すると、ペテロが答えて言った。『主よ、あなたでしたか。では、わたしに命じて、水の上を渡ってみもとに行かせてください』。イエスは「おいでなさい」と言われたのでペテロは船からおり、水の上の歩いてイエスのところへ言った。しかし、風を見て恐ろしくなり、そしておぼれかけたので、彼は叫んで、『主よ、お助けください』と言った。イエスはすぐに手を伸ばして彼をつかまえて言われた、『信仰の薄い者よ、なぜ疑ったのか』。マタイによる福音書14:28-31

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.  And he said, Come.  And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.  But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.  And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?  Matthew 14:28-31

There are many important lessons in this scripture from the New Testament.  

新約聖書のこの聖句には大切な教えが多く含まれています。

Jesus had told Peter and the other disciples to get into a ship and to go to the other side the Sea of Galilee.  He left them and went up to a mountain to pray.  During the night, while the disciples were sailing, there was a storm, with strong winds and big waves.

イエスはペテロと他の弟子たちに船に乗りガリラヤ湖の対岸に渡るよう言われました。イエスは彼らと別れ、祈るため山に登られました。夜中、弟子たちが航海していると強風と大波の嵐が起こりました。

Very early in the morning, Jesus came out to the ship, walking on the water.  The disciples were afraid and “cried out with fear”.  But Jesus called to them and told them not to be afraid.

明け方早くイエスは水の上を歩いて船のところに来られました。弟子たちは恐れ「恐怖のあまり叫び声をあげた」のです。しかしイエスは彼らに声をかけ恐れることなかれと言われました。

This was a very strange thing for the disciples.  I think it would be a very strange thing for us, to see someone walking on the water.  That violates all the rules of nature that we know about.  None of us can walk on water.

これは弟子たちにはとても不思議なできごとでした。私たちも誰かが水上を歩いていたら不思議に思うでしょう。それは私たちが知る自然の法則に反しています。私たちは誰も水上を歩くことなど出来ません。

Peter asked Jesus to command him to come out to him on the water.  Peter had enough faith to want to believe.  

ペテロはイエスに、わたしに命じて水の上を渡ってみもとに行かせてください、と尋ねました。ペテロは信じたいという十分な信仰を持っていました。

Jesus told Peter to come out of the boat and walk on the water to him.  What happened then?

イエスはペテロに舟から降り、水の上を歩いてイエスのところへ来るように言われました。それからどうなったのでしょう？

Peter had faith in the Lord.  He had faith that he could do anything the Lord told him to do, even if it seemed to violate what he knew of natural laws.  He got out of the boat and began to walk on the water.

ペテロは主に信仰を持っていました。彼は、たとえ自然の法則に逆らうことであっても主が命じられることは何でも出来ると言う信仰を持っていました。彼は船から降り水の上を歩き始めました。

Did Peter know how to walk on the water?  Did he suddenly have more knowledge about how to control natural laws?  Did he understand how to walk on the water?  

ペテロは水上の歩き方を知っていましたか？彼は自然の法則をコントロールする方法を即座に学んだのでしょうか？水上を歩く方法を理解していましたか？

No.  All he knew was that the Lord had commanded him.  He knew that if he followed the commandments, even things that seemed impossible to him could be accomplished.  

いいえ。彼が知っていたことはただ主が彼に命じられたと言うことだけです。彼は戒めに従えば、たとえそれが不可能に見えることでも成し遂げられると知っていました。

But as he went forward, there was opposition.  The wind and the waves were violent.  Peter began to worry about the opposition.  This made him start to lose his faith.  He became more concerned about the opposition than he was in keeping the commandments of the Lord.

しかし彼が歩き始めたときそれを邪魔することが起こりました。風と波が荒れていました。ペテロはその邪魔するものに恐れ始めました。そして信仰を無くし始めました。彼は今主の戒めを守っているという事実より邪魔するものに心を捕られていきました。

Once he began to worry about the opposition, he began to sink into the water.  

ひとたびその邪魔するものについて心配し始めると、彼はおぼれかけたのです。

He realized that he could not do this by himself.  He cried out to Jesus, asking to be saved.  Jesus “immediately stretched out his hand, and caught him”.  

彼は自分ひとりでは出来ないことを悟りました。イエスに叫び、助けてくださるよう願いました。イエスは「すぐに手を伸ばして彼をつかまえられました」

So it is in our own lives.  The Lord gives us commandments and assignments.  Some of them may seem impossible.  We don’t understand how we can do them.  But, like Peter, we go forward with faith and things seem to be okay.

私たち自身の生活にも当てはまります。主は私たちに戒めと責任、召しを与えられました。その幾つかは不可能のように思えます。私たちはどのようにそれを実行できるのか理解していません。しかしペテロのように私たちは信仰を持って前進することでうまくいくだろうと考えます。

Then Satan comes along and puts opposition in our path.  The opposition can make us afraid.  It can make us begin to doubt.  It can make us begin to lose our faith.

そしてサタンがやってきて私たちの行く手に邪魔するものを置くのです。その邪魔するものは私たちを不安にし疑いの気持ちを植えつけます。私たちは信仰をなくし始めます。

If this happens, we, like Peter, begin to sink.    

そうなると私たちはペテロのようにおぼれかけるのです。

But, again like Peter, if we cry out to the Lord, he will stretch forth his hand and catch us.  He is always there, by our side, waiting to help us.

しかしまたペテロのように主に叫ぶなら、主は手を伸ばし私たちを受けとめて下さいます。主は常に私たちの傍らにおられ私たちを助けるよう待っておられます。

Let’s remember this example as we live our lives each day.  Let’s remember that we do not know how everything works.  We do not know how to “walk on water”, but we do know that we can accomplish anything that the Lord commands us to do.  Let’s not be frightened by the opposition.  It is there just to test our faith.

毎日生活する中でこの模範を忘れないでいましょう。私たちは万物の摂理を完全に理解することなどできません。私たちは「水上の歩き方」も知りません。しかし主が命じられたことは何でも達成可能であることを私たちは知っています。邪魔するものを恐れないようにしましょう。それはただ私たちの信仰を試し強めるためにあるのです。
