In the spring and early summer of 1831, the saints who had been living in the eastern states began to arrive in Kirtland, Ohio.
1831年の春から初夏にかけて、東部の州に住んでいた聖徒がオハイオ州カートランドに到着し始めました。
These people left behind everything that had been part of their lives before. They left their homes and their lands and in many cases their friends and families.
彼らは、生活に使っていたすべてのものを後に残してきました。彼らは自分の家と土地、そして友人と家族すら後に残してきました。
The only material things that they could bring with them to this new gathering spot were just the things that they could carry in their wagons. Their possessions were small, a few clothes, some farm tools, a few blankets, some cooking pots, a little food, and not much else.

Kirtland was not a big city, or even a big town. It was just a small village. There were no houses for sale, no apartments for rent, and no hotels. There was just forest and wilderness.
カートランドは大都市ではなく、小さな村でした。 売り家も賃貸アパートもホテルもありませんでした。ただ森と荒野があるだけでした。
The members who arrived in Kirtland had to start by clearing some land and building crude shelters. They had to plow new fields and plant crops in order to have something to eat. Cooking had to be done on open fires in the field. Water had to be brought from the stream in a bucket. They had to work hard just to survive.
カートランドに到着した会員は、土地を開墾し、粗末な作りの避難所を建設することから始めなければなりませんでした。彼らは何かを食べるために新しい畑を耕し、作物を植えなければなりませんでした。料理は野外で直火で行わなければなりませんでした。水はバケツで小川から運ばれなければなりませんでした。彼らは生き残るためだけに一生懸命働かなければなりませんでした。
A conference was held in June of 1831, during which a number of brethren were called to serve missions. These were not the 18 or 19 year old boys who serve as missionaries today. These were all married men who had wives and families to support. They had all just arrived in Kirtland and were trying to build log cabins for their families. Yet, they all answered the call to serve the Lord.

In verse 40, the Lord commands the members to always remember the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted. Compared to us in our day, everyone in Kirtland was poor and needy. They had almost nothing, yet they were taught by the Lord to always help those in need.
40節で、主は会員に、貧しい者と乏しい者、病気の者と苦しんでいる者を常に覚えておくように命じられています。私たちの時代と比較して、カートランドの誰もが貧しく乏しい者でした。彼らには何もありませんでしたが、常に困っている人々を助けるように主から教えられました。
Given how much better off we are than the saints in Kirtland, we must always be willing to help the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted. We have our own trials and difficulties, but those are nothing like the trials and difficulties experienced by these early members.
カートランドの聖徒よりもはるかに恵まれていることを考えると、私たちは常に貧しい者や乏しい者、病気の者や苦しんでいる者を喜んで助けなければなりません。私たちには個々の試練と困難がありますが、それらはこれらの初期の会員が経験した試練と困難とはまったく異なります。
We complain about having to wear face masks and about not being able to meet at Church. They were working hard every moment of their lives just to have food and shelter.

They set a wonderful example for us of how a true disciple of Jesus Christ should live. They showed us that, even in their very difficult circumstances, they were willing to help those in need.

Today, there are many around us who are among the “poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted”. What are we doing to make their burdens lighter? What are we doing to relieve their suffering? What are we doing to bring the light of Christ into their lives?
今日、私たちの周りには「貧しい者と乏しい者、病気の者と苦しんでいる者」が多くいます。彼らの負担を軽くするために私たちは何をしていますか？彼らの苦しみを和らげるために私たちは何をしていますか？キリストの光を彼らの生活にもたらすために私たちは何をしていますか？
As we go through this next week, let’s remember the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted. Let’s remember that, while we cannot help everyone, we can help someone. Let’s look for opportunities to serve those people. Let’s find ways to share the light of Jesus Christ with those in darkness. Let’s do something to benefit someone this week.
新しい週が始まります。貧しい者と乏しい者、病気の者と苦しんでいる者を心にかけて過ごしましょう。すべての人を助けることはできませんが、誰かを助けることはできることを忘れないでください。それらの人々に奉仕する機会を探しましょう。イエス・キリストの光を暗闇の中で分かち合う方法を見つけましょう。今週、誰かの役に立つために何かをしましょう。
