Wherefore, I the Lord ask you this question — unto what were ye ordained? To preach my gospel by the Spirit, even the Comforter which was sent forth to teach the truth.
Doctrine & Covenants 50:13-14
As the Church began to grow, some members experienced manifestations of various spirits. They did not understand what to do, so the Prophet Joseph Smith inquired of the Lord. The Lord’s answer and instructions are given in this Section of the Doctrine & Covenants.

In verse 13, the Lord asks all of us an important question. The question is, “unto what were ye ordained?”.
13節で、主は大切な質問をしておられます。「何のためにあなたがたは聖任されたのか」ということです。
In this sense, the word “ordained” does not necessarily mean ordained to an office in the priesthood. In a broader sense, it means “what is our own individual responsibility to the Lord as members of his Church?”.
「聖任された」という言葉は、必ずしも神権の職に聖任されたことを意味するわけではありません。広い意味で、「主の教会の会員として、主に対する私たち自身の個人的な責任は何か」という意味を持っています。
What did we promise to do when we were baptized? What do we promise to do each week as we partake of the sacrament? What do we promise to do as we make sacred covenants with the Lord?
バプテスマを受けたとき、私たちは何をすると約束しましたか？ 聖餐をとるとき、私たちは毎週何をすると約束しますか？主と聖約を交わすとき、私たちは何をすると約束しますか。
While there are many things that we promise to do, the one responsibility that the Lord cites in verse 14 is our duty to share the gospel with others.
私たちが約束することはたくさんありますが、主が14節で引用されている唯一の責任は、福音を他の人と分かち合うという義務です。
This can be a scary thing for many of us. It seems strange that we should be hesitant to share with others the gospel. The gospel makes our lives very happy. Why should we be afraid to share the source of our happiness with others?
これは私たちにとって怖いことかもしれません。福音を他の人と分かち合うことを躊躇するのは奇妙に思えます。福音は私たちの生活をとても幸せにします。なぜ私たちは自分の幸せの源を他の人と共有することを恐れなければならないのでしょう？
The Lord gives us comfort and instruction in this verse. We are reminded that it is not us that teaches. It is the Spirit of the Lord that teaches.
主はこの節で慰めと指示を与えておられます。教えるのは私たちではなく、主の御霊なのです。
Even if we do not feel qualified to teach others, or if we are worried that we will not be able to answer questions, or if we think we won’t know what to say, the Lord tells us not to worry.
他の人に教える資格がないと感じたり、質問に答えられないのではないかと心配したり、何を言えばいいのかわからないと思っても、主は心配しないようにと述べておられます。
If we “preach the gospel by the Spirit”, the Spirit will tell us what to say. It is the Spirit that brings peace. It is the Spirit that brings comfort. It is the Spirit that softens hearts.
私たちが「御霊によって福音を宣べ伝える」なら、御霊は何を言うべきかを教えてくれます。平和をもたらすのは御霊です。慰めをもたらすのは御霊です。心を和らげるのは御霊です。
The Lord says the Comforter was “sent forth to teach the truth”. Even if we do not know all the answers, the Spirit does know. Even if we do not know what to say, the Spirit does know. Even if we do not know who to share the gospel with, the Spirit does know.
主は、慰め主を「真理を教えるために送った」と言われています。私たちがすべての答えを知らなくても、御霊は知っています。私たちが何を言うべきかわからなくても、御霊は知っています。誰と福音を分かち合うかわからなくても、御霊は知っています。
We have no need to fear. Our duty is to keep the commandments and to live our lives so that the Spirit can help us. If we listen to the Spirit, we will know what to do and what to say.
恐れる必要はありません。私たちの義務は、御霊が私たちを助けることができるように、戒めを守って生活することです。御霊に耳を傾ければ、何をすべきか、何を言うべきかがわかります。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember that it is not our own talents that help convert people, it is the Spirit of the Lord. Let’s remember that we have a duty to share the blessings and joys of the gospel with those who are searching for the truth. Let’s remember that the Spirit will guide us and direct us as we do our best to share the gospel.
