そこで、彼らは悔い改めた。そして、悔い改めた程度に応じて栄え始めた。
ヒラマン書４：１５
And it came to pass that they did repent, and inasmuch as they did repent, they did begin to prosper.
Helaman 4:15
In the days of Helaman, the Nephites had become very wicked. The Lamanites attacked them and took over many of their cities. Because of all their sufferings, and because of the preaching of Helaman’s son, Nephi, the people began to repent. And, as this scripture tells us, as they began to repent, things got better for them.
ヒラマンの時代、ニーファイ人はとても邪悪になってしまいました。レーマン人は彼らを攻撃し多くの町を占領しました。彼らが受けた苦難やヒラマンの息子、ニーファイの教えにより人々は悔い改め始めました。そしてこの聖句が述べているように、悔い改めることで彼らの状況は良くなったのです。
There is a very important message in this for us too.
私たちにとっても大切なメッセージがここに含まれています。
It is a sad fact of life that we often forget the Lord when things are going well for us. When the Lord gives us great blessings and helps us to be happy, we begin to think that we don’t need to keep the commandments. We begin to think that we are doing it all ourselves.
私たちは事がうまくいっている時、主をよく忘れてしまうのは悲しい現実です。私たちが幸せになるため主が素晴らしい祝福と助けを与えてくださっている時、戒めを守る必要がないように考え始めます。自分ですべてうまくやっていけると考え始めます。
When we start to forget about the Lord and fail to keep the commandments, troubles come into our lives. We wonder why the Lord is punishing us. We are sometimes angry that the Lord is making things hard for us. We feel that the Lord has forgotten about us.
私たちは主を忘れ始め、戒めを守ることを怠るようになると生活の中に問題が起き始めます。主はどうして自分に罰を与えられるのかと考えたり、主が自分に厳しくされることに時折り腹を立てます。私たちは主が私たちを忘れられたと感じます。
Actually, it is just the opposite. The Lord is always there, ready to give us the blessings that we need.
実はそれは全く逆なのです。主はいつもそばにいて私たちが必要な祝福を与える準備をしておられます。
We forget that we are the ones who have changed. We have failed to keep the commandments. We have failed to do those small things like saying our prayers, reading the scriptures, and attending our Church meetings. We have lost blessing by our own actions.
変わったのは自分であることを私たちは忘れるのです。私たちは戒めを守るのを怠ったのです。例えばお祈りし、聖典を読み、教会の集会に出席したりといった小さな事柄を怠ったのです。私たちは自分自身の行動により祝福を失ってしまったのです。
When troubles come into our lives, we begin to suffer. When we begin to suffer, we finally begin to remember the Lord. We begin to keep the commandments again. We begin to do those things that the Lord has asked us to do.
自分の人生に問題が起きると私たちは苦しみ始めます。苦しみ始めるとやっとで主を思い起こします。そして戒めを再び守り始めます。そして主が私たちにするよう教えられたことを行い始めます。
When that happens, we begin to repent. And when we begin to repent, just like the Nephites in the days of Helaman, the Lord is able to start blessing us again. We begin to prosper.
そうなると私たちは悔い改め始めます。そして私たちが悔い改め始めるとヒラマンの時代のニーファイ人のように主は再び私たちを祝福することができるようになるのです。そして私たちは栄えるのです。
It seems strange that we go through this same cycle so many times. We should be smart enough to learn from our experiences. We should be able to remember how many blessings we receive when we keep the commandments.
私たちが幾度もこうした同じことを繰り返すのは奇妙に思えます。私たちは自分の経験から学ぶよう賢くなければなりません。私たちが戒めを守るとどれほどの祝福を受けるのか覚えている必要があります。
But we seem to have a hard time learning that lesson. We keep repeating our mistakes. We become proud, forget the Lord, suffer, repent, and start to receive blessings again.
しかし私たちはその原則をなかなか学べないように思えます。私たちは間違いを繰り返します。高慢になり、主を忘れ、苦しみ、悔い改め、そして再び祝福を受け始めます。
If you feel you are not receiving the blessings that you need, or if you feel that the Lord has forgotten about you, consider the lessons of the Nephites. Be sure you are keeping the commandments. Be sure that you have not forgotten the Lord. Be sure that you are doing the small and simple things that the Lord has asked us to do.
もし自分に必要な祝福を受けていない、主は私のことを忘れていると感じていればニーファイ人の教訓を思い出してください。自分は戒めを守っているか今一度確認してください。主が言われた小さな簡単なことを行っているか見直してください。
As we repent, we too will “begin to prosper”. That doesn’t mean that all our problems will go away or that all our trials will be over. But the Lord will send down his blessings on us to help us get through our challenges. The Lord will bless us with greater understanding. We will begin to prosper in spiritual things.
私たちは悔い改めるなら確かに「栄え」ます。でも私たちのすべての問題が取り除かれるとか、試練が無くなるという意味ではありません。しかし私たちが試練を耐え抜くための助けとなる祝福を主は送ってくださるのです。主は私たちの更なる理解力を祝福してくださいます。私たちは霊的な事柄において栄え始めるのです。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember what happened to the Nephites. Let’s not blame our problems on the Lord. Let’s examine our own lives and make sure we are repenting of those things in our lives that keep us from receiving the blessings that we need.
ニーファイの民に起こったことを忘れないようこの新しい週を過ごしましょう。問題を主のせいにしないように。自分自身の生活を見直し、必要な祝福を受ける妨げになるような事柄は確かに悔い改めるようにしましょう。
I know that if we do this, the Lord will bless and guide us. I know that we will “begin to prosper”.
そうするなら主は私たちを祝福し導いてくださり、私たちは「栄え始める」ことを知っています。
