人は罪を犯さなければ、どうして悔い改めることができようか。法律がまったくなければ、どのようにして人は罪を犯すことができようか。罰がなければ、どうして法律があり得ようか。
アルマ ４２：１７
Now, how could a man repent except he should sin? How could he sin if there was no law? How could there be a law save there was a punishment? Alma 42:17
This is an interesting scripture. It is from Alma’s counsel to his son Corianton. Corianton had been with his father, Alma, and with his brothers when they went to teach the Zoramites. Apparently, Corianton had not been a good missionary.
この興味深い聖句はアルマが息子コリアントンに与えた勧告です。コリアントンはゾーラム人を教えに行った時、父親であるアルマや兄弟たちと一緒にいました。でもコリアントンは良い宣教師ではなかったようです。
Corianton had many concerns and doubts about various basic gospel topics.
コリアントンは基本的な福音の課題について多くの疑問を持っていました。
In this particular scripture, Alma is teaching Corianton about the great Plan of Salvation. He explains to Coriaton that this life is a probationary time, a time granted to us to learn and to repent.
特にこの聖句ではアルマはコリアントンに大いなる救いの計画について教えています。彼はこの世が準備の期間であり私たちが学び悔い改めるよう与えられているとコリアントンに説明しています。
He also tells Corianton that all men will die someday. When death comes, there is no more time to repent. Our time on earth will have come to an end.
彼はまた誰でもいつの日か死ぬことをコリアントンに教えています。死が来ると悔い改める時間も無くなります。私たちのこの世での時間が終わるのです。
Like Lehi, Alma teaches that there must be an opposition in all things. For the great plan of mercy to be fair, there must be an opportunity to choose good or bad.
リーハイ同様、アルマは全ての事には反対のものがあると教えています。偉大な憐れみの計画が公平であるには善悪を選ぶ機会が必要です。
To obtain mercy, men need to repent.
憐れみを受けるには人は悔い改めねばなりません。
Alma then asks the question, “how could a man repent except he should sin?”
アルマはそこで「人は罪を犯さなければ、どうして悔い改めることができようか」と質問しています。
If there was no opportunity to choose good or bad, there would be no need to repent. The only way to repent is first to have committed sin, to have chosen the bad rather than the good.
善悪を選ぶ機会が無ければ悔い改める必要がありません。悔い改めるにはまず善ではなく悪を選ぶことで犯した罪が存在しなければなりません。
For agency to exist, there must be laws given that set forth the “right” and the “wrong”. If there is no law, there cannot be any agency.
選択の自由が存在するには、「善と悪」を定めた律法が必要です。もし律法が無ければ自由に選ぶ自由意思は存在しません。
Finally, Alma explains that when a law is given, there must be a punishment set forth. If there is no punishment, the law is not a “law”. It is only a “suggestion”.
最後にアルマは律法が与えられた時、罰も定められる必要があり、もし罰が無ければ律法は「律法」ではなくなると説明しています。それは単に「提案」でしかないのです。
Just as with Corianton, there are many people today who do not believe that there are any laws. They believe that anything they choose to do is alright. They believe that they are the only ones who can decide what is “right” and “wrong”.
コリアントンのように今日律法など無いと信じている人が多くいます。彼らは何をしても大丈夫だと信じています。「善」と「悪」を決定するのは個人であると信じています。
This has always been one of Satan’s most effective lies. He tries to trick people into believing that there is no law. And, if there is no law, there cannot be a punishment. If there is no punishment, there cannot be any “right” or “wrong”.
これはサタンが使ってきた最も効果的な嘘です。彼は律法などないと人々に信じ込ませようとしてきました。そして律法が無ければ罰も無いと。もし罰が無ければ「善」や「悪」などあるはずがないと。
But, there most assuredly is “right” and “wrong”. There are laws. There are punishments.
しかし確かに「善」と「悪」は存在します。律法は存在しますし罰も存在します。
We have all sinned. We have all made mistakes. We have all made bad choices.
私たちは誰もが罪を犯し、誰もが間違いを犯し、誰もが間違った選択をしたことがあります。
Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we all have the opportunity to repent. Through the Atonement, we can be forgiven of our sins. Through the Atonement, we can receive the mercy that is promised to those who repent.
イエス・キリストの贖罪を通して私たちには悔い改める機会があります。贖罪を通して私たちは罪から赦されます。贖罪を通して私たちは悔い改める者に約束された憐れみを受けれるのです。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember Alma’s counsel to Corianton. Let’s remember that there are laws given. Let’s remember that we have the opportunity to choose right or wrong. Let’s remember that we can repent and receive mercy, through the Atonement of our Savior.
アルマがコリアントンに与えた勧告を忘れないように今週を過ごしましょう。律法が与えられていること、善と悪を選ぶ機会が与えられていることを忘れないようにしましょう。私たちは悔い改め、救い主の贖いを通して憐れみを受けれることを覚えていましょう。
