But behold, I say unto you, that little children are redeemed from the foundation of the world through mine Only Begotten; Wherefore they cannot sin, for power is not given unto Satan to tempt little children, until they begin to become accountable before me;  Doctrine & Covenants 29:46-47

In Section 29 of the Doctrine & Covenants, the Lord reveals more important doctrinal truths to the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Included in this revelation are instructions and doctrine about baptism of children.  While today we understand this principle very well, the early members of the Church did not know about it.  

この啓示には、子供のバプテスマについての指示と教義が含まれています。今日、私たちはこの原則をよく理解していますが、教会の初期の会員はそうではありませんでした。

Christianity has always taught that a person must be baptized in order to enter into Heaven.  That principle is taught very clearly in the New Testament.  Even our Savior, Jesus Christ, the only perfect person who has ever lived on this earth, received the ordinance of baptism.  

キリスト教は常に、人が天国に入るためにはバプテスマを受けなければならないと教えてきました。その原則は新約聖書でとても明確に教えられています。この地上に住んだことのある唯一完全な私たちの救い主、イエス・キリストでさえも、バプテスマの儀式をお受けになりました。

In the Book of Mormon, Nephi explains that, even though the Savior was sinless, he set the example for us by being baptized.  Nephi says that, if even the Savior needed to be baptized, how much more need have we, as sinful people, to be baptized.

ニーファイはモルモン書の中で、救い主は罪がないにもかかわらず、バプテスマを受けてわたしたちに模範を示されたと説明しています。ニーファイは、救い主でさえバプテスマを受ける必要があるとすれば、罪深い私たちはなおさらバプテスマを受ける必要があると述べています。

One of the doctrines of the gospel that was lost during the great apostasy was the fact that little children do not need to be baptized until they reach the age of accountability.  Because this doctrine was lost, many Christian churches began to teach that even little children needed to be baptized to enter into Heaven.  

大背教の間に失われた福音の教義の一つは、幼い子供が責任を負う年齢に達するまでバプテスマを受ける必要がないという事実でした。この教義が失われたため、多くのキリスト教会は、幼い子供でさえも天国に入るためにバプテスマを受ける必要があると教え始めました。

The leaders of the various Christian churches knew the great importance of baptism, but did not understand that only applied to those who have reached the age of accountability.  In their concern that no one be lost, they decided that even little children needed to be baptized.

さまざまなキリスト教会の指導者たちは、バプテスマの重要性を知っていましたが、それが責任を負う年齢に達した人にのみ適用されることを理解していませんでした。誰ひとり失われないことを懸念して、彼らは幼い子供でさえもバプテスマを受ける必要があると定めました。

This incorrect idea was a result of the loss of the priesthood and of revelation after the death of the original apostles.  With no prophets or apostles to guide them, the leaders of the Church in those early days made up their own rules and doctrines.

この誤った考えは、使徒たちが亡くなった後、神権と啓示が取り去られた結果でした。彼らを導く預言者や使徒がいないため、当時の教会の指導者たちは彼ら自身の規則と教義を作り上げました。

As Mormon teaches us in the Book of Mormon, this idea that even little children needed to be baptized in order to be saved is not true.  Mormon taught us that little children cannot sin or repent, so they have no need of baptism.  Little children are saved by the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  No child will be lost because they were not baptized as an infant.

モルモン書でモルモンが教えているように、救われるためには幼い子供でもバプテスマを受ける必要があるという、こうした考えは正しくありません。モルモンは、幼い子供は罪を犯したり悔い改めたりすることができないので、バプテスマを受ける必要がないと教えています。幼い子供はイエス・キリストの贖罪によってすでに救われています。幼い子供がバプテスマを受けていなかったという理由で失われることはありません。

It is interesting that this true doctrine regarding the baptism of little children was one of the very first to be restored in this dispensation.  Once there was a living prophet on the earth, the Lord was able to start revealing true doctrine.  We no longer needed to depend on personal opinions or on old traditions.  We now have clear and easy to understand doctrine directly from the Lord himself.

幼い子供のバプテスマに関するこの真の教義が、この神権時代に最初に回復されたもののひとつであったことは興味深いことです。地上に生ける預言者がいることで、主は真の教義を明らかにできるのです。個人的な意見や古い伝統に頼る必要はありません。私たちは今、主ご自身から直接与えられる、明確で理解しやすい教義を持っています。

What a great blessing it is to have living prophets and apostles.  What a great blessing it is to have clear and easy to understand doctrine.  What a great blessing it is to have truth restored to the earth.

生ける預言者と使徒がいることは、なんとすばらしい祝福でしょう。明確で理解しやすい教義があること、またこの地上に回復された真理があることは、なんと素晴しい祝福でしょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s take time to reflect on the great blessing we have of having living prophets and apostles to guide and teach us.  Let’s think about the wonderful doctrines that have been restored by modern day prophets.  Let’s rejoice in the restoration of truth as the great latter-day Restoration moves along.
