おお、わたしの愛する同胞よ、悔い改めなさい。そして、狭い門から入り、永遠の命を得るまで細い道を歩み続けなさい。ヤコブ書６：１１
O then, my beloved brethren, repent ye, and enter in at the strait gate, and continue in the way which is narrow, until ye shall obtain eternal life. Jacob 6:11
In this scripture, Jacob teaches us in a simple way what we must do in this life. His teaching is very easy to understand.
この聖句ではヤコブは私たちがこの世でなすべきことを簡単な方法で教えています。彼の教えはとてもわかりやすいものです。
What does he teach us? He teaches us three simple things that we must do.
何を教えているのでしょう？彼は私たちになすべき簡単な事が三つあると教えています。
First, we must repent.
まず最初に、私たちは悔い改めねばなりません。
This is the beginning of our path back to our Heavenly Father. When we were first taught the gospel, we repented of our sins so we could be baptized.
これは私たちが天父のもとへ戻る道の出発点なのです。私たちは最初に福音を学んだとき、バプテスマが受けれるよう罪を悔い改めました。
By repenting, we show that we love Heavenly Father and our Savior, Jesus Christ. We show that we want to keep their commandments. We show that we will be humble followers of Jesus Christ.
悔い改めることで私たちは天父と救い主イエスキリストへの愛を示すのです。私たちは天父と救い主の戒めを守りたいこと、そしてイエスキリストの謙虚な従者になるという意志を示すのです。
Second, Jacob teaches us that we must “enter in at the strait gate”. This means that we must be baptized. Once we have repented of our sins, we can be baptized for the remission of those sins. Baptism is the “gate” that opens the road that leads us back to our Heavenly Father.
二つ目に、ヤコブは私たちは「狭い門から入ら」ねばならないと教えています。これはバプテスマを受けねばならないと言う意味です。私たちは自分の罪を悔い改めれば、罪の許しを受けるバプテスマを受けることが出来ます。バプテスマは天父のもとに続く道を開く「門」なのです。
Third, we are taught that we must “continue in the way which is narrow”.
三つ目に、私たちは「細い道を歩み続けなさい」と教えられています。
Nephi taught us this same principle. In his vision, he saw the straight and narrow path and a rod of iron by the path. He taught us that we must hold to the iron rod. He said that if we hold on to the iron rod, it will keep us safely on the “straight and narrow path”.
ニーファイもこの同じ原則を教えています。かれは啓示の中でまっすぐで細い道とそれに沿った鉄の棒を見ました。彼はもしその鉄の棒に捕まっていれば私たちを「まっすぐで細い道」に安全に留めさせてくれると言っています。
How long do we need to stay on the straight and narrow path? We must stay on the path until we “shall obtain eternal life”. This means that we must stay on the path until the end of our mortal journey here on earth.
どれほど長くそのまっすぐで細い道に留まっていなければならないのでしょう？私たちは「永遠の命を得るまで」その道に留まるべきなのです。これはこの地上で死すべき生涯をまっとうするまでその道に留まるべきだという意味です。
Our goal in this life is to live so that we are worthy to return and live with our Heavenly Father. If we follow this simple teaching of Jacob, we can do that.
この人生の目的は天父の元に戻りともに住めるようふさわしく生きることです。私たちはヤコブのこの簡単な教えに従うならそれが出来るのです。
But what if we make mistakes?
けれど私たちがもし間違いを犯したらどうでしょう？
We all make mistakes. But it would be very difficult to keep baptizing people over and over again, each time they committed a sin. So the Lord gave us the sacrament.
私たちはみな間違いを犯します。しかし人々が罪を犯すたびに繰り返しバプテスマを施すのはとても難しいことです。ですから主は聖餐を用意されたのです。
After we have been baptized, we still repent of our sins in preparation for taking the sacrament each week. If we repent, we can receive the same forgiveness for our sins by taking the sacrament. We do not need to be baptized again each week.
私たちはバプテスマを受けた後も、毎週聖餐を受ける準備として罪を悔い改めます。私たちは悔い改めれば同じ罪の許しを聖餐をとることによって受けれるのです。ですから毎週バプテスマを受けなおす必要はないのです。
So, each day, each hour, each minute, our responsibility is to hold on to the iron rod. This means that we must keep the commandments. If we do this, we will always stay on the straight and narrow path that leads us back to our Heavenly Father.
毎日、毎時間、毎分、いつの時も私たちの責任は鉄の棒にしっかりつかまっているいることです。これは戒めを守るべきだということです。もしそうするならば、私たちは天父のもとに戻るまっすぐで狭い道にいつも留まっていることでしょう。
And, if we stay on the straight and narrow path, Jacob teaches us that we will receive eternal life. That is the greatest blessing that Heavenly Father can give us.
そしてそのまっすぐで細い道に留まっているならば、私たちは永遠の生命を受けるとヤコブは教えています。それは天父が私たちに与えられる最高の祝福なのです。
I know that these three steps that Jacob teaches us are very important. I know that if we will follow this teaching, we will receive the reward of eternal life. I know that we will be blessed and guided as we hold on to the iron rod even when Satan sends darkness and fiery darts to try to trick us. I know that we can be faithful.
私はヤコブが教えたこれらの三つのステップがとても大切だと知っています。この教えに従うなら、私たちは永遠の生命という報いを受けると知っています。たとえサタンが闇と火の矢をもって私たちを騙そうとしてもこの鉄の棒にしっかりと捕まっていれば私たちは祝福され導かれることを知っています。私たちは信仰深く忠実であれると知っています。
Let’s try hard this week to follow these three simple teachings and stay on the narrow path.
