かれらは主なる神の声に聞き従うのが遅かった。それゆえ、主なる彼らの神は、彼らの祈りを聴くのを遅くする、すなわち彼らの苦難の日に彼らにこたえるのを遅くするのである。平穏な日には、彼らはわたしの勧告を軽んじた。しかし、苦難の日にはやむを得ずわたしを捜し求める。
教義と聖約１０１：７－８
They were slow to harken to the voice of the Lord their God; therefore, the Lord their God is slow to harken unto their prayers, to answer them in the day of their trouble. In the day of their peace they esteemed lightly my counsel; but, in the day of their trouble, of necessity they feel after me.
Doctrine & Covenants 101:7-8
This scripture was given to the Prophet Joseph Smith regarding the suffering of the Church members who were in Jackson County, Missouri. They had suffered great persecutions. Many had been killed and many others driven from their homes. Their crops had been burned and their livestock killed.
この聖句はミズーリ州ジャクソン郡の教会員が当時受けていた苦境に関して預言者ジョセフ・スミスが受けたものです。彼らは悲痛な迫害を受けていました。その多くは殺害されたり家から追い出されました。彼らの穀物は焼き払われ家畜も殺されました。
We can learn an important lesson from the message in this scripture.
私たちはこの聖句のメッセージから大切な教えを学ぶことができます。
The Lord said that the reason the members in Jackson County were suffering was because they had not been obedient to the commandments that had been given to them.
主はジャクソン郡の会員が苦しむのは彼らが受けていた戒めに従順でなかったからだと言われました。
During their times of peace, they had “esteemed lightly” the counsel of the Lord. “Esteem” is an old word that means “to value” or “to respect”. If we do not keep the commandments of the Lord, we do not respect the word of the Lord.
平穏な日には、彼らは主の勧告を「軽んじた」のです。「英語のEsteem」は古い言葉で「尊重する」とか「尊敬する」という意味があります。もし主の戒めを守らなければそれは主の言葉を尊重していないことなのです。
They had also been “slow to harken to the voice of the Lord”.
彼らはまた「神の声に聞き従うのが遅かった」のです。
Because of they had not been diligent in keeping the commandments of the Lord, the Lord was not able to give them the blessings they needed.
彼らは主の戒めに熱心に従わなかったので、主は彼らが必要とする祝福を与えることができませんでした。
Are we sometimes like these early Church members? In our own times of peace, do we “esteem lightly” the counsel of the Lord?
私たちも時々そのような初期の教会員のようではありませんか？ もしかしたら平和ボケから主の勧告を「軽んじて」いませんか？
Do we treat the Lord like the local fire department? Do we only call on him when there is a great emergency in our lives? Do we expect the Lord to “put out the fire” in our life without any effort on our part?
主を地元の消防署のように扱っていませんか？人生の窮地に立った時だけ連絡をとっていませんか？自分のすべき事もせずただ主に「火を消してもらえる」と期待していませんか？
In this scripture the Lord reminds us of the consequences of not keeping the commandments. If we are “slow to harken to the voice of the Lord”, the Lord will be “slow to harken” to our prayers.
この聖句で主は私たちに戒めを守らない時の結果について警告しています。「神の声に聞き従うのが遅」ければ主は私たちの祈りを「聴くのを遅く」されます。
If, in our own lives, we hope to receive blessings during our “days of trouble”, we need to keep the commandments even during our “days of peace”. In fact, it may be even more important to keep the commandments during times of peace, because that shows the Lord that we truly love him and want to keep his commandments.
もし自分の「苦難の日」に祝福を受けたいと望めば「平穏な日」でも主の戒めを守る必要があります。実際、平穏な時に戒めを守ることはより大切なことかもしれません。なぜならそうする事で私たちは主を真から愛し、主の戒めを守りたい決意を示すからです。
Just like the people in Jackson County, we need to learn that it is very important to remember the Lord at all times, not just when we have trials.
ジャクソン郡の人々のように私たちも試練の時だけでなく常に主を覚えていることの大切さを学ぶ必要があります。
Let’s make a greater effort this week to “esteem” the counsel of the Lord. Let’s make a greater effort to keep his commandments each day. Let’s make a greater effort to express our gratitude to the Lord for the many blessing that he sends to us each day.
今週、主の勧告を「重んじる」ようよりいっそうの努力を払いましょう。毎日主の戒めを守る一層の努力を致しましょう。主が毎日私たちに送ってくださる祝福に感謝の気持ちをもっと表しましょう。
As we do these things, we will be able to receive the blessings that we need, whether in times of peace or in times of trouble. I know that these things are true.
そうすることで平穏な時、苦難の時にかかわらず私たちが必要とする祝福を受けるでしょう。それらが真実であることを知っています。
