さて、レーマン人を再び正して真理の知識のもとに連れ戻すために、多くの手段が講じられたが、いずれも無駄に終わった。彼らは戦争と流血を喜びとし、また、彼らの同胞であるわたしたちに対して、永遠の憎しみを抱いていたからである。そして彼らは、武力で絶えずわたしたちを滅ぼそうとした。ヤコブ書７：２４

And it came to pass that many means were devised to reclaim and restore the Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth; but it was all in vain, for they delighted in wars and bloodshed, and they had an eternal hatred against us, their brethren.  And they sought by the power of their arms to destroy us continually.  Jacob 7:24

This may seem like an unusual scripture to use for a Sunday Scripture thought.  However, there is an important message for us contained in this short scripture.

これはSunday Scripture としては異例な聖句に思えるかもしれません。けれどもこの短い聖句には私たちにとって大切なメッセージが含まれています。

Jacob describes the Lamanites at that time as being very wicked people.  The Lamanites wanted to destroy all the Nephites.  And yet, Jacob tells us that “many means were devised” to teach the gospel to the Lamanites.  

その当時のレーマン人はとても邪悪な民だとヤコブは述べています。レーマン人はニーファイ人を全滅させたいと思っていました。けれどもヤコブはレーマン人に福音を教えるため「あらゆる手段が講じられた」と述べています。

There is a great lesson in this for us.

この中には私たちにとって大切な教えがあります。

There are many people in the world today who do not like the Church.  There are many people who criticize the Church, its leaders, and its members.  There are many people that would like to destroy the Church. 

今日世の中には教会を嫌いな人が多くいます。教会や指導者、会員を非難する人が多くいます。教会を破壊したいと考える人も多くいます。

You may know some people like this.  You may have someone like this that you work with, or that lives next door to you.  You may even have someone like this in your own family.

その様な人を知っている方もいるかも知れません。そのような人が職場やご近所の人の中にいるかもしれません。また、もしかすると自分の家族の中にそのような人がいるかもしれません。

How to we deal with people who do not like the Church?  Jacob teaches us what we should do.  

教会に好意を持っていない人とどのように付き合ったらよいでしょう。ヤコブは私たちのすべきことを教えています。

The Lamanites were not just saying bad things about the Church.  They were not just persecuting the Church.  They were not just mean to the members.  They were actually trying to kill all the Church members.  

レーマン人は教会について悪い事を言うだけではありませんでした。彼らは教会を迫害するだけではありませんでした。彼らは教会員に辛く当たるだけではありませんでした。彼らは教会の会員を全員「殺そう」としたのです。

But even though the Lamanites were trying to kill all the Nephites, the Nephites still tried many different ways to bring the Lamanites back into the gospel.  They did not give up after the first failure.  They did not give up after the second failure.  They did not give up after many failures.

しかしレーマン人がニーファイ人全員を殺そうとしたにもかかわらず、ニーファイ人はレーマン人が福音のもとに戻るよう色々な方法を試みました。彼らは最初に失敗したとき諦めませんでした。彼らは二度目に失敗したとき諦めませんでした。彼らは幾度も失敗した後でも諦めませんでした。

We have a responsibility to teach those around us about the gospel.  Not just those who like us, or who are friendly with us, but even those who do not like us.  Our duty is to “devise many means” to help others learn about the gospel.

私たちは自分の周りにいる人々に福音を教える責任があります。私たちに好意を持っている人や友好的な人だけでなく、私たちに好意を持っていない人に対してもです。私たちの義務は他の人が福音について学べるよう「あらゆる手段を講じる」ことです。

If they reject our message, we must keep on trying.  We must look for different ways to teach them.  We must not give up.  We must be like the Nephites.  

もし彼らが私たちのメッセージを拒絶しても、諦めずに続けて努力しなければなりません。私たちは教えるために別の方法を探さねばなりません。私たちは諦めてはいけません。私たちはニーファイのようでなければなりません。

Let’s all try hard this week to look for new ways to present the message of the gospel to those around us.  Let’s try hard to follow the example of the Nephites.  Let’s remember our duty. 

今週、周りにいる人に福音のメッセージを紹介する方法を頑張って探してみましょう。ニーファイの模範に従うよう頑張りましょう。自分の務めを忘れないようにしましょう。
