「先生、法律の中で、どのいましめがいちばん大切ですか」。イエスは言われた、「『心をつくし、精神をつくし、思いをつくして、主なるあなたの神を愛せよ』。これがいちばん大切な、第一のいましめである。第二もこれと同様である、『自分を愛するようにあなたの隣人を愛せよ』。これらの二つのいましめに、律法全体と預言者とが、かかっている。」マタイ２２：３６－４０

Master, which is the great commandment?  And Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and will all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.  Matthew 22:36-40

どの戒めがいちばん大切ですか？

Which is the great commandment?

これは、パリサイ人が救い主に尋ねた質問でした。もし、本当に知りたいと思って質問したのであれば、それは素晴らしい質問だったはずです。しかし、パリサイ人は、救い主を騙して何か言わせ、主を非難する材料にしようとしただけでした。

This is the question a Pharisee asked the Savior.  Had he asked because he really wanted to know, it would have been a great question.  However, he was just trying to trick the Savior into saying something that the Pharisees could use to condemn him.

救い主は、パリサイ人が何をしようとしているのかを理解し、教訓的な素晴らしい回答をされました。 

The Savior understood what the Pharisee was trying to do, but still gave a wonderful and instructive answer.  

いちばん大切な戒めは、心をつくし、精神をつくし、思いをつくして、神を愛することです。

The greatest commandment of all is to love God with all of our heart and soul and mind.

なぜ、これがいちばん大切な戒めなのでしょうか？

Why is this the greatest commandment?

このひとつの戒めを守れば、天父が私たちに与えてくださった他の戒めもすべて守れるからです。

It is the greatest commandment because if we keep this one commandment, we will keep all of the other commandments that Heavenly Father has given to us.  

私たちが心から天父を愛しているならば、私たちは天父から求められたことを行いたいと思うでしょう。他の人に親切にしたいと思うでしょう。困っている人を助けたいと思うでしょう。救い主の模範に従いたいと思うでしょう。私たちはバプテスマを受けたいと思うでしょう。私たちは、聖約の道を歩み続けたいと思うでしょう。

If we love Heavenly Father with all our heart, we will want to do what he has asked us to do.  We will want to be kind to others.  We will want to help those in need.  We will want to follow the example of our Savior.  We will want to be baptized.  We will want to stay on the covenant path.

救い主は、そこで止めてもよかったはずです。しかし、救い主は私たちの弱さを知っておられ、私たちを愛し、はっきりと理解してほしいと願っておられるので、もうひとつの教えを加えられたのです。第二の戒めは、隣人を自分のように愛することだと教えられました。

It should have been enough for the Savior to stop right there.  However, since he knows how weak we are, and because he loves us and wants us to understand clearly, he added one more instruction.  He told us that the second great commandment is to love our neighbor as ourself.

これは、最初の戒めから明らかだったはずです。しかし、救い主は私たちに、はっきり理解させようとされました。私たちが天父の子供たちに親切でなければ、神を愛することはできないということです。人種差別や国籍、貧富の差、そのほか何であっても、自分が隣人より優れていると思うようでは、神を愛することはできません。もし、自分たちに似た天父の子供だけを愛するなら、私たちは神様を愛することはできません。ネルソン大管長は近年、この原則を非常に明確に教えています。

This should have been obvious from the first commandment.  However, the Savior wanted us to understand very clearly that we cannot love God if we are not kind to his other children.  We cannot love God if we allow racism, national origin, lack of wealth, or anything else to make us think we are better than our neighbors.  We cannot love God if we only love those of his children who are just like us.  President Nelson has taught this principle very clearly in recent years.  

私たちは、困っている人に仕えることで、心から神様を愛していることを示します。私たちは、すべての人に友となることで、心から神様を愛していることを示します。私たちは、出会う人すべてが天父の愛する娘や息子であるのを覚えることによって、心から神様を愛していることを示します。私たちは行動によって、心から神様を愛していることを示すのです。

We show that we love God with all our heart by serving those in need.  We show that we love God with all our heart by being a friend to everyone.  We show that we love God with all our heart by remembering that every person we meet is a beloved daughter or son of Heavenly Father.  It is by our actions that we show that we love God with all our heart.

新しい週が始まります。最初のいちばん大切な戒めを守るよう最善を尽くしましょう。心をつくし、精神をつくし、思いをつくして、神を愛しましょう。また、すべての人を愛するという第二の戒めも忘れないようにしましょう。隣人への奉仕をより良くしましょう。もっと親切にし、もっと役に立ちましょう。神様に求められることを行うことで、私たちが心をつくし、精神をつくし、思いをつくして神様を愛していることを示しましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s do our best to keep the first great commandment.  Let’s love God with all our heart, soul, and mind.  Let’s also remember that the second great commandment is to love everyone, for everyone is a child of God.  Let’s do better at serving our neighbor.  Let’s be kinder and more helpful.  Let’s show God that we do love him with all of our heart, soul, and mind by doing the things that he has asked us to do.
