For what is a man advantaged if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
Luke 9:25
この聖句は、マタイによる福音書16章26節にある、よく知られた聖句をルカが訳したものです。マタイとルカはこの教えの重要性を理解しており、彼らはそれを著作に含めました。
This scripture is Luke’s version of the more familiar verse in Matthew 16:26. Both Matthew and Luke understood the importance of this teaching and both included it in their writings.
これは私たち一人一人がよく考えるべき問いかけです。
This is a question that we should each ponder.
裕福になること、有名になること、権力者になること、それらがこの世限りのものだとしたら、どのようなメリットがありますか？それらは良いことかもしれませんし、悪いことかもしれません。
What benefit is there in becoming wealthy, in becoming famous, in becoming powerful, if those things only last during the day of this life? All those things can be good things, or they can be bad things.
裕福であることは悪いことではありません。 有名であることは悪いことではありません。 権力があることは何の問題もありません。裕福であったり、有名であったり、権力を持ったりしている正しい男女はたくさんいます。
There is nothing wrong with being wealthy. There is nothing wrong with being famous. There is nothing wrong with being powerful. There are many righteous men and women who are wealthy, or who are famous, or who are powerful.
裕福であることは問題ではありません。 ただ問題なのは、永遠の祝福よりも自分の富を優先するようにサタンが私たちを誘惑することです。
Being wealthy is not the problem. Rather, the problem is that Satan tempts us to place a higher priority on our wealth than on the blessings of eternity.
有名であることは問題ではありません。ただ問題なのは、サタンが私たちを誘惑して、高慢でうぬぼれさせ、自分は他の人よりも優れていると思わせることです。
Being famous is not the problem. Rather, the problem is that Satan tempts us to become proud and vain, to think that we are better than other people.
権力を持つことは問題ではありません。ただ問題なのは、サタンが私たちの力を不義に使うように誘惑することです。
Being powerful is not the problem. Rather, the problem is that Satan tempts us to use our power in unrighteous ways.
富も名声も権力も、人が死ぬとすべて消えてしまいます。人生における唯一、確実に保証できることは、いつの日か、この地上のすべての人々が人生の終りを迎えるということです。戒めを守る人に約束された祝福よりも富や名声や権力を重んじる人々にとって非常に重要だと思われるものを、私たちはすべて置いていくのです。
All of those things, wealth, fame, and power will come to an end when we die. The one and only absolute guarantee in this life is that someday, every person on this earth will come to the end of their time here. We will leave all those things behind that seemed so important to those who valued the wealth or fame or power more than they valued the blessings promised to those who keep the commandments.
裕福な人、有名な人、権力者は、この人生でつかの間の喜びを感じるかもしれません。しかし、彼らが人生を終える日に、つかの間の幸福ではなく、手に入れることができたかもしれない永遠の喜びがあったことに気付くでしょう。
The wealthy, the famous, the powerful may have joy for a time in this life. But, when the day comes that their life here is over, they will quickly realize that they have traded short-term happiness for the eternal joy they could have received.
「失うことができない物のために、守れない物を与える者は、決して愚かではない。」という古いことわざがあります。私たちは霊界に何も持っていけません。私たちがどれほど裕福であったか、どれほど有名であったか、またはこの人生でどれほど権力があったかは問題ではありません。それらのどれも、永遠の世界では何の役にも立たないでしょう。
There is an old saying, “It is a wise man who gives up that which he cannot keep for that which he can never lose”. We can take nothing with us into the spirit world. It does not matter how wealthy we have been, or how famous we have been, or how powerful we have been in this life. None of those things will be of any benefit to us in the eternal world.
救い主は私たちに「わたしたちの宝を天に蓄える」ように命じられました。私たちはイエス・キリストの真の弟子になることによってそれを行います。私たちはこの地上で他の人々に仕えることによってそれを行います。私たちは、天の御父のもとに戻って一緒に暮らすために必要なすべての救いの儀式を受けます。聖約の道にしっかりととどまることによってそれを行います。
The Savior commanded us to “lay up our treasures in heaven”. We do that by becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ. We do that by serving others here on earth. We do that be receiving all the ordinances of salvation that are necessary for us to return and live with Heavenly Father. We do that by staying firmly on the covenant path.
私たちが天に蓄えた宝は、この世の一時的な富や名声、権力よりもはるかに価値があります。それは私たちと家族の生活を永遠に祝福します。
The treasure that we lay up in heaven is far more valuable than the temporary wealth, fame, or power of this world. It will bless our lives and the lives of our families throughout eternity.
新しい週が始まります。私たちの宝とは何なのか、またどこにあるのか考えてみましょう。私たちは永遠の宝よりも、この地上の宝に関心がありますか？サタンが惑し永遠の祝福を失うままにさせてはいませんか。私たちの優先順位は、地上と天国のどこにあるのでしょうか？この問いについて考えてみましょう。
As we go through this next week, let’s think about where our treasure is. Are we more concerned with the treasures of this earth than we are with the treasures of eternity? Are we allowing Satan to trick us into losing eternal blessings? Where are our priorities, on earth or in heaven? Let’s ponder that question.
