉から私たちは何を教わるでしょう？私たちは救い主イエス・キリストについて学びます。私たちは救い主を信じることを教わります。
If we esteem Nephi’s words to be of great value, if we believe in Jesus Christ, and if we endure to the end, we will gain the ultimate blessing. The ultimate blessing is life eternal.
もしニーファイの言葉を価値あるものと尊重し、イエス・キリストを信じ、最後まで耐え忍ぶならば私たちは究極の祝福を受けるでしょう。究極の祝福とは永遠の命のことです。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember the efforts and struggles of Nephi to preserve these words for us. Let’s be “his people”. Let’s have greater faith in our Savior and a greater desire to follow him. Let’s all endure to the end, and gain the ultimate blessing of life eternal.
新しい週を過ごすとき、ニーファイが私たちのためにこの言葉を守ろうとした努力や苦難を忘れないようにしましょう。「彼の民」になりましょう。私たちの救い主にもっと大きな信仰を持ち、救い主に従うよう強い望みを持ちましょう。最後まで耐え忍び、永遠の命と言う究極の祝福を手に入れましょう。
